My no.1 daughter gave me a nearly obsolete computer to ease depression following my area of expertise being made
redundant by CR technology. With six GB. hdd and125mb.
DDR RAM and no keyboard skills it was a brave new world.
Having been somewhat deflated by both hardware and
software failures I am presently trying, as Hamlet put it
'to take up arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing
end them'
The first hurdle was a smooth reliable mains supply plus
surge protection at least to protect internet phone + UPS.
Next was a s/h laptop with a failed screen and ethernet
connected to provide redundancy and backup options.
My first internet connection was time shared dialup.
Now I enjoy the luxury of both ps2 keyboard and mouse
during P.O.S.T. and USB.keyboard and trackball mouse
and ADSL2 with unlimited downloads overnight.
The best backup strategy I have found is at???????? where my hdd needs are spelled out.
I am well protected online by Comodo products.
To enhance longevity I presently am toying with leaving
the motherboard powered up continuously unless there
will be no need for several days. The hdd are switched
off at day's end and the monitor is set to standby after
20 mins. At intervals I run sfc /scannow (disk needed).
My wish list is longer than my arm. I would welcome any
and all replies. Regards, Douglas
