Indeed. People are threatened by anything that doesn't fit into their worldview. All their lives they've been taught the following:

Do well in school -> gets into good college
Good college -> good job

It's been pounded into their heads since grade school. Now you have Internet marketers

Good college (maybe) -> Make money at HOME?!?

This just doesn't sit well with a lot of people. This goes against everything they've been led to believe, therefore it can't possibly be true.

They are afraid that you'll succeed. That's scary because it shows them how much they themselves are afraid to take the necessary steps to do what they want with their life. Even they make it to look like it's about you, it's about them.

Whatever you do, don't quit, ever. If you "fail" and go broke, go get a job and then save enough to try again. But no matter what, do not quit or go work for somebody else unless you get a cut of the action.

Now go make some money and then teach them how to do it.

I laugh. The majority of my friends went to a great university and got degrees and are doing their CA now...( I went to University also) but went into online marketing. Its a split between people telling me I should get a real job and a people wanting to learn more about what I do. For the people that tell me to get a real job, I think its for a various reasons a) they think that this isn't permanent b) they think I don't make real money c) probably a part of them is a bit envious that I'v e gone off on my own and don't have a boss and travel while earning money.

Regardless of what they say, I LOVE what I do and think I have the best 'job' (although I woudn't call it that) in the world. I really wouldn't trade it for anything.

As long as you are paying your bills and they arent, why should you care what 'they' say?

You're always going to have haters that are pissted that they are not making what they think they are worth in the 9-5 grind, but you're at home in your underwear making a check.

Regardless of what the constitution says...not all men (or women) are created equal and someone has to work the drive-thru.

Most people are taught that the 8-5 (no such thing as 9-5 anymore) is the only way to make money. So they don't understand it.

Every year this question comes up in one form or another.
So I've said this before.
If it wasn't for people having jobs, you wouldn't be able to do what you do online.

So I tell them the same thing I tell everyone else.
I have a job, it's just different from yours.

I think the big problem people have with those who work online is that we enjoy our jobs more then most who work offline.
By the way I also have an offline job and small offline business.
I do both because they are fun to me and never seem like work.
In my mind I haven't worked a day in the last 10 years.
To others all I do is work:confused:

Let's do a reality check this time on this question. It's being asked a lot lately.

Too often, new marketers get all bright eyed about working online. They can't stop telling friends and family how rich they will be and how superior this work is to others who work dreaded "jobs".

This attitude is not attractive even if you are successful online. It's worse if you are not yet earning a living - and the world doesn't stop because you decided to only work online.

If you are not making money - all your friends and family see is someone sitting in front of a computer, talking about a great life, and earning $0. It's not impressive and you can't blame them for wanting you to do more.

If you are paying your own way in your life, you can do what you please and laugh when someone says "get a job". If others are paying for the roof over your head and the food you eat, you might need to be more receptive to their suggestions.

You can criticize the "world view" of others all you want - but success shows and until you are self sufficient you have no basis for feeling superior.

I'm not sure if the worldview comment was directed at me or not, but I speak from a general standpoint. The college/job thing was just an example.

For instance, in my case I look different. Even though I've always had tons of friends, there were always other people who, for the sheer way I dress, scuttle away. Instead of denim mini-skirts and ugg boots, I wear outfits that were in fashion 150 years ago, mostly dark-colored. This doesn't fit in with a lot of people's worldview.

Am I looking for acceptance from these people? No. As far as I'm concerned if people are that shallow they can stay away.

Let me reiterate... people are threatened by anything that doesn't fit into their worldview. That's just the nature of most of humanity. That statement can be applied to a LOT of different things, not just the way somebody earns their living.

That's why I keep stressing how important people with jobs are.
Look around your house or apartment. Nearly everything in it and including it would not exist without someone having a job.

Right from day one I've always heard that making a living online was somehow better then having a job or even an offline business.

I know one woman who runs a daycare out of her house. She constantly complains about having kids and warns everyone not to have kids, but she takes care of kids 9-5 M-F. I asked her how she likes it... never answered my question. Kids are bright - they can tell when you're not enjoying yourself, or enjoying their company. Even though crying can give you a headache, taking care of a toddler has its rewards. It's just sad that people will do something they hate "just for the paycheck" without any personal merit.

Personally I enjoy what I do offline way more then what I do online.
Don't get me wrong, if I made all my money online and earned more then enough to live on, I wouldn't complain about it.
I'd still do what I do offline though simply because it's fun to me and real good exercise.

Well, at times I can be a bit fiesty, and living in Michigan where jobs are far and few in between, I just tell them that if they think they can find a better job for me... I'd be more than happy to take that job! Heh he!:p

I agree with what everyone is basically saying. When you tell people that you work online, they just kind of give you that same old look like, "yeah right."

Although I still work for someone else, my goal of working full-time is getting closer each day and I am really getting excited because of the positive results that are taking place.

Like others, it is because of my persistence, faith, hard work, and definitely a positive attitude that make my goal a closer reality every day.

One last note, having a mentor is also the reason that I am getting closer to fulfilling my dream. If I did not have a mentor and an entrepreneur team to help guide me, I would be at the back of the line for sure.

Exactly. As much as I plan to delve into this business so much it becomes an art form, I actually find Internet Marketing to be the bridge, not the destination, of my dreams... I've known exactly what I wanted to do for as long as I can remember: write books. I've completed tons of short stories and even several full-length novels before I was 12 - I wouldn't publish any of them but that's a feat for someone who barely hit double digits.

One of my biggest dilemmas in high school was finding the perfect job that would make so much money I could focus on writing without a problem. Then Warrior Forum came along, and well... I think you see where it goes after that.

I don't think that the average person is ready to accept the fact that you can make money at home, on a computer.

Think about some of the unusual jobs that are out there.
Why would anybody want that job?
