As marketers, we need to identify what the marketplace wants and then give it to them. I got that. I understand that.

But, with all the coverage surrounding Tiger Woods, it just reminds me of (frankly) how SHALLOW so many people are today?

I mean, I really don't care about Tiger Woods' antics. The guy's a great golfer. That's fine. But I don't need to hear all those news coverage about his car accident, the scandal, what his wife might do, etc.

Why are we so celebrity-obsessed? Why are we so shallow?

Well... I have a long answer I want to give but I want to ponder it a bit, figure out how to put it into words - or just figure out if I can be bothered haha.

But one thing I wonder is, how many people here claiming to not care would care if it had been Yanik Silver (sp?), Frank Kern, etc.? Whoever they're favorite well-known marketer is. It's easy to not see it that way.

Not that they'd get so much mainstream media coverage, but...

It's not worth a long answer - but a yawn.

Totally non-interesting news but you have to wonder how many eons it will be before men figure out the dish "on the side" can't be trusted to keep her mouth shut but will go for her 15 minutes of fame.

      Happens every time.

Dunno....maybe ya should ask the major pharmaceutical conglomerations? I'm sure they'd have a hint.

Racism tops my list of suspects. I'm sure Fuzzy has been on a 4 day bender.

Golf is a niche pastime/sport. I'm sure many Americans very much resent the money Woods makes playing golf and the celebrity that comes with it.

He also got caught doing something everyone would expect such a young man of enormous means to do. Had he been a linebacker in the NFL, this wouldn't even be news.

I'm pretty neutral to the whole thing and have spent maybe 30 seconds paying attention.

I would hardly call his personal life "antics." He's been very discrete so far and with good reason. No human wielding that kind of monetary power could resist a God complex. He's been contrite and accepted responsibility for his actions without the long drawn out process of nailing him to a cross.

For that alone I respect him.

Everyone makes mistakes. A good man or woman will own them and a weak one will deflect blame and try to take every soul around down with them.

His life is his life.........Do we really have so much time that we can spend it worrying about celebs?
I don't........got enough to do worrying about me.....

Tiger owes much of his billion dollars, $100 million from golf and $900 million from endorsements to celebrity obsession. He wouldn't have made all that money if the public didn't care. If this is an inconvenience, he can take a few $100 a see a therapist. No one makes him play golf on TV or make TV commercials.

"Celebrity" has been with us probably for all of human history...Gladiators were treated and admired just as the celebrities of today.

But with TV, today celebs come into our homes almost on a daily basis. Since we see them so often, we feel we know them. Plus, other people know (of) them, so they make easy conversation topics.

I think the better question is, Why wouldn't we talk about people we both know?

"Had he been a linebacker in the NFL, this wouldn't even be news. "

That statement is rediculous. Everytime almost any relatively famous sport figure from ANY sport is outed its headline news.

Ok, who was the last NFL player who cheated on his wife?

Are you telling me that in the last 7 days not one single NFL player has engaged in some form of infidelity, wrecked a car or been arrested for a domestic disturbance?

      I rest my case.

The kid from FSU, who isn't even a pro, got suspended from the Alabama game (most important college game of the season so far) for DUI. He's also a freshman (probably 19 years old) and has been all over the news, at least ESPN.

I'll bet every NFL player that gets a DUI at least makes the local news. If they are a big star, they will make the national news.

I have a standing offer at work. Anyone that can provide proof they watched an entire show with the sound on and their eyes on the screen gets lunch on me.

No winners in over a year or longer.

I secretly lurve her, but it would only work work if she never talked in my presence and we kept the lights really dim or completely off.

And she could never touch me.

Today on ESPN, it ws reported that RB Adrian Peterson got a speeding ticket for doing 109.

BTW, Nancy Grace isn't news and I see no reason for you to impose your definition on the rest of the world.

lighten up Francis and Peterson isn't a linebacker

109 isn't impressive unless it was a school zone and he was driving a bus full of nuns

Some of it may be due to people like seeing the successful
stumble, fall, etc. Fall from grace, maybe.

For perhaps many, paying way too much attention to celebrities
is a vicarious existence and escape from their lives. I think that
has a lot to do with it for many people. But what the hell do I know
about these things? I'm just guessing.

And no, I would not pay any attention at all if it was a well-known
    IM'er. Who cares.

I would never have known about this incident with Woods if it
was not on the radio, or here. I think I first heard about it here
in this forum. (Haven't watched any TV in about 7 yrs.)
