It just started snowing outside

Hello, avenuegirl:

I'm not a "winter person" -- I much prefer summer sun and hot days!

However, living in northern Alberta, we learn to live with the winter and the snow. And once the temperature drops, then I actually want to see the snow; otherwise, the land looks so dreary and desolate.

We've had a dusting of snow for a month or more, but yesterday we received a fairly good downfall - and some areas of the province received quite a dump of snow! All this just in time for the Christmas season.

Like you, both my spouse and I wish we could blink and make spring arrive, but, alas, here we are left to cuddle up and make the best of it.

Can't agree with you more.

I would gladly trade all my snow days for a tropical weather for money. I was raised up in the tropics, and the sign of snow to me just represents a 'gloomy' atmosphere.

That is exciting (at least the first snow!)

We don't get snow here but it is very cold for the past week (our summer just ended close to Thanksgiving) and we are getting 'Fall' with orange leaves on the ground.

I am sure it is snowing in the mountains somewhere around here for it to be this cold even at sea level where I live.

We did have a freak hail storm and quite a bit of rain for a few days, a little over a week ago but that is the closest we come to snow. We need the rain badly and although we are still not up to 'normal' levels, we have more than last year...

I wish we had more defined seasons here in California, but I know it must be difficult to live in snow. My sister who lives in Colorado said that they have more than double the average snowfall already this year. She is also more than ready for Spring!

Isn't this thread just the perfect 'The Grass is Always Greener'.

I am envious: I'd love to move to California (or Nevada) ... but despite what my wife says about preferring it warm, she says we need to stay here "for the seasons." So, if she don't go, I don't go! Besides, we now have grandkids in the area, so looks like movin' south ain't gonna happen for us now, for sure.

"Back in the '90s," I travelled to the Arizona desert several summers for marketing conventions. I loved the experience and the heat so much, I brought my wife along with me one year. Wouldn't you know it? It rained every day! I mentioned this to a local and he said, "Oh. This is our rainy season. It always rains."

Well! I had been there three years in a row and had never seen a drop of rain until that summer. And that after bragging to my wife how great the weather ALWAYS was, day or night. (Fortunately, it didn't rain 24/7 and when it did rain, it was still comfortably warm, day and night.)

Yes, Patricia, the grass DOES always seem to be greener on the other side of the fence. I guess we just make the best of what we have and dream of what it's like on the other side.

Well, GT as beautiful as the pictures are of AZ (never been there) it sounds like total hell to me. 125 degrees is like a common temp in the summer. I just can't even imagine what that would feel like - I start imploding at 90 degrees. Didn't know it ever rained there! LOL.

I would be happiest somewhere like Washington, surrounded by water (lots of islands and sounds) and where it rains all the time.

I am totally energized by rain and even when it is just acting like it might rain I can't stay in the house and have to find something to do to my plants or anything to be outside and get wet.

I can only enjoy it until the first reports of floods or other damage and then I have to feel guilty because I don't want it to stop ...

Hi, Partricia:

I'm not fond of rain (except in Tucson, where the rain was warm

). But I do LOVE being close to any body of water.

We have a river flowing through our town, which we enjoy for the sights and sounds. And the wife and I try to schedule time each day in the spring to try to be there when the ice breaks up. That's awesome to witness.

Decades ago, I lived for two years near the Atlantic Ocean and spent as much time on the oceanfront as possible (well, except in the winter! lol )

On warm days, I could spend all day exploring the lakeshore on any lakes available (of which we have many in the area) ... except, my first love is writing and IM, so I never seem to make it out to the lake! lol Oh, well.

We got four inches today with more on the way. I live at a ski resort, so those folks are mighty happy. (I don't ski...don't ask me

)

I slipped and fell today already, so got that going for me.

My 57 year old body isn't too thrilled right at the moment, though

Hey, Joe:

Skiing (downhill and cross country) is popular in our area, too, although I don't do it. Did a little when I was in my teens.

What I enjoyed when my kids were growing up was tobogganing (sliding) down the hills with them. Tore the ligaments in my knee a couple of times doing that - not bad enough that I was willing to go to the doctor, but bad enough to limp around for a long time.

Now that I'm close to your age, I don't think I'll be attempting that with the grandkids! :rolleyes: Well, hopefully not, anyway.

One of my best friends who I have dinner with once a week is 65 and he's a ski instructor.

But I'm about 6' 6" and he's about 5' 7" so I fall a lot harder than he does.

Tobagganing was a blast! Can't tell you how many trees were stubborn, unyielding and would not move out of my way no matter how hard I screamed LOL!

I hit too many to count, and was faceplanted in snow drifts too many times to count!

But best of all, that is the one large gift to all grandbabies we'll buy this year! I was struggling with that one. You have solved my dilema! Thanks!

But ya know what? I'm am going to go down the hill with them. I'm 47 not too old

, and only 5'2", so I won't fall as hard as KJ!:p

I am excited now, when it snowed 2 days ago I wasn't happy and when it got down into the teens last night, I wasn't happy, winter was coming!
But now, I'm happy, happy!

Like Sancho we got snow in October and nothing till just a few days ago. I have a love/hate relationship with snow. I do like it when I don't have to go outside but when I do (I have a walking job one week a month & it sucks in the wintertime) it's not fun at all. Plus, as the wife of a city worker we get the 2am calls in the morning for him to go plow snow. Always grates on my nerves when I hear people in town talking about the snow plow guys blocking them in or how the snow is in the way.....I'm sure my husband would be happy to trade early mornings with them and let them take care of it.

More snow is expected for the next couple days. The kids will love it cause there wasn't enough to make a snow man the last go round.

Don't mind the cold, but snow sucks, except on Christmas. Yes, we get a little rain in LV in the winter, but I figured out long ago that I don't have to shovel rain.

UGH, just woke up and I SCREAMED as a major dump of snow was outside.

I can hear some poor ******* down the street with car problems - sounds like he is stuck.

This looks like at least 5 inches, and it is heavy and WET. It's supposed to rain later which will probably slush it up a bit, but I am out of half - n - half for my coffee, and need to walk down to the corner and do not have any of my winter gear on me right now.

In college we did "traying" where we took the trays from the dining hall, and there was this steep hill just outside of the building that had a major drop point at the end so you'd actually be flying through the air. LOL - was fun until you slammed down too hard or broke your tray.

That sounds like a lot of fun!!

Until you got hurt or your tray broke!!

We have snow, changed to rain, changed to snow, very slushy and slippery!

Worst of all is the wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, we have a "power outage warning" believe it or not! Today, I'm a shut in (self appointed!):p

Just hope power stays on as I've work to do!!

Snow is ok, ice is not. Ice knocks out the power for weeks at a time and you cant go anywhere. If you've ever been in an ice storm, you know what I'm talking about.

Milwaukee was to get blasted but, ended up only a few inches.turned to rain.
While not far north it was much worse and in our capitol it was upto 16"! Holy Moly :O
We are due for so very high winds soon.and the temp due to drop so all that slush with become ice!
