Where I live here in NY we get at least one bear each year make it's way downtown, and subsequently get chased up a tree.

Outside of downtown its very common to find them rummaging through your garbage cans right at the side of your house.

I get a laugh out of the people that are amazed when they jump into any body of fresh water here, no matter how small, and find a gator living there. Old people are constantly losing their dogs because they walk that yapping fluffly little snack too close to the water and gaters will snatch them right off the leash.

Generally gators really arent all that dangerous unless they are hungry or you are threatening them or their nest.

I thought it was kind of sad that the gator had to be put down because its considered a 'threat'. It was just lost and we're on ITS land. They should have just taken it somewhere and released it.

If it was lost, it wasn't its land, was it?

If we get a bear in our yard, munching in the garbage, it is against the law to kill it, unless it is a direct threat - and you better have a witness or major injuries to prove that. You call the police and they get animal control and try to tranq it and return it to the woods.

I've always wanted a pet baby alligator, but 10 foot? That's a little outrageous to wake up to unexpectedly!

it was probably lost moving to warmer water. Around this time of year all the gators start heading to the north/center part of the state where all the freshwater rivers are. Most of them are springs that stay about 71 deg. all year long. As fast as things change around here, i can see why it would lose its way. I get lost around here sometimes and i've been here for almost 2 decades
