Acorn is a "public service group made up of community organizers" - that claims not to accept government funds and that is under investigation in several states for submitting fraudulent voter registrations by the thousands.

This group was one that promoted home loans to low income people - and helped those folks use the same subprime mortgages that brought the system down initially. The claim of not receiving federal money has been widely disputed.

This is, it seems, one of the sticking points for the Repulicans - if any money is made from the $700 billion - it doesn't go to the taxpayers. In fact, Acorn gets a good sized cut in the Democratic version that is now under consideration.

There's skunks in the woodpile, folks. Acorn is considered a left wing organization. Maybe this is one reason Obama hit the campaign trail while McCain went back to D.C.

I'd love to see what Obama would say if asked directly about this type of giveaway added by his party. In fact, it's a question that should be asked of Democratic leaders - and loudly.

Edit: Oops, there's more. La Raza and the Urban League are also included in the porkie pie

Apparent this is the part of the bill Dems are touting as "helping homeowners" - guess only the very poor left wing homeowners will be helped? Or does this just help the organizations supporting the Dems?

As a long time Democrat - the stuff this year is embarrassing me.

This is nothing new. That's why there was such a push to get the bailout through quickly. Reminds me of a pushy used car dealer - don't even think about it buy now

It's also a good reason for the public to let Congress know they won't tolerate these shenanigans.

I read a great idea in my local paper today. They had a better bailout plan:

"Instead of giving 700 billion to Wall Street, why not just divide that same amount of money by the 305+ million residents of the US. That should cure the economic doldrums quickly and fairly."

That will never happen, because the crooks that got us into this mess are the very same crooks pushing hard for the bailout with no strings attached.

We don't need Republican and Democrat answers -- they were both compliant.

We need a good court of law and a at least a dozen treason prosecutions.

If Republicans and Democrats were compliant we would not be in this mess, and there would be no need for treason prosecutions. They were complicit.

Even if there does end up being some windfall profits after all is said and done. The government would not give a cent back to taxpayers and nothing will be spent on the federal deficit either. The government is just going to get bigger. This is a scandal for sure. Seems like everyone knows it too but what can we do about it?

All you can do is play the game. Buy stocks and real estate if you can. They are cheap now, and there will be fortunes made.
