A few more days and it's gonna be the start of a new year, a new decade will also begin. Makes me think now what I have been doing for the past 10 years... Hmmm...

So, just for fun, here are some of the things that happened to me for the last decade. Some are very big and major while others were just, well, not so good to remember... Enjoy!
Please do share yours too!

2000 - The start of the new millennium. A lot of people were scared of the millennium bug, some were even saying it's the end of the world! Oh well, we're still here, so I guessed we survived! Computers and mobile phones were a luxury. I was also a junior Comm. Arts student then, and we won the Best in Print Ad for the advertising campaign competition we entered. Winning felt good!

2001 - I graduated and had my first job as a Marketing Associate in an IT firm. The year I learned about office politics, the hard way. Palm products were the rave. Computers and mobile phones are beginning to be a necessity in a common household. A very tragic event also happened this year -- the 9/11, which paved the way to more strict security measures. It was also the birth of Wikipedia.

2002 - I traveled to Davao, a great province here in the Philippines. I loved eating loads of Pomelos! Resident Evil became a huge hit. Queen Elizabeth also died this year.

2003 - I started my career as an Advertising and Public Relations Officer in a lifestyle publication. I learned how to multi-task as we were only four in the company. I wrote articles, did the lay-out for the magazine, joined in photo shoots, serviced clients, solicited clients, and all that jazz... It was fun though. It was also the year of the SARS scare... A lunar eclipse was also witnessed.

2004
- I was still working with the lifestyle magazine. Instead of giving us monetary bonuses for Christmas, our boss treated us to an all-expense paid vacation instead. We went to Boracay! It's a paradise-like island here in the Philippines. It was my first time there so I really had fun. The 2004 Summer Olympics was also held in Athens.

2005
- I had my "quarter-life crisis". Everything was good but I kept on
seeing the negative in them. I got a new high-paying job but it took its toll on my health. I got confined in an ICU coz of severe asthma. I had to rest for loooong period of time before I can go back to work again. I also broke up with my partner of four years then. Make Poverty History campaign also took place with 10 simultaneous concerts worldwide.

2006
- I got married through a hand-fasting ceremony. It's a wiccan ceremony. But it wasn't long lived, we broke up after a couple of years. I started working in an IT distributor company. I get to go to China and Hong Kong! It was my first out-of-country trip so I really was overwhelmed with joy! I love it, love it, love it!!! It was a tragic year though for a noon-time show here in the Philippines. They were about to celebrate their anniversary when a stampede took 74 lives and injured 600 more. The Blu-ray disc format was also released in the US this year.

2007
- I started working with an outsourcing company. It was very beneficial for me having to work at home coz of my asthma. It turned out to be very lucrative too! Apple announced the birth of iPhone. A poignant episode also happened on the premises of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as fellow student killed 32 students before taking his own life. The largest natural disaster in the history of the US also happened -- the Hurricane Katrina.

2008
- I got me some new lovin'! Yihah! I got "re-united" with my childhood friend who's already in the US now. We're officially one year and counting. Long distance relationship is hard but we're trying to make it work. It's not easy but you really just have to give all the trust, faith, love and respect to your partner, which is actually essential in all relationships. Philippines also took part in the Earth Hour, our household actually joined in on this. A rare grand conjunction in the sky was also seen, as the crescent moon, Venus and Jupiter formed the "smiley face on the sky". Obama also became the 44th President of the United States. Sad part of this year though was that my grandfather, whom we're living with, died in his sleep at the age of 86, and I was the one who found him lifeless in his bed. It was sad but at least we know he's in a good place now, free from
suffering.

2009
- hmmm...where to start?! Well, 2009 is not that good a year as a lot of "bad" things happened. As the Murphy's Law have stated, "If anything will go wrong, it will". So this year is the year of the Murphy's Law, hehe... :p First, the outbreak of the H1N1 influenza strain, more commonly known as the "swine flu" was considered a global pandemic. Fortunately though, no one in our family got affected by this. Then Typhoon Ketsana, locally known here in the Philippines as "Ondoy", hit the Philippines so hard that the state of calamity was declared in 25 provinces. We also got affected by this as our entire first floor got wiped out. It was nothing though compared to millions of families who have lost their homes and their loved ones from this disaster. One good thing that turned out from this though was the spirit of "Bayanihan" [or cooperativism, close translation but not quite] that still lives in us Filipinos, as every Filipino who can help their fellow Pinoys, did help in whatever ways they can - volunteer work, giving of relief goods, financial aid, and the like. An earhtquake and tsunami in Samoan Islands and an earthquake in Sumatra also took place almost simultaneously. The Mayon Volcano in here in the Philippines, renowned for its almost perfect conical shape, is also showing signs that it will soon erupt. The deadliest attack on journalists recorded also happened this year as they were part of the 57 people who were killed in an election-based massacre in Maguindanao, a province also here in the Philippines. Death from celebrities were also a big hit in 2009 - Natasha Richardson [Parent Trap, Blow Dry], David Carradine [Kill Bill], 11th Philippine President Corazon Aquino, Patrick Swayze [Dirty Dancing, Ghost], Michael Jackson [who doesn't know him?!], and most recently, Brittany Murphy [Clueless, Just Married, 8 Mile], to name a few. I have to stop here and 'coz all these are causing a negative effect on me already... So....

Now, with a new job and a stronger-than-ever relationship with my partner, I welcome 2010 with high hopes, lots of faith, love, and confidence that it will be a better year for all of us. So smile and be happy, the best is yet to come!

Cheers to 2010!

    Dammit, people.

Human beings do not start counting at zero!

    The CENTURY started in 2001.

The next DECADE starts in 2011.

2010 is NOT the first year of a new decade, it's the LAST year of THIS decade.

    Sheesh.

I thought so too, but apparently that's how they counted the past decade.

Oh well, to each his own.

Thanks for reading my post anyways.

I can't believe you got an infraction for that.

      It annoys me, also!

A decade is simply a period of ten years. It can be any period of ten years. If Hanako wants to discuss the last ten years and say a decade has passed she is right. If she is saying a new decade is starting she is also right.

In fact, this last ten years as a decade will be remembered as the 2000s. The 90s will be remembered as the years 1990 to 1999. The 80s is from 1980 to 1989 and so on. She is right!

        For further reference:

Although any period of ten years is a decade, a convenient and frequently referenced interval is based on the tens digit of the calendar year, as in using 1960s to represent the decade from 1960 to 1969.[1][2] Often, for brevity, only the tens part is mentioned (60s or sixties), although this may leave it uncertain which century is meant. These references are frequently used to encapsulate pop culture or other widespread phenomena that dominated such a decade, as in The Great Depression of the 1930s.

Some writers like to point out that since the common calendar starts from the year 1, its first full decade contained the years from 1 to 10, the second decade from 11 to 20, and so on.[3] The interval from the year 2001 to 2010 could thus be called the 201st decade, using ordinal numbers. However, contrary to practices in referencing centuries, ordinal references to decades are quite uncommon.

I like counting from zero. It reminds of an egg, where the start of some form of new lifes. It is even, and so smooth. It is not odd! I am going to start a counting from zero society!

Hanako, it is not very nice to join a forum and start giving infractions after having made just more than 20 posts within a month.

Although CDarkload did use some strong language, it was not directed at you and therefore should not be regarded as an insult. Morover, he is having quite a tough time at the moment and small gestures like could sometimes put people over edge. Although I am sure he is stonger than this.

lol.. I did not notice that.

CDarkload is a heavy metal guy. He is harsh but he speaks his mind.

And I don't think he is half as rude as some of the other members you'd meet here.

      Sumit.

Oh well, as I've said, to each his own. And thanks anyways for reading my post.

A great new year to you guys, and please, just stop the dissing. If you can't say anything nice, just don't say anything at all. Let's all stop being hyprocrites here, we're supposed to help each other out here, right?

    Good luck.

      It's Hesei 22 here in a few days - and I was born in showa 35 :-)

CD is morphing into a direct response copywriter atm and you know how feature/benefit driven they can be!

Probably, the only edge he's likely to drop off is the one leading from 3 to 4 fig copy gigs...

    Well I, for one, was . . . . . . .

    Born in the Fifties (1950 - 1959)
    Enjoyed (I think) the Sixties (1960 - 1969)
Got Married and Fathered Three Children in the Seventies (1970 - 1979) . . .

I could go on but that's my reckoning of the decades . . .
