How do I clear my temporary files

When my anti-virus scan runs, it takes 2 hours to do a "quick scan" of my computer. It seems to take the most time going through my temporary files. Unfortunately, I can't seem to locate the temporary files. Can anyone tell me how to clear or delete my temporary files?

Thanks,

Elizabeth

If you are on windows - go to your start menu and click on search - search all folders and files.
In the files to search for box type *.tmp
It might just bring up a few and ask you if it's getting what you want - click to continue.
Then just aim and delete at will

Try this CCleaner - Home - completely free and very widely used!! It will do exactly what you want (almost effortlessly) and more.

Oh - by the way -- you can rinse and repeat with *.log

You can get CrapCleaner (free) and control a lot of internet temp file build up.

Also turn off system restore, right click and "delete" - won't delete restore - just all the old logs, which can build up to many GB's over time. Then you can turn it back on and set a new restore point without all the old ones still clogging up your machine.

OOPS - posted this after the CC advice. CC does a lot of the temp files but you have to actually go into your computer to get them all and it doesn't touch .log files which can really add up to some serious space after awhile.

Also go to your email if you use a program like firefox and click "file" on the menu and then go to compact files and run that - you'd be surprised at how much space that's eating, too.

      Hi Sal

Not sure what you mean by "you have to actually go into your computer to get them all" - but you simply run the CCleaner program and choose which options you require.

CCleaner does get rid of .log files too (if you want it to - the OP mentioned temporary files only) - and, for anyone who is not too sure what they are doing, it is just a matter of checking boxes - possibly safer than deleting things manually.

      Just my thoughts.

I don't know what system or browser you are using.

But if you go to this website: How do I clear my web browser's cache and cookies? - Knowledge Base
it explains how to clear your temp files for different browsers
    in Mac or Windows.

    Hope this helps,
    james

P.S. I used the info myself. I have no affiliation with the website

Go to all programs, then accessories and find disc cleanup, click on it and it will bring up all unneccessary files for you to remove.

It could take a while, but then it will show how much space you will save, gives you the option of viewing those files, and then, you just click delete files button

Disk cleanup also leaves some temp files - and .log files, but is good for periodic cleanup. You have to actually search and pull up files to get ALL of them no matter what you use to clean up your files. And cleaning up files from the net doesn't get the files from actual system, either. Software won't dump old restore files either. You really need to go more manual with cleanup if you are running low on space. I do a manual clean twice a year.

It does? LOL - never saw that. I run my CC once almost every day, but every 5 - 6 months I do a more thorough clean and there is a lot that CC doesn't touch. I don't think I could have kept my computer running til I learned other pieces without the daily stuff CC gets rid of though. Still thanking my partner for introducing me to it.

When I said go in and get them, I meant to use the search from your start menu and search al files and folders for *.tmp and *.log files. I have used a combination of tools - advanced window care, disk cleanup, CC, etc - yet after a few months if I do a search, I sitll find a few that for some reason the software programs didn't pick up. Such as my awil .log file (avast) that was well over a thousand KB, yet untouched by any of my other programs.

I know she just asked about temp files, but I got the feel she was trying to do a cleanup and free more space as well as just dump cookies, internet histories, etc. All those things can slow a computer down, so I just gave some other examples of deletable files that can add unnecessary bulk.

I get you - Yes, I am sure there will be the odd file (maybe BIG odd file!) which flies below the radar. Manually is probably the only way to go then!

      Thanks Sal

Oddly enough, pj - the last time I went to defrag, I found so much space used it made my head spin. At first I thought "big virus" and started trolling all my folders to see what could be taking up so much darned space. Come to find out after a long time of looking here and deleting that - I used defrag even though I had less space (13%) than is optimal for defrag. Then I checked the frag log. What I found is that my Thunderbird email was really tanking my system -- so I went and compacted those files - and it cleared up an extra 17%. Nothing I use regularly ever touched that email file. So in one click I went from a slow computer at 13% space to a smooth running machine with 30% space. Go figure.

Someday I might just get good at this crap.

I downloaded CC and that did a really good job. It gives you alot of options as to what you want deleted.

I tried searching all files and folders for tmp files, but that didn't work. I have Windows Vista.

But like I said, CC did the job. Thanks for the great software!!!!!
