Best Gaming console/Computer gaming setups

I have been hesitant to buy a console because I feel I got burned when I bought Sega Dreamcast, and weeks after I bought it, they discontinued games and the like.

Some say xbox has the better graphics.

Others say ps2 has more games, but then, what about ps3???

One guy was going to build a console to include both, so he can switch from one to the other.

Xbox, Xbox 360, ps2, ps3, I'm still out to lunch on which is better and why.

Once, if ever , I make up my mind, I will have to go play one for a few hours to see if I will ever get used to the hand controls, never got the hang of those small buttons and controls, even with Sega Dreamcast.

I'm old school, I like the Arcade version buttons and controls.

I'm better at computer keyboard controls which brings up that subject.

Then you got the computer games, can't forget those, especially the fun one's I played like WAR and Generals, great game.

But for awhile, I was a CounterStrike fanatic, playing against others in different parts of the city, state and world.

But soon, the computer cafe limitations weaned me away, simply for the fact that their computer , even dsl, was too slow, compared to the other gamers I was playing, along with not even have quad core updates on the computer , etc....the only update was a flat screen monitor.

So you shoot someone , and it is too slow to register, so about time your bullet reaches its target, YOU have been shot 2 or 3 times by someone with a faster system/connection speed.

So if you have put together a gaming computer, what is the best option, all parts, to be able to keep up in the gaming world?

8 gig of ram ?

quad core processor?

the highest dsl or cable connection?

What have you put together that is satisfactory and can keep up?

I didn't really understand, but I'll try to help with the computer area. I don't know much about consoles, but being a competitive gamer I'd go for a Xbox 360 if I didn't love my mouse & keyboard so much. PS2 (and Xbox) is old now, and the PS3 was never appealing to me, from what I've heard it's only good if you do intend on using the blu-ray (one of it's main selling point).

What games would you want to play on the PC, and would you play them competitively? What is your budget (can't help too well without knowing)?

So far I see you've said CS:S, I love this game and it's still very competitive despite a lot of teams going back to 1.6 after CGS died. Luckily, it's a very old game, so the hardware requirements are very low as well.

But, if you plan on playing newer/better looking games or just want a more future-proofed system, a gaming rig built to run CS:S would end up causing problems.

Since a computer (especially for gaming) can be a bit of money, do you have any other uses? Video editing, graphics, etc. versus a little bit of Web browsing...

What wouldn't you need? Would you have to get a monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, speakers, mouse pad, and whatever else at the same time? I'm assuming you would also need an operating system.

If you have the time, I suggest reading around and asking questions at Tom's Hardware. Google it, I can't post links yet... it's very reputable, has tons of benchmarks for just about all hardware you can think of for many purposes (mostly gaming), and tons of knowledgeable people willing to help in the forums.

Also, research 'peer-to-server.' This is the way CS:S works (like most mainstream games), and doesn't require near as good of a connection a peer-to-peer game would. As long as you have a decent DSL/broadband connection, latency shouldn't be that much of an issue (unless you're VERY competitive, playing for money, etc.).

Post your results from Speedtest dot net and pingtest dot net, I bet your current connection is plenty. (Unless you're posting from somewhere out of home.)

That's all I can think of at the moment, I'll check this thread later. Excuse mangled ideas for now, it's like 6-7 AM (too scared to check heh) and I've been up all night with a playful/clever/curious 8 week old puppy. :p

For console players I guess PS3 is the best choice. It has slightly better performance than the Xbox360 AND it has blueray. You might think it's not important but it is, because Final Fantasy 13 came out recently and it's on blueray for PS3 and has full HD movies on it. For the Xbox360 version they had to cut out like 15 GB's of movies just to make it fit on the DVD's.

But I still consider PC to be god of gaming although it is much more expensive than consoles!
