I love NIN but I actually think Cash's version of Hurt was way better.... also on the same album Cash covered Depeche Mode's - Personal Jesus and he did that way better too... In fact that whole Cash cover album was pure Gold.

Kurt, love these! I have always loved the blues, though...

At one point....before the existence of the Allman Brothers, Duane Allman hung out here in the area at FAME Studios hoping to score a spot as a session player and make a few bucks. He, at first, actually slept in a tent behind the studio....

Long story short, Rick Hall finally gave him his chance and you can hear his work on several recordings done here in the very late 60's and early 70's.

At one point, "Wicked" Wilson Pickett was in town recording an album....the crew decided to break for a meal and had headed out to a local eatery. EXCEPT for Allman and Pickett.

You see, at that time, seperation of the races and predjudice were alive in well here in the Deep South. EXCEPT in the music community...for them it was ONLY about the music. I know because I grew up in that era and remember it well.

Anyway....Pickett and Allman chose to stay behind mainly because they were uncomfortable with the way they were viewed in public situations.

Allman because of his "hippie" style and long hair....and Pickett not exactly because he was black...but because it wasn't widely accepted to be seen hanging out with the "white folks" and would have had to be seated seperately anyway.

That's just the way it was in those days.

Since they had stayed behind of course...they needed something to do to kill time until the rest of the crew returned.

At some point, Duane started playing the Beatles "Hey Jude" and suggested to Pickett he try the vocals.

By the time the everyone returned to the studio Duane and Pickett played it for them and absolutely blew them away....

This is the result of that day,a long time ago in a little studio amongst the cotton fields of NW Alabama...true story.
