Hey Sal...I Got Good News (Updated Jan 7)

Well, after wracking my brains on this song, I decided to crank out the
nylon acoustic 6 string.

This is a good lesson for anybody writing songs to other people's lyrics by
the way.

The verse had me stumped so I went right to the chorus and started plucking
away. It came almost immediately and ultimately lead into the verse.

I've got the whole thing all mapped out, so tomorrow I'm going to go into
the studio and start working on laying down tracks. Unfortunately, my
daughter is home from school until the 17th and I'm taking her to work and
picking her up so I'm out of the house a lot the next 2 weeks. But after the
17th I'll be able to put a lot of time into this.

It sounds great on the acoustic and I'm wondering if I should actually use
it to record it. I don't know. I have to see how it translates to the electric.

Man, I'd forgotten how tough it was writing with somebody.

Makes me wonder how many songs Lennon and McCartney actually
wrote together.

Anyway...that's the latest. I'll update you with any developments in this
thread.

** UPDATE **

Hey folks...the song is DONE.

Here it is.

This whole thing is awesome, Steve.

You think that writing music for lyrics is tough? Try writing lyrics when you
have no idea what the tune is, LOL. I think we both have to have had some major
dementia at hand for this one.

No matter how it turns out though.....It was a great and fun experience and I'm
glad we did this. Next time, maybe you can write the tune and send it to me
to add the lyrics to it?

Frankly - I'm still having a hard time believing that I wrote lyrics that you actually
liked. Maybe I'm better at the weird forms of writing game than I thought I was.
    Lets hope so, eh?
Gives me hope for this damned novel I just started writing, though.

Actually, writing lyrics without music isn't that hard.

      Here's a trick.

Pick a melody that you know and write new lyrics to it.

You'd be surprised how many lyrics could fit multiple songs as there are
only so many meters you can come up with.

      That's another trick.

Come up with a rhythm in your head and write to that. It doesn't matter
if I know what that rhythm is or not because there are multiple melodies
that can be written to one rhythm.

And there are other things you can do that makes writing lyrics a piece of
cake. The hard part is getting them to make sense AND rhyme.

Of course not all lyrics have to rhyme, but then you better be one hell of
      a story teller.

I've always been fascinated by the art of songwriting because there are so
many ways to go about it.

Steve, as soon as it's done, I'm going to upload it to YouTube.

      I'm shooting for early February.

Thanks for the Info Steve. Um........looks like I did it right. I kinda sang
along while I was writing...as you pointed out though, my musical orientation is
bizarrely different from yours. You remember the email though that told you
what I had in my head for the melody of the first verse and the switch of tone
from there to the second? Yep - I was singing. But you don't want to know
more about that, because at that point it can become very scary science fiction.

      Steve,

Once you get the song on tape let me know if you want a video done for it.

I promise I'll make it better than the last one...

Karen, I can hardly wait, too. Not only am I not a lyrics writer, I am into a whole
different type of rock than Steve is. This is what you call something bizarrely new and different for 2010. Here's to hoping it's our year, eh? LOL.

KJ......um...Video? You're not gonna dance in a mankini or anything are ya?

        **UPDATE **

Sal, got the main acoustic and electric guitar parts down and the lead vocals
for the first part of the song up to the first chorus.

This is very different from anything I've ever done before.

Can't wait to see how it turns out.

I feel the need to pry my skull open with a screwdriver and scrub my brain with a wire brush to get that image out of my head.

different is good! it's always fun to challenge ourselves and step out of our comfort zone. I believe 2010 will be a good year for many of us.

Man-kini, bi-kini ... whatever KJ prefers to wear ... If the video includes "Sal's Song" with Steven's arrangement, I want to watch it.

No you wouldn't. Trust me, if that happened your words would come up faster than a gopher out of geyser hole.

At any rate, GT -- The fact that Steve is the vocals on the song should keep it safe to listen to at any rate. If I were the vocals, we might have some very interesting responses and any contract in the offering would be from pest control companies thinking that it was another new sonar device to drive off rats. Trust me on that one.

lol -- Maybe you are too self-critical? If not, I can relate: vocals are definitely my weak point -- that's one reason you don't see any videos of me.

So, with your good looks as the cover model (and with recognition for the lyrical inspiration), and with Steven's musical talent, it should make the WF Top Ten Hit Parade ... maybe even on YouTube, too!
