Why is the government allowed to keep Area 51 secret?

The government shouldn't keep such secrets from it's people. They won't even acknowledge it exists. And a lot of crazy stuff is going on in there nobody knows about but those on the inside. Why can't they be forced to stop keeping secrets? HeySal can't you do something?

History channel has a very interesting interesting documentary about it on google videos.

Area 51 was moved to some place in Utah years ago...

And the reason they can ( and should) keep things secret is for our national defense. It doesn't do much good to ahve secret weapons that aren't secret.

If you have advanced weapons that nobody else does, it would be a poor (and stupid) Government that says, "Hey everyone! Gather round... take a look at this!"

And, while I personally think Bob Lazar is a kook, he's right when he says a Government will do just about anything to protect it's secrets. They will. Including shooting you for a lot less than tresspassing on a top-secret military facility.

Me? LOL. Sure I can - I can ignore that comment.

I had a friend at UofM that thought we should know about it, too and went out to poke around. No one I know has ever heard from him since.

The Gov will do what the hell they want to whether we like it or not. All they have to do is say it's for our "safety". Now as far as getting the skinny on area 51 - it's very simple. Start a civil war and win it - then we can all get a peek into the area. Good luck and let us know when that is accomplished.

The government does NOT completely deny its existance. Even the above admits that. At 0:25 in, it says "Until recently, the authorities even denied there was a base." Doesn't that show that they no longer deny it?

My guess is that they never denied it. Because a denial means there is still the possibility - if you follow. Chances are the company line was, "we can neither confirm nor deny".

Anyway, I'm glad we don't share all of our secrets. There are some things our enemies don't need to know. And believe me, if we knew, our enemies will too.

Did it occur to anyone that the rumors of alien life being kept at Area 51 make our government happy? These rumors keep the focus off of what is really going on.

However, if you think a government should share ALL of its secrets, then you will have a hard time fiding any government in our world which fits the bill.

NO I am afraid this all goes way beyond Aliens. That territory they have roped off is major fine agate and gem hunting territory. Greedy *******s want them all for themselves. You will see those stones up on ebay in clandestine accounts now and again - but all we get are the left overs. They keep the good ones for their own shelves and pendants.

It's somewhat dissapointing to see the place full of cars parked beside run-of-the-mill buildings!

What happened to the busses with black-out windows trundling into openings in the side of mountains, etc.!?

Busses with black-out windows (so the aliens can be concealed) go into the side of Cheyenne Mountain and inside the mountain is the StarGate...

Area 51 is a high secure are of the sprawling Nevada Test Site where some of the most advanced aircraft in the world were flight tested, such as th U2, Blackbird, F-117 stealth fighters, etc. For just a $600 fine, you can climb over the fence and get a very brief look inside before being arrested.

Commuter service is provided along Groom Lake Road by a bus, catering to a small number of tourists (prisoners) staying in several small communities beyond the Nevada Test Site boundary. The bus travels Groom Lake Road and stops at Crystal Springs, Ash Springs, and Alamo, and parks at the Alamo courthouse overnight.

A number of unmarked aircraft operate daily shuttle services from McCarran to sites operated by Area 51 contractors in the extensive federally controlled lands in southern Nevada. These aircraft reportedly use JANET radio call signs (e.g., "JANET 6") (the JANET airplanes are now using either call sign "Bland" or "JANET" on the radio, and "WWW" on their flight number identifier), said to be an acronym for "Joint Air Network for Employee Transportation" or "Just Another Non-Existent Terminal". Area 51 advertises in the Las Vegas press for experienced military pilots, requiring applicants to be eligible for government security clearance, and that successful applicants can expect to always stay overnight at Las Vegas. These aircraft, painted white with red trim, include six Boeing 737/T-43As and several smaller turboprops. Their tail numbers are registered to the U.S. Air Force.

They are reported to shuttle to Groom, Tonopah Test Range, to other locations in the NAFR and NTS, and reportedly to Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. Observers tracking the number of departures and cars in the private parking lot at McCarran estimate several thousand JANET commuters each day. These shuttle flights were previously operated by Key Air, which had flown 22,000 passenger trips on 300 flights from Nellis Air Force Base to Tonopah Test Range per month from 1982 until early 1991. Security badge is needed for private escorted tours.

Many many moons ago I lived in Las Vegas and we would take regular road trips out into the desert to go hiking and exploring. One time we were out spending a couple of days in the wild and I guess we crossed into the forbidden zone because we set up camp and bedded down for the night and were woken up at about 4 AM by three jeeps and a dozen soldiers demanding our information and threatening to shoot us if we didn't leave immediately. It was six miles to the "safe" zone. We had to walk. At 4 AM. It sucked.

I think Steven Spielberg's "Indian Jones" movie best described Area 51. What if the US found a lot of items that are not from this planet? Where else can they store spacecraft, Russian spy satellites, developed superweapons, and a classified "bunker" when armageddon strikes and you need to save the best of humanity from extinction? Our curiosity could be our undoing but if we knew at least half of what they keep in there then just maybe, we would be fooling ourselves thinking that we really have what it takes to keep enemies at bay. Maybe we just have to ask ourselves the same question after 2012 as the doomsday cultists would like to believe.

I really doubt aliens or alien spacecraft are stored in Area 51. Its more likely a testing site for new technology and super weapons.

Probably a gigantic secret Military brothel where all the
top Brass and Politicians can visit for horizontal R&R after
playing the slots at Caesar's Palace in Vegas.

Probably best to verify that by checking connecting flights
from Langley, Washington and the Pentagon.
