Hysteria in the air???

Every time there is a foiled plot there are a dozen or more "problems" just following it.

A drunk on a place is subdued today - and two F-16 are launched to shadow the plane? Initial reports is man was drunk, locked himself in bathroom, was removed, cuffed and then f-16s launched.

Other incidents here and around the world involve comments made by intoxicated passengers, comments made by rude passenger that were considered threatening - and all were arrested.

Maybe we should just give a shot on takeoff and knock everybody out to avoid problems? Or test for drunkenness and slap on duct tape?

Maybe it's hysteria in the air and ON the air?

Well Kay since 9/11 every plot to blow up a plane that has failed was because the plane passengers stopped it.
Think how embarrassing that is to home land security when untrained citizens stop attacks from people that trained professionals allowed on the planes.
Now they're trying to look like they have a clue, which they still don't if they are targeting drunks.

Well probably best not getting drunk and announcing just before take off you are going to blow the plane up....like 3 idiots did tonight just before a plane took off from heathrow to Dubia. Armed police were called and remove 3 men for questioning. The plane is being searched overnight.

It appeared the man meant no harm and merely wanted to follow the woman into the secure part of the concourse to say goodbye. He was seen elsewhere on surveillance video leaving the airport about 20 minutes after he breached security.
And for a moment of stupidity - the guy is being charged with "tresspass" and the guard will likely be fired.

There are incidents every day - but it's only after a foiled plot that we hear of them every day.

The dumbest kneejerk I've seen was at work. It was a few months after 9/11 and a player at my table was teasing around with me. We were joking and everyone was having a good time.

He was talking about hunting and the word "gun" was mentioned once - totally in context as we were discussing the possibility of deer fighting back....

A few minutes later two security guards arrived - seems the flighty floor person heard the word "gun" and interpreted it as "threat" without knowing the context of the conversation. How stupid can you get?

God knows what would have happened if anyone said "box cutter"....pure chaos, I'm sure.

This is getting slightly off topic (yeah even here...lol) but those casino security guys are on the ball, in my book.

My brother and I were in Tunica and playing quarter slots one night. I had about 5 of those plastic tubs full of quarters on the shelf in front of me (a good night!). I dropped a bill on the floor and reached down to pick it up and in those 2 or 3 seconds a man walking by me reached OVER me and snagged one of those tubs. When I sat back up I immediately noticed the gap....looked to my right and see this guy walking away with his hands in front of him. I quickly tell my brother to keep an eye on my stuff and took off after the guy.....

By the time I hit the end of the aisle 2 big dudes in suits were in MY face, blocking me (and telling me "calm down we've got it under control") at the same time I see 2 more grabbing this guy by each arm and stopping him.

This whole "incident" couldn't have lasted more than 20 or 30 seconds but to this day I still think "How the H$%^ did they DO that?

It was like, I felt alarmed and suddenly these 4 guys just popped out of the floor or something...

      Dave,

That reminded me of a something that happened at the Mirage a few years a go. My wife and I were playing the quarter poker machines and the guy at the end machine got up to get some more quarters.

By the time he got back a little old lady had just started putting quarters into "his" machine and the guy just blew it at her.

He starts going on and on about how he had stuck so much money in that machine and now she was ruining his chances for a payoff. And I mean he made quite a specticle of himself.

No security guards intervened, but I'm sure the camera guys noticed it. He went and sat at the end machine in the next isle over glaring at this little old lady.

On her third push of the button she hit a royal straight flush and won $1200.

The look on his face was priceless...

On another forum someone posted a little experiment. Put your TV on FoxNews, then count the number of seconds until you hear the word terror/ist/ism or security. I don't get FoxNews where I live so I can't test it, but apparently no one has made it past 30 seconds. Maybe someone here could do it and post results. It certainly points to a reason for some of the hysteria.

That is just GARBAGE spewed meant to make them look bad. There have been whole shows where they go the entire show without mentioning it AT ALL! Just today I saw a GLENN BECK show where they didn't mention it AT ALL! NOW, if there is a NEWS program, and it is a time such as NOW, there may be times where you could go several minutes and hear the word terror... a LOT. SO WHAT ELSE IS NEW!? What should they say?

BTW right now I am watching TBS. I don't always watch FoxNews, but I may have seen every program they have now, and have watched enough to know that that 30second observation is GARBAGE!

Just for laughs, I JUST turned on FoxNews. It has gone SEVERAL minutes with NO mention of terror.... It is Geraldo at Large, and they are talking about Murray being charged with involuntary manslaughter for Killing Michael Jackson. Somehow, I DOUBT they will talk about terror.... on this show, and I mean in ANY context! They are going into great detail about the drug and needs of administration. STILL no mention of terror....! They spoke about what they WILL talk about, STILL no mention. OK, COMMERCIALS! Iams(dog food), Geico(insurance),oracea(a drug to clear up rosacea), publishers clearing house(10,000,000 instaprize), american idol(talent show). NEWS update, earthquake! Back to geraldo, and still NO talk of terrorism. NOW they are talking about the NBA gun discovery! BTW Just the COMMERCIALS took about 30 seconds EACH!

BTW They ALSO plan to talk about the keenes on another show, they talk about other things also. Oh well, take my word for it, the 30 second theory is HOGWASH!

OK, I think I'll try to get back to my TBS show.

WHY do they have only ONE door at the exits ANYWAY! They always have like ONE person there that is like half asleep, and the person is CARELESS and the door is often held OPEN! They are LOOKING for trouble. If they had say 2-3 doors, like locks for a boat, it would greatly enhance security and they could automate much of it.

STILL, that person that went into the sterile area broke federal law. He broke a law that is OLD! Couldn't he have waited just a FEW minutes? And I am SHOCKED he is only fined $500. He caused FAR more damage, and only gets a fine of $500!?!?!?

    Let's see...

You are on a plane with maybe 150 people within 30 minutes of reagan. Fine for getting up and walking? $11,000!

You trespass into a sterile area, and force the shutdown of an airport for 1 hour, possibly let others in, possibly contaminate the sterile area(Like with a BOMB, or giving a cohort a weapon). Fine is $500!

Doesn't sound fair. BTW on most flights to reagan, those rules are stated(required BY LAW), but IGNORED!!!! I have seen several walk up and down with not even a REPRIMAND! The law in place, since they reopened after 9/11/2001. says that someone getting up in that manner should force diverting to ANOTHER airport, and they should be prosecuted. The intent of the laws is to lessen the chances of an attack on Washington DC. and I guess they figure Dulles and Baltimore(The other two "washington D.C." airports), aren't close enough to be a threat. There HAVE been at least THREE cases where the flight WAS diverted, etc....

STILL, the airports and crews are NOT without any guilt. I'll never forget when a traveler got SUED for breaking a gat agents neck. Sounds open and shut, huh? Well, in the trial it was revealed that the jetbridge did NOT go to a plane, the traveler's little girl ran down it, the mother chased after her, and the father tried to get them back, and the gate agent was in his way. He should have EXPECTED to get hurt. The jet bridge, BY FEDERAL LAW, was supposed to be LOCKED!!!!! The gate agent was not supposed to let ANYONE on! So he broke federal law, endangered a little girl, and her family tried to get her back. Had she ran too far, and slipped, she could have gone flying off a jetbridge that was well over a concrete slab. I've seen THOSE laws broken a lot AS WELL! Stay in an airport long enough and you will hear a gate alarm. The agents are NOT supposed to set it off, but they DO! If it DOES go off, they are supposed to take care of it. They treat it like most treat car alarms. Maybe in a few minutes or an hour, they'll get to it.

I think a lot of it is the powers that be try to keep this country in fear.

Everytime people start griping about loss of freedoms for 'security' or the last scare is wearing off and people are beginning to question the validity of the choices the admin makes when it comes to freedom and civil rights..then "suddenly" there is some new 'threat' that is supposed to make us run for the 'safety' of our government.

Shows/people like Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh make their living on this kind of crap Steve. They get paid by poking at the fears of the population and making people think that their fears are justified (and sometimes they are).

They are the video version of Alex Jones. If you dont know who he is, go look at prisonplanet.com or infowars.com. He has about 9 big name sites that do nothing but fan the flames of people's fears of attack, other cultures, the goverment..etc. And he plays himself off as being a 'patriot' that is just informing his fellow countrymen, and he will help you stave off the impending doom...with bumper stickers, dvd's and books written by him.

Actually, OTHERS tend to talk about how they shouldn't remove even a SCARF because of some supposed religious belief. Frankly, I wish they would get dogs in, and try to treat the sterile area like a sterile area. Hire based on MERIT and maybe THEN raise the hourly rates, like you want so much.

Well, they ARE usually justified. STILL, the word terrorist or even terror, doesn't come up that much. You can go HOURS, sometimes WEEKS without hearing it. And that is NOW when it is "fresh".

      Steve - that's just wrong.

These women have been willing to remove their headwear but request privacy when doing it. If TSA had an ounce of sense they would USE the private screening rooms they have and send a female TSA officer in with the person.

If you target the scarf on one person - how can you ignore the loose sari on another? Or a turban for that matter?

The current practice is to provide a private room only if the passenger knows enough to ask for one. The headwear for some religions is worn to show modesty - removing it in a public place is embarrassing for them.

How would you feel if women were told they had to remove their blouse - or men were required to remove trousers so their underwear could be checked?

Wouldn't it be just as smart to check bras and jockeys as to check headwear? Everyone knows those two garments are frequently "stuffed". Would it bother you if you had to "take it off" in the view of multiple other passengers - men and women?

Would you mind if you were able to go into a nearly private cubicle and remove your trousers in the presence of one man?

GEE, You don't know me very well. I am ALL for privacy(In school I wanted my privacy to my detriment, if you understand what I mean...), though I hink a scarf or turban is going a little TOO far, but I am NOT talking about their request for privacy, they just said it was a RELIGIOUS issue.

That was my point, Steve - the religious issue IS the privacy for them. To demand head coverings be removed in public (which has been happening) is to them the same embarrassment as someone being asked to remove a piece of clothing.

I'm just saying that we need to show some respect for the religious beliefs of everyone. That means OFFERING a private room for the search rather than expecting an uninformed public to know they can ask for one.

If we can't balance safety with privacy and respect for the belief of others - what makes us so special?

respect is not a one way street.

The only problem is, showing respect for their religion flies in the face of public safety when that particular part of their religion conceals their identity and gives a fantastic place to hide weapons/explosives..etc.

Now if they WERENT part of a group that were attacking us, i'd fully agree with what you said. But since they ARE part of a group thats attacking us, it is THEIR job to be 'understanding' and show respect for the place they wish to enter or call home.

The country doesnt bend to meet them...they assimilate with the country.

They did not want to remove it *****PERIOD*****! It was NOT a privacy issue!

as for "what makes us so special"? WHO claimed that we were claiming we were special? What makes *****THEM***** so special that they get SPECIAL RIGHTS and use them to trump OUR right to LIBERTY(As stated in the constitution)! Take a chill pill, Steve. I watched interviews with several muslim women and all were willing to remove their headdress but said they would be uncomfortable unless it was done in private.

What is the point? Is it to prove how tough we are? Some of this stuff just makes us look like a screaming mob of idiots. Common sense should apply as should respect for each other.

These women wore headwear - but most of them were US citizens just trying to go from one place to another.
