Hey Sal...We Need Help

Well, I got my new Songwriter's Market 2010 today and anxiously opened it
up to find...

Almost nothing.

Things have changed DRASTICALLY since the early days of the Songwriter's
Market, some 30 years ago.

For starters, the number of publishers in it has decreased DRASTICALLY.

It took me maybe 30 minutes to go through the whole thing.

In addition to that, most of the publishers in it now only accept submissions
from songwriters who have previously had songs published and recorded.

I can only speculate as to why the decrease in listings. Possibly because
many publishers have gone out of business since home production is now
so affordable and many artists simply record their own material.

As I suspected, very few listings of publishers looking for alternative music.
This doesn't surprise me as most alternative bands write their own material.

What I found was what I expected to find, publishers looking for country,
bluegrass, pop, R&B, rap, soul and essentially the kind of music that would
fit an artist who most likely wouldn't be a songwriter.

In addition to that, the Songwriter's Market has essentially become a
book about tips on how to record and submit demos, what to watch out
for as far as scams, and so on.

For somebody who has been in the business for a long time, the book is
pretty much worthless as there are NO new listings. I found this to be
almost unbelievable.

Ultimately, I found just 2 publishers that we might have a shot with.

I will put together a CD for each and send it out. We should know in
6 to 8 weeks, which is pretty standard in the industry.

If anybody has contacts in this business, preferably with alternative
music, yeah, I'm publicly coming to you guys for help. My own smarts
aren't going to be enough. I have limited options and all my past
connections are either deceased or I've lost a way to contact them.

My mom had some heavy connections (including the guy who wrote for
the 4 Seasons and the guy who discovered Levine and Brown, who wrote
for Tony Orlando and Dawn.) But she's gone now...and with her a whole
musical contact sheet.

Am I a little discouraged?

After 25 plus years beating my brains out in this business...yeah, a little.

It seems like it's getting harder and harder instead of easier and easier.

Anyway, I'm swallowing my pride and asking ANYBODY who has any
connections in this business to help us out. We're not performers and
we're not looking to record this ourselves. We're looking to have an
established act cover the song.

A publisher would have been the best shot (and I'm still going to submit
to those 2) but I know from experience that you're lucky to get one
acceptance from 100 submissions.

Oh well...at least I got my health...sorta.

If someone in MI can get me a line to the Nug, I might be able to find out more or get an in. The only way I can see to get ahold of Teddy boy is to pay to join his website. Yeah, that's gonna happen.

Sal, Bug Music isn't listed in the guide and I doubt they take unsolicited
submissions. And a call from some guy they don't know from Adam is
probably not the best course of action. Have you seen their site? These
      are BIG BOYS.

I wouldn't even know how to begin to approach them and if you do it
wrong, you're sunk. With these guys, you get one shot and that's it...
usually through a lawyer or agent. I doubt they will deal with me directly.

Hell, for that matter I might as well just submit a CD to Chrysallis Records.

Thanks for the idea, but I need somebody with clout to even get these
guys to give our stuff a listen.

This is right off of Bug's FAQ page.

What criteria do I as a writer/publisher need to meet in order to
qualify for Bug Music's administrative services?

We look for catalogs with active, earning copyrights. Generally speaking,
this would include songs on CDs and tapes or in film and television, both
        domestic and foreign.

If I don't have any current income, can I still sign to Bug?

In some instances we enter into agreements with writers who do not have
earning copyrights. Pending record deals, pipeline income and synch
activity can all enter into this decision.

In other words, they don't deal with amateurs like me.

But it was a nice thought anyway.

Welll, Steve - I was only able to get to the Nug by proxie, so it will depend on how unusual I made the request sound whether he even gets the damned note or not. I am not thinking it looks real promising. Oh well. I have no clue anyhow so don't know exactly how to help out if the Bug suggestion isn't any good.

Sal, don't sweat it. I know this isn't your business. It's supposed to be
mine. I'm supposed to have all the answers. And after 25 freaking years, I
      should have all the answers.

But it seems this business just gets more and more complicated.

I always believed that it wasn't how good you were but who you knew.

I'm starting to believe it more and more everyday.

Anyway, I'm not giving up. I'll give up when they put me in the box.

Got 2 publishers to send CDs to. Let's think positive and believe that at
least ONE of them flips when they hear our song.

KJ - Bobby used to babysit my late fiance when he was in diapers (he was younger than I by a good number of years (not Bobby). Freddie Boom Boom Canon lived in my town, but was a lot older -- I went out with Ted a few times and he ditched me off like a bad habit after a few dates. One of my best friends went steady with Edgar Winter's kid brother, and Stevie Miller thought he could break my heart but I pegged him as an asshole right from the get.

I lived where a lot of the 60 - 70's era groups grew up. Of course, they weren't famous then and I am sure that not one of them would know me today if I walked into a room without at least 4 rounds of you remember this place, etc.

            Terra,

After that POS scuzbag took some cheap shots at me and my family the other day I'm not about to let strangers hiding behind a keyboard have too much leaway.

There are some real creeps on this forum as on all forums, so you never can tell until they strike who they might be.

            I'm almost sorry I brought this up...:p

Hey Bill, I checked out that thread and even gave the OP some suggestions.

Problem is, all that advice (and it's great advice) doesn't work for songwriters
who don't perform their own material, or at least don't want to perform
            their own material.

If I'm going to go that route, I'm going to have to pay a professional demo
service thousands to do the song the justice it needs to have a chance to
            sell it outright.

And then I have t do all the marketing and PR myself.

When all I'm looking for is a publisher to get an A&R guy to get a label to
get a group to put the darn thing on CD, it's just way too much work.

Plus, I still don't have the clout that these major labels have so how many
copies am I realistically going to sell?

Unfortunately, the songwriter's road is a lot tougher to travel.
