Is a bird in the hand worth 2 in the bush?

My mother used to always say "a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush." She meant that it is better to have money in your hand that you are sure of before counting money that might not come your way. I just used money as an example it could be anything. This is the safe method naturally but do people make money by being safe all the time. Do they take risk?

Why am I getting the impression that you had the bird in your hand for dinner?

To make money you have to take some amount of risk.

For example, even to start the cheapest type of business - a website - you have to pay for the domain and hosting (I know, you can get free hosting, but most free hosting is worth the price paid.).

The real difficulty is in balancing the right amount of risk with the right amount of safety.

My initial response was if you want to achieve great things you have to take bigger risks.

However, we're always hearing of people who put a little money into an untouchable savings account every month for many years and ended up with massive compound interest and a very comfortable nest egg. So, maybe, if you start early and do it right, you might be able to play it safe and make a nice sum of money?
