I just had to get my first pair of glasses. At least I made it to age 50+ I guess, but it's still hard for me as when I was younger my vision was tested at 20/15 and even 20/13 (better than 20/20).

I swear all the time spent in front of computers is to blame.

What's your vision and how old were you when you got your first pair of glasses/contacts (if you wear them)?

Just last year I got my first pair (age 46-7). I only need them for reading so far.

Beat my younger brother. He's been wearing specs for over a decade. He's going bald AND grey as well. Whereas I've still got hair with its natural colour. Although when I don't shave the whiskers are grey. Go figure.

Do I rag my brother for going bald, grey and blind before me?

    Damn right I do.

Don't know what my vision is only that it has drastically improved over the last few years.
I started wearing glasses in the first grade when it was discovered I was near sighted. The eye doctor told me my vision would worsen until I hit my 40's then improve. Now when I say I was near sighted I mean anything further then a foot away was blurry. Now I haven't worn glasses in over a year and passed my drivers eye test last year without them, first time ever.
Now at 56 my eye sight is the best it has ever been, just need reading glasses now

I have heard more than a few people say that if you actually devote time to doing exercises for the eye, and DONT wear your glasses, that your eyes will improve.

I started wearing reading glasses at 40 - My first pair from a place called ForEyes.

The Optician said that this is normal. For other vision I have always had better than 20/20 vision until recently. I do believe computer use is making it worse

I also could swear the glasses are making it worse. Every year they get stronger. I can not see mid-range without them now.

Every year I complain and every year they tell me I have great vision except for reading. I really think I will be blind someday.

I do focus on something far away across the bay and even if all you have is a wall in your room - if it is farther away than your monitor, you will be doing your eyes a big favor to remember to look at something far away several times a day. (important enough to get up and look out the window if possible) - this is what is taught to large corporations in ergonomics.

Michael - I couldn't read without them or see the computer.

My vision? Fantastic today and improving by the minute.

Have had serious cataract in left eye for over 1 1/2 years and the VA finally paid a surgeon on a fee basis to fix.

Total time? Just under 2 hours. Time in surgery? About fifteen minutes.

Was down to no night driving at all and extremely unsatisfactory depth perception.

Back to 20/35 or so in both eyes now. Feeling FANTASTIC!!!!!!!

I wore glasses all my life. When I hit my late 40s I was told I had cataracts developing.

A few years later I had cataract surgery in both eyes. I developed problems. They told me less that 3 percent of people undergoing hte surgery have problems.
For the next several years I was regularly seeing eye specialists. My vision greatly imporved in one eye, and its so-so in my other eye.
I had to get shots in my eye, with one eye being done, but I was and still am unable to get the second eye done due to insurance issues. One day I hope to finish the repairs.

    Same here Kurt...

The only thing I CAN see well without them is my computer screen. I had already noticed I was having trouble reading street signs from any distance a couple years ago and one day...just for the heck of it I picked up an old pair of my daughters glasses and put them on. Holy Crap! I could see...!

Went to the eye doctor and got a prescription about a week later.

And yes....I blame it on too many hours staring at the computer.

I didn't get my first pair until I was about 35. I didn't need them, but the stupid doctor claimed that a problem, that I STILL have, was caused by eyestrain and that the glasses would fix it. SO, I kept wearing the glasses, ALL THE TIME! STUPID! NOT because I needed them, but because I was told I had to "get used to them". Then, later, it was habit or need. I forgot that sometimes "get used to" means "dependent on".
By about 40 or so I needed a new pair.

BTW my vision was tested as 20/25 when he prescribed glasses.

The optic nerve degenerates faster over time with the following:
      Milk cheses & dairy (pasturized)
      Breads with yeast & grains
Obviously drugs & chemicals - do what you can... And,
Odly enough waters. They have solvents and are acidic - learn more about water.
Soy and corn along with high heat cooking also muck with your Gene's and hence vision.

Green smoothies never killed a guy
      Berries & cleansing fruits
      and consider going allergen free.

Mercola.com shirleys wellness cafe and curezone are great sources.

I will apologize for the harsh read & quick grammar.
On the fly and wanted to offer some insight.

My eyes have never known 20/20. I didn't get my first pair of glasses until the 4th grade when the doctor actually did not believe that I did not have glasses already. My eyes at that point were in the 20/200 range without correction. He said I was the worst he'd seen for going so long before being discovered.

I can tell you that I was completely amazed to look out his window and find out that leaves had veins in them. I had never seen those details before.

My eyes are defective due to some sort of weird growth problem (they are not shaped like normal eyes). The worsening was supposed to stop when I reached full growth but they have slowly worsened since then.

I don't know the numbers now but one eye is just this side of legally blind and the other is slightly better.

Now the little space I had that I could see pretty clearly with correction is gone and I need to get bifocals - oh, yay. Oh, and they haven't been able to bring me to 20/20 with glasses for twenty years. The best I get now is 20/30.

The good news is that I shouldn't end up blind.
