I guess I should have known better. But hey, why did the "last person who posts gets a ...." thread get deleted?

Tim, it didn't get deleted...it crashed. At page 79, it wouldn't load anymore,
so either a mod cleaned up the dead wood or the pages got dropped. Then,
when Karen started it up again on page 1, we just all reported it to kill it.

No sense going through all that again.

But a lot of fun stuff was lost.

well i would guess because it was so stupid? plus the guy who promised the prize disappeared and maybe that is not politically correct. way.

... with that said i really think some get deleted by glitch or accidentally.

with the weather the last one seemed very civilized at least the last time i saw it. i was always under the impression even with taboo subjects as long as nobody got nasty or reported some real or imagined offense that it would slide.

    dunno...

I actually think Steven is right. I think the thread self destructed.
He is. If it was there and wouldn't load, it wasn't a moderator action. Besides, why would anyone delete it? I don't recall ever having seen a complaint about it, out of nearly 4000 posts.

      Pat,

Nope. It's already been established that topics that can become partisan almost certainly will become partisan. When that happens in here, otherwise rational and intelligent people lose their grip on sanity. It's just not worth it.

A: It doesn't. Even if it's not discussed outside of here, the conflicts interfere with other things going on in the forum. When you insult huge chunks of the population in the way that some of the comments in these threads have done, that's bound to have a wider impact.

B: It discourages new members from participating. In some cases, from even coming back.

C: It encourages a particular kind of incivility that's way beyond simple personal flaming. Specifically, the "If you're not with us, you're evil" kind that creates enemy camps within any group.

D: Insanity is not conducive to the kind of rational thought that benefits business efforts. And yes, I mean that word literally. I genuinely believe that some of the comments made in those discussions were the result of situational insanity.

E: This section contributes exactly nothing to the stated purpose of this forum. It's a courtesy, and if it becomes too much of a problem for the rest of the group, it's one that can and should be removed.

      F: "Cause Allen said so.

It doesnt take a religious or politics discussion to get people pissed, or to affect relationships in this forum. You probably can't swing a dead cat in the OT without hitting someone SW has sworn to never to do business with because of something being said that he didnt like that had nothing to do with politics or religion.

And i think the OT offers a sense of community to this forum. You can't talk about business 24-7. 'all work and no play....'

Rational intelligent people can have discussions about anything with it being nothing more than a discussion. The ones that can't will cut their own throats, but I hardly doubt that on a forum like the WF that has a long standing name in the IM field that an ot forum that most of the people either dont know about or dont visit is going ot affect traffic one way or the other...especially if it were prefixed with a warning of 'enter at your own risk'

        but...allen is da boss.

That post was like sneaking into a candy store, snatching your favorite piece
then leaving while you dad throws a quarter to the clerk.

We all had a blast over the Holidays posting in the thread. As I said before it's
self destruction was actually a God send...lol

I had over 560 posts in the thread... I can imagine what someone would
have though when they checked my stats and seen some of the crazy things
    I was saying.

Anyway, There was no known cure for the addiction to the thread so the
only way any of us were going to get out of it was if it self destructed.

PS. Paul, Thanks for shedding some light on the subject.

      Michael,
It doesnt take a religious or politics discussion to get people pissed, or to affect relationships in this forum.
That's true. But those are the topics that create large scale divisions. Individual personal interactions are the challenge of the individuals involved, not the group as a whole.

I think it's been made pretty clear that personal nastiness gets a lot more leeway than calling huge swaths of the population vicious names because you don't agree with their political views.
And i think the OT offers a sense of community to this forum. You can't talk about business 24-7. 'all work and no play....'
We had a pretty strong sense of community long before there was ever an offtopic section to this forum, Michael. This section takes away from that for the group as a whole, as I see things playing out.

Understand: I am explaining, not debating. I don't make the rules. I do happen to firmly believe that Allen would delete this entire section long before he'd remove the rules against discussion of religion or politics.
Rational intelligent people can have discussions about anything with it being nothing more than a discussion.
Yep. I have those kinds of spirited discussions all the time. Even in bars. Just not with people who play the game the way it's played here. I don't talk to people who behave that way at all, about anything, offline.

I don't interfere with them. I simply remove them from my life, completely.

Whether you believe this stuff can have an effect on the group as a whole or not is pretty much irrelevant. I see it, in ways that are more than explicit. I've seen it over and over again, for more than 20 years. When it gets as bad as it was here, the solutions are very limited. In order of preference:

1: Forbid the topics and enforce that prohibition rigorously.

      2: Delete the whole section.

      3: Delete the offending members.

There are plenty of places that exist for the purpose of discussing politics and religion. It's not as though those conversations are suddenly unavailable to you.

As long as people respect the rules, it never has to go past the first option.

I don't know that I did, except that it doesn't appear to have been a moderator decision. I don't know if it was a one-off glitch, a setting in the vBulletin config, hardware issues, or something else.

The Nonsense thread used to glich etc after a certain amount of pages, too -and that was without it being loaded with pics and videos. It was after the thread got to somewhere around 70 pages, too. Eventually chunks of it disappeared. Never was sure if that was the mods cutting out chunks so it could continue -It was a three year long thread, seems a shame to just archive it - or weather the system itself just went loony on it. It eventually let us past page 80 but was a monster to load.

One thing we have found out though is that this rocket doesn't like page 80 for some reason. Maybe there is something politically or religiously inherent in that number.

Have I told you today that you're a smartass?

I tend to think it's a database issue, personally, but that's just a gut feeling based on watching long threads. Nothing to back it up beyond that. I haven't seen enough threads that length to call it more than a hunch.

MANY browsers, and I guess it makes sense, considering how HTML is formatted, sometimes have to download an entire section(which may be the whole page) before they render it. They ALSO tend to only wait so long before they timeout.

I'm not saying that IS what happens, only that that can cause problems.

I WAS surprised how long the climate page stayed up.

So, how IS the weather? Anyway?

Please answer at your own risk.

It's been nice and rainy here on the left coast and still cold. We need the water and I love the air afterward. Even a little drama with lightening and thunder this week.

Must be some kind of a conspiracy...

In boston, it was VERY cold. There was ice on the ground(Burlington doesn't allow salt). In cincinatti, it was apparently warm. They are saying like 40s and 50s! In Fort Wayne, it is in the high 30s.

      Go figure...

It's supposed to be 41 here in Erie tomorrow, and 47 Sunday. Then it starts sliding back down to the low 20's during the week.

Nice weekend for a drive. I may go out and get some snow pics this weekend.

You still have snow on the ground Paul?
Up here by Albany it's almost all gone.
Only 23 here so far today, but tomorrow it's suppose to be in the 40's with a butt load of rain

            Thom,

Here in Michigan we've had 4 days in the high 30's, several days of rain, and still have 3 or 4 inches still on the ground...here in Lake Orion anyway!

I'm at one of my areas weird transition zones.
Here the snow is patchy. Drive down the road towards Troy or Albany and the snow is gone after you go about 300 yards. Drive up the road towards Vermont or Mass. and there's around 6in. on the ground a 1/4 mile up the road.
