Is this really necessary? Or just P.C.?

It's 7 pm here and I just turned on the TV to see what might be worth watching.

There is a fund raiser for Haiti running on every net work (abc, nbc, cbs, FOX). It is also running on CNN and MSNBC.

Only Fox News and CNBC are running regular programming.

Do I care what happens to the people of Haiti? Of course I do.

But is it necessary to force the public to watch a fund raiser for Haiti? Shouldn't there be some choice in programming?

I think the outpouring of support and funds by people in the US has been amazing - though I've wondered what the level of contribution has been from big pharma to an island where medicines are desperately needed.

But I don't fancy the idea of being told I am only allowed to watch one program becuase the powers that be think I should.

kay

Edit: I should have said outpouring by people of the world!

Have you seen Hotel Rwanda? Ever see that part where joaquin phoenix talks about all the people watching at home eating dinner and they say oh how sad--- and then they continue eating? Your post made me think of this.
Anyway back to the point- can you imagine the scrutiny these networks would receive if they didn't air the fundraiser?
Maybe get a DVR service so you can watch what you want when you want? That's what i do!
Good luck finding something to watch!

Kay, I hear you. I won't be watching TV tonight...I barely watch it anyway, except for a few shows here and there.

I can channel surf with the best of 'em:p

Ended up on Discover and then A&E. I wasn't paying attention to the programming anyway.

It sounds crazy but I'm in one of those days when the work to do is longer than the day to do it in and after about 10 hours I just wanted some "people noise" which TV is usually for.

Have you seen Hotel Rwanda? Ever see that part where joaquin phoenix talks about all the people watching at home eating dinner and they say oh how sad
I've seen it and have watched and cried at the misery on every news channel with more to come. This tonight seemed like coercion - you WILL watch or else. I chose "or else".

Back to work - about 3 more hours to go...ugh

    I don't watch TV.
I know, crazy as that may seem to some people but about five years ago I moved into a new house and I decided I wasn't going to hook up my TV and that I would use the time I used to spend watching TV more productively. so 5 years later I still haven't hooked it up. i do have a DVD player connected so I will rent a movie a couple of times a week but that's it. All the news I need comes from the internet and it is usually a lot more current than the TV anyway.
As for the original post, it all boils down to ratings. People love to watch disasters. whether it is a natural or man made disaster people just can't seem to take their eyes off it. So this means big dollars for the networks.

Oh of course...I should have figured that out.

Just when you thought you knew all the abbreviations.

Oh, in that case I'd say it's probably a little of both. People have their
favorite stations and maybe if the telethon was only on one, many people
          wouldn't watch it.

Also, maybe the other networks figured that if they didn't air it, they'd
lose market share for that evening.

I think business entered into this as well.

But yeah, not getting involved in such a noble cause would kind of make
          you look like a Scrooge.

Ultimately, I don't think we're ever really going to know why the networks
          did what they did.

A lot of those channels are now owned by the same corporations. Those which didn't aire the pc show at the time are probably owned by different corporations or might still be free press (LOL on TV, ya that's gonna happen).

Well, it was the same in Canada...all 3 major networks up here were running the Canadian version but only for one hour and it was on an hour earlier....funny thing was I enjoyed watching it and followed it up by watching the U.S. version...liked both programs so much more than the crap reality shows that seem to flood the air waves these days. I didn't donate through the tv programming as I had already sent what I could previously but I did enjoy watching them.

what happened to haiti is prolly best thing that happened to them in a looong time.
they were over populated and food lack and job lack was a increasing problem.
200000 less at least to feed and give a job to.
the whole world is looking at them and they have plenty of job rebuilding stuffz.
      its the way nature works
so can i say i care...?
nope sorry i cant say i do.
a similar quake in china and india and the worlds resources would grow nicely
heck why not a few in the states and central eu to.
Now you see why i rarley open my mouth when ppl die or suffer.

nah..all this will do is give a bunch of crap to haiti that they will run out of.

This is like the old saying 'give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime' Over half the haitian population is illiterate, thats why you cant 'teach' them to 'fish'.

Look at their first reaction in this crisis. Was it 'how can we rebuild our country'? Nope..it was 'where's the first boat to America'. Some countries always have and always will be in need of being taken care of because they can't do it on their own.

There are comments being made on newscasts now that are political quotes and media conjecture about the US being responsible for rebuilding Haiti "bigger and better".

Yet when a couple people suggested sending the thousands of trailers and cottages used for temporary shelter after Katrina - it was shouted down by some as "not good enough".

That's funny - it was good enough for us following the hurricane....

There are acres and acres filled with vacant trailers and cottages that will never be used again - because they are not being maintained. We are paying 50x the going rate to rent land to store these buildings.

Four walls, a roof, beds, windows to keep flies out. The much reported formaldehyde problem was limited to a small percentage of the trailers and the main problem was they were not aired out as people were told to do. Instead A/C was running 24/7. Testing on trailers here found very few problems.

Take out the A/C - change wiring connections if necessary - and ship those to Haiti. That would be a great solution for the housing problem that wouldn't require us to borrow money to give away.

I don't understand why those housing units aren't used for low cost housing but they aren't going to be. At least we could do something with them and in many cases they would be far better than what some in Hait were living in before the quake.

But that would be too simple and, after all, those 2 bedroom cottages with a kitchen, bathroom and front porch aren't good enough.

If i remember correctly..the reasons we didnt use the trailers was because of fermaldahyde(sp?) fumes from paint that was used. And we didnt use the cottages because they were 'too nice' and they were afraid that those in N.O would never move out of them even though they were only to be temporary shelter.

The trailers were then opened up to air them out, and were left open during a couple storms and their issue went from toxic fumes to mold because leaving them open allowed water to get into them. So basically most of them are useless

There were also tons of supplies sent to N.O. that were put in a warehouse, and somehow someone in FEMA didnt know there were still people that were in a bad way in N.O. (how the hell do you not know something like this if you're in FEMA?) and all those supplies (basic stuff, silverware, plates, coffee makers, coffee, just stuff to get people going) was passed out to various state agencies including prisons and police agencies.
