This can cover the fake reality shows and/or talent shows.

The fake reality shows are mostly contrived crap.

The same goes for the American Version of the the singing Idols shows.
I can't comment on the UK version as I have never watched it.

Ok now, lets rumble!

I really don't see any merit to reality shows. They just promote lethargy. If i want reality, all i have to do is turn the tv off.

talent shows are ok i suppose, they do give a platform to talented people who otherwise would probably never be discovered.

Well, The TV Can't Be Just On.. There Has To Be Something On It, right?

    Michael,
    I actually agree with you.
America's got talent has had some great acts on.
While it isn't really an amature talent show (which in all fairness,it never claims to be) it does let us see a lot of different talent we otherwise wouldn't.

On the other hand , and I know a lot will compleltely disagree with me, I have found 99% of the "talent" found for the American Idol shows are bland manufactured people that really think being a singer really means putting on a broadway musical number for every song instead of relying on talent to make them a star.

    Sumit:
If there actually has to be "something" on, I have an idea. Let's put something of "quality" on it!

Well it just seems to me that a lot of the Idol 'talent' isnt really about talent, but product viability.

They will take someone who is marginally talented over someone that is excessively talented..if the marginal person looks good on cd covers and car commercials.

You audition a million people and one talented guy pops up.. Isn't this how it always works?

Not all shows would be top quality. If that was the case you'd be watching Baywatch reruns all day. (and perhaps Bones)

I mean, they have to fill the time slot somehow. Also, any show is better than the Tele Shopping ads that are shown here in the night.

Besides, you can't deny that people like Daughtry, Carrie Underwood aren't talented.

I remember the days when to become famous you actually had to DO something of note, such as climb Mt Everest, walk on the moon, find a cure for a disease, etc..

Now you have to be photogenic and allow yourself to be (potentially) humiliated on TV.

I would much rather watch a "talent" show where the entrants had to write/compose their own songs. Then we would see some REAL talent (or not). As far as impersonating what has been done many times before... yawn.

Britney Spears did a concert tour of Australia late last year and was much criticised for miming the whole show. What do people expect when one of the "selling points" on the ads for the show mentioned "Britney does 28 (or something) costume changes".

WTF has that got to do with anything?

Sorry Kim you've got competition for the "Cranky Old Man" title.

So what? This gives the little guy a chance. I mean, not everyone can do all that stuff.

Now, I'm not supporting the Kardashians but if it weren't for shows like these, more than half of the 'really' talented people wouldn't come up. Jennifer Aniston went big, only after F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Now, almost every adult I know hates the show.

exactly...not everyone can do that stuff..thats why the people that do things special are celebrated. When we start celebrating the mundane, then nobody is special.

We do this to make those that are usless not feel so bad

          BINGO!

All my kids are grown now,but over the past 20 years I have gone to more than I can count shows, events, award ceremonies, plays, contest, etc, etc.

Parents now seem to think that every child is THE next big thing.
A childs name is called, he gets a standing ocation to thunderous applause.
He farts, he gets a standing ovation to thunderous applause.

This not only give the child an over exagerrated self esteem that he doesn't deserve, but detracts away from thise that are really worthy.

And I am sorry, but every child is NOT exceptional. Every child does not deserve to be applauded.

I completely agree. People need to get over this thought process that their child is some special unique snowflake that can be the next president of the planet. It just doesnt work out that way.

When i went to school back in ye olden times...when you went from like third to 4th or 7th to 8th grade, it was no big deal. You just went home for the summer and came back. Now there is a 'graduation' ceremony, every kid has pictures taken, they are given rewards for 'best shoe tying' or 'least boogers eaten' or some other ridiculous garbage.

And then mom and dad wonder why these kids come out of high school expecting a high paying job when they have no education or wont get off their a$$es to do any job that they feel is beneath them...which is pretty much every job short of rock star or brain surgeon.

What turns me off the X-factor type shows, is just the sheer cynical manipulation on the part of the producers. They come up with a shortlist of suitable songs at the start, carefully time the series finale to coincide with a Christmas release, then set about deciding on the most popular "vehicle" for that song.

That the winning singer may have talent is secondary to whether there's a sellable "story".

In other words, it's just like the music business, but in that industry's even more machiavellian early years.

I just wish these shows didn't masquerade as egalitarian talent contests. Or pretend that they had anything to do with music.

However, there's definitely a place for true talent shows - check out the clip that KJ just posted in this thread:

              You'll be astounded.

                  Dear MissTerraK,
I really doubt that Mr Simon is more cranky than some of us.
You have to remember that we are guests on this forum so some of us cannot release our full crankiness!
And if I had Simons money I would feel less cautious about being cranky.

I love reality shows and most of what I watch is reality...ESPN, sports, History Channel, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, news....Nothing beats reality.

Seriously, I admit I like watching one "reality" show, it's the one about the Repo guys. Now that's a job with some drama.
