Lottery Winner Found Murdered in Florida

I don't play the lottery (because I don't have that mindset) but this is kind of scary, "The body of a former truck driver's assistant who won $17m in a lottery in 2006 has been found buried under a concrete slab in a backyard in Florida." More at BBC News.

He also told his brother that his lottery winnings "ruined his life." I'm still on the fence if it was really the money that ruined his life with all due respect to him.

Believe him. I saw a report on the unhappiest people in the US and they are the mega-lottery winners. Their friends and family all change and just want money and more than half of the winners file for bankruptcy within 3 years.

it can change one's life for good or for worst...especially when lots of people around you know that you have lots of money, they thinking of how to make money out of you and sometimes put your life in danger.

I think this really is about your mindset how you view money.
After all there are Warriors here who are millionaires I don't hear them saying money has ruined my life!
Perhaps the sudden change of life and perspective of those around you can either ruin you if you don't have your feet on the ground or help you learn to enjoy the abundance.
I'm inclined to agree with Stumblerum he could have been sensible hired a bodyguard, also an Accountant to help him be prudent with the money.
Although thinking that my life would be in danger is Not the first thing I think of when having a lot of money. I suppose that depends on what company he has been keeping.

Yeah but there's more to this story. I've been watching this because its not that far from my house.

This guy won 30 mil, took a 17mil payout.

first off he had a pissed of coworker over the ticket bad enough that there was a lawsuit.

Then there is a female involved, and it looks like most of the evidence is pointing to her in this killing.

Its not like he just got the money and lost his mind, he got the money and the scandalous individuals that attatched themselves to him decided to kill him off.

The concrete slabe he was found under was at the house of the boyfriend of the female involved. Its a really nice house and was paid off by the lottery winner by check.

There's a big difference between earning money and being given money. If people were good with their money, they probably wouldn't be spending it on lottery tickets. If someone is bad with money, giving them $17 million doesn't change this, only makes things worse.

And the problems arise from friends and family wanting their money. This doesn't seem to happen as much when the money is earned.

It really isn't the just the winner that changes, it's everyone around the winner. Instead of a brother saying "let's go to a movie", now he's asking for $100,000 for a business. Mom doesnt' call to invite him over for lunch, but to ask for a new car.

What I don't understand is when the winnings break up families - a mother and son in court over a lottery ticket was the most ridiculous thing.\

Neither one was willing to divide the millions - but wanted it all. How stupid is that.

There have been some very smart lotto winners, too. I personally know a man who won over ten million and he enjoys life to the fullest, gives quite a bit to favorite charities, helped out family by setting up accounts that provide a reasonable (not luxurious) income for family members - and doesn't live on the principle but only on investments and interest.

But then - he knew how to handle money before he became a lottery winner.

The first thing i would do if i won the lottery is toss my cellphone. If i want to call you, i have your number. Next, i'd head to my mom's place and we would go pick her out a house, then a car and put some money in the bank for her. Take care of my neice's college and a handful of my buddies.

I'd put most in the bank, but i would have like 15k cashed out in a duffle bag. I'd get a fake 70's porn star mustache and a pair of mirrored sunglasses and go on a spending spree.

Yeah, you get all the golddiggers around you coming to you trying to get you to give them money. Scammers and con artists will flood your life. That is why you should hide the fact that you have any money by moving away and living a low profile life, that way no one would ever know. At least you would hope no one would know.
