Some days I don't even have to wonder why I never want to go to Los Angeles!

Omg I don't think I've seen this many roads ever in my life! But then again, the furthest I've been is Australia. I can't wait to go to LA now

You could be lost on that thing for 5 years.

Well, may not you - but I would be.

When I moved to Atlanta I used to take off in the car every day and drive in one direction or another. I'd find all sorts of places I'd read about or heard of on the news. When I got ready to go home, I'd stop somewhere and ask for directions back to Roswell. Worked for me and I learned my around that city quickly.

I'd never find a place in LA to ask for directions

I am only surprised someone was able to shoot a picture that doesn't show the smog. They must have photoshopped it out? You can see the yellow cloud starting early in the morning.

I spent a day there once and I got conjunctivitis - My eyes were as red as tomatoes.

    Whatta mess.

Actually, I haven't seen a significant amount of smog there for a while. There used to be NO standards, and public vehicles were all gas/diesel, and in POOR condition. NOW, they have LOTS of standards, and a lot of alternative vehicles.

That's actually a pretty organized monster - even though a monster. They did much better than the guys that planned that snarl that goes through Denver. I drove that one several times when I lived in CO - but went back a couple of years ago and freaked. I just got in the center lane and got the heck out of that town - it had turned into such a gigantic cluster of madness that I didn't even want to stop. An hour and a half to drive through it at 60! Worse - I could smell it a half hour before I got there!

All seeing crap like that does for me is want to legislate forced sterilization of 90% of our population. When places get that crowded it's time to stop and ask ourselves WTF exactly we are thinking.

Now THIS is a mountain...Longs Peak.

I see it when I look at my front window, unless it's snowing on the mountain, which is usual this time of year.

Actually, Longs Peak is about 14,250.

I'll probably go to the top once Trail Ridge Road opens, sometime after Memorial Day, and drive up.

Trail Ridge Road was once the highest paved road in the World. I don't think it is any more though, but it's still "up there". On the other side of Longs Peak is Grand Lake...As the "crow flies", Grand Lake is about 7 miles from where I live...But it's a 54 mile drive because of all the "switchbacks" to get over the mountain...(Assuming the road is open, and it's only open a few months a year due to weather.)

Every sping thaw we'll find a few flatlanders that weren't paying attention to the road and took the "quick way" down. Have to wait until the snow melts before we can find them. LOL

This time of year I can rarely see it, even though it's only a few miles away...It's always snowing up there and is usually covered with dark gray clouds.

If anyone's interested, this pic from wikikpedia was taken less than a mile from where I live...If you follow the mountain to the very left of the picture, you can kind of see a snow-covered mountain in the background, that's the bottom corner of Longs Peak.

PS...I swear the elk around here come to a street and look both ways before crossing, they're so conditioned to people and traffic.

Agreed. But we have to remember that the Sierra is just a baby mountain range and has many years left to grow in their big brothers shadow!

Wow Kurt - Longs is a 14er? Didn't FEEL that high. I think Evans or Pike's Peak is now the highest road. I climbed Pikes - but Drove Evans. Princeton and Antero I climbed. Somehow I remembered that James Peak and Long's were the same size.

Grand Lake is where I used to spend 4th of July every year. I miss that place, too. Wonderful 4ths.

      Hey Sal and All,

I need a nap...Trail Ridge Road goes over Mt Evans, not Longs Peak...They're both about the same altitude and just a few miles from me. Mt Evans is probably even more impressive than Longs Peak.

I used to live in Grand Lake when I was younger, early 20s. It's amazing how much worse the winters are on that side of the divide. Grand Lake may get 2 feet of snow and we'll barely get an inch or two sometimes on this side of the mountain.

      Mt Evans:

Here's a shot of Trail Ridge Road going over Mt. Evans:

Here's a pic in Rocky Mountain Nat. Park, which is also in the "neighborhood":

Kurt - Evans seems twice the size of Longs just because of the way it ascends. That's why I never tried to hike it. I lived right down the road from that one about 12 miles
Grand Lake isn't quite as bad as Frazier just south of it. They call the the Nation's ice box for a reason. There are other places that are worse, of course, but if you are used to Colorado it's a shocker how the temps drop when you drive through Frazier.

There's a place in ID that looks just like that stretch from Frazier to Grand Lake - trying to get positioned to be able to live up there - getting a Jeep tomorrow, so that's one step toward it. I'd love to be back in CO - but it's gotten so freaking expensive I'd never afford it on my own. That's okay though because I love the politicians we have here in Idaho right now and love the land so I'll stick around for awhile other than visits elsewhere.

I used to live in Frazier, too, when I was younger. Had to hitchhike to work at Winter Park.

Frazier Cold? LOL....I only lived there one winter, but the coldest I saw was -45F. People have to "plug in" their cars so they don't freeze...It's much nicer on this side of Mt. Evans.

Approximate location? I let a pending ski resort on a mountain I could see out my dining room window chase me out of Northern California and now I can't find anywhere else like that that I can afford!

And now the ski resort has run out of money and will be years in future! I guess grass is not always greener. NE Oregon...Sawtooth Mts around Stanley and area north of Spokane (maybe even Priest River) are attractive with just a few more $$$ in our jeans.

Nothing really wrong with S. Oregon for most but way too many people and rain here for a snow-freak!
