I think the first unease that many people have about bats is rabies! If you are bitten by a bat, or if saliva from a bat gets into your eyes, nose or mouth, seek medical attention immediately!!!
If possible, the bat should be captured and sent to a laboratory for testing! That if can catch it before it attacks you. lol

Unless of course, it's a sparkly vegan vampire, in which case never mind >

I actually lived in a home that once had bats in the attic! Let's see! RODENTS! Could be diseased! COULD be vampires(vampire bats). Other wise, FORGET IT! They can actually be quite small, and maybe even harmless.

Yes I did - why do you ask?

Bats = baseball bats = FLYING bats = FEAR.

FYI...I too did look at the photo and was also having a little fun.

After all, I could have meant that my family likes to carry around bats with
        them.

        Of either kind.

          Pat,

You should have left your post intact.

It was the only thing that gave this entire thread anything worth reading...

Thank you KJ. I told you that you are the best, and you know I just happen to have saved it. LOL! hehehehe

Here we go again: The Pat Cave

This reminds me of one of the most harrowing periods in my entire life. I just have to go there again and relive it with you all.

I fell asleep watching 'Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me' - if you ever saw the David Lynch movie, it has lots of violence and terror. It has the color and music to go with terrifying moments.

Exactly at midnight something woke me up - wasn't sure what - right in the middle of a murder scene - red - fiddles, etc. I laid my head back down and felt a light 'konk' on the head and heard wings flapping.

OmiGod I thought, a bird is in here. Several more times I was konked and had my head under the covers. If I turned on the light nothing. If I turned out the light konk. (this should have been a clue but wasn't until after the fact - bats are blind but they trip in the dark.)

OK long story short it was a bat. There is a vent in the back of the building for the fireplace which is set into the space in the wall. There is (WAS) an opening where they were getting in to this apartment through there.

Bird or whatever I eventually got up and opened up the front and back doors and (lights on) didn't see anything so I figured the 'bird' split. Went back to bed.

Next morning I got up looking for droppings and I have some upholstered black dining room chairs. I noticed a wing sticking out of the throw pillow on it. OMIGOD - so I poked it (brilliant idea) and he expanded the wing to inform me he was no bird, but a freaking bat.

I wheeled the chair (with my coat over my head) out the front door and slammed it. About 5 minutes later I went out gingerly to check. He was hovering over my entrance way as if he waited to say goodbye - and yes he seemed to smile and flew away. (I am certifiable but I think he was saying thank you for not killing me).

End of story? No. Still didn't know how they were getting in at this point. Happened 2 more times and the other ones were not as willing to leave but did manage to get them out and then put a grating on the areas where they had come to know my apartment as the 'Pat Cave'.

End of story? Oh no - during the time we had started to figure the fireplace we had only fixed the grate on the back of the building (not the one in the front that leads into the room) - they busted it and came in again.

End of story? No. during that time I had closed the flue or whatever you call the part that lets the smoke out. The next time I lit the fire well the Pat Cave was full of smoke -

End of story? (after repainting living room) --->> Yes.

Moral of story. Bats are cool. They don't bite and they EAT MOSQUITOES that carry encephalitis or whatever. Rather have a bat anyday. (albeit sans rabies)

They sure are ugly up close though - they have a face only a mother could love.

    p.s. great picture KJ!

    Hey Pat...

I agree with KJ, You should of kept your post...Jared's comments were about the entire thread and no one commenting on the baseball bat, but no one's post in particular.

I don't worry half about diseases that a little bat might have as I do about those carried by balls.

That pic is only part of a bat...now that would be scary.

Yes I do believe they see us as a threat Jared.

Why? Because I was a harmless object sleeping in my bed and he repeatedly bombed me - He would fly all around the entire L-shaped room and each trip around swooped down to peck at me or whatever the hell he was doing.

Maybe just territorial - one too many bats in the house. (they say I am quite batty - I don't wonder why).

They are little bitty things - I think it was a 'fruit bat' (not gay, they eat fruit)

... and their wings fold all up 2 or 3 ways - when they are expanded they are way bigger though - like over a foot in width.

(How tiny when collapsed? The third one was found in the mini-blinds. He was easy - just remove the mini-blinds and put them outside and woosh.) Maybe he was a baby.

Bats are cute. I'd like some pet bats. Especially the lil ones. The poor things are horribly discriminated against.
