I have a online DVD rental subscription, and was wondering if its ok to rent HD versions of films without having a HD player. Would the film still run on my DVD player or my PC?

It should still run, but what would be the point of renting hd if you cant play it. Unless you're more interested in pirating

That depends on what you mean by "HD".

There was an actual HD-DVD format, for example. You can't play that in a normal player, but an awful lot of HD-DVD discs were dual-sided with common garden-variety DVD on the other side.

And there is Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray needs a special player, too. It is an HD DVD format. Notice there is no hyphen, because HD-DVD is a whole different thing. See above.

There are also regular garden variety DVDs which contain HD video. These work just fine in any DVD player.

Can you shed a little more light on what your video rental site says about the disc?

What CDarklock has said is true, The usual videos which you find can be played on any player, yes the quality would differ though.
