It was 8.8 from what I heard. We haven't even recovered from the Haiti quake and now this. I wonder if this global warming deserves some looking into.

There is even a tsunami warning for Hawaii.

A lot of earthquakes. Haiti, Japan, Chile. Then all the tsunami warnings.

The quake was 8.8 and historically that subduction zone produces massive tsunamis - we got lucky this time. There were also over 30 5 mag quakes and eight 6 mag quakes - one in Argentina.
On the 26th a 7 mag quake hit off the coast of Japan and a tsunami was watched for but did not manifest.

Right now the lithosphere is shifting and there have been masses of quakes globally at 10 km depth (same as Haiti) and now trending to 35 km depth.
If you figure that a 6 mag quake at 10 kms will kill and a 7 at 300km depths sometimes will barely be felt, you can understand what we are looking at with all the shallow quakes. Next one that is overdue is the Cascadia Zone which traditionally produces 9 mag quakes and massively devastating tsunamis.

If you want to keep your pulse on quakes - I am a tracker and you can find several Earth Watch features on my site in my sig at "get a life". The newsletter has Earth Issue discussions, and quake discussion - in my forum I do daily tracking, reported a couple of times a week (today is going to be hell to record), and there is an earth watch section in the main menu which studied warming -- and which leaves us now able to say "told ya so". LOL.

Come on over any time you want to find out what's shakin' - oh - there's a free three year report there, too, you can grab a copy just by clicking.

Interesting to note the very limited damage and low casualty rate, despite it being somewhere between 500 to 1,000 times more powerful than the Haiti quake.

It certainly gives testament to the value of strong building regulations in quake-prone areas.

Yeah, it was one big earthquake but it seems to have done less damage than what was done in Haiti. I guess that is a good thing, but still tough for the people of Chile.
