Interesting!

His official website is at . Carlos Slim Helú ..

In personal and business style he seems to be the anti-Trump. Both look to buy undervalued, overlooked, distressed assets and fix them up. But for Slim, the end result is cardboard-plated for everyday people and profitable, not gold-plated and super-expensive. His pragmatic approach is similar to Buffet's. He's done a lot of philanthropy.

The Time profile Carlos Slim's Embarrassment of Riches - TIME reports on allegations of monopolistic practices in Slim's businesses. His New York Times investment, and the lack of coverage in the Times of a major business lawsuit, have also brought controversy.

I'm going to learn more about him and his business philosophy!

You also have to realize that he doesnt donate to the extent that Gates and Warren do.

Amazing...

Just goes to show that your background, and country of origin really doesn't matter. It's your mindset, strategy, and execution.

This is a repeat. He was number one a couple of years ago. I guess he didn't like being bumped down.

I think this is because Bill Gates and Warren Buffett donate a lot of their money to charity.

I am underwhelmed as well. Bill Gates had already given away more than a third of his fortune. Whereas Carlos Slim took a swipe at Bill Gates by implying that the best way to do charity is to build up profitable businesses.

Warren Buffet lost nearly 50% of his wealth last year because the share price fell in berkshire hathaway. Of course over the past year it has increased, but he has also heavily invested in several companies for the future.

And he's currently making very large butt-loads of money.

One thing I found disappointing, I looked on that list of all the world's billionaires, but I couldn't find my name...

I think that the ranking of billionares is rather a subjective one. Plenty of people would say that its not (he/she with the most money wins). But depending upon ones holdings (tech, medical, real-estate, etc.) a persons portfolio could increase or diminish rather substantially. Therefore people who were a bit further down on the list due to the increased valuation of a particular segement of a portfolio which may have been depressed before may cause a jump in thier ranking. which is not to say that they are or are not better business people. Just variations in portfolio returns. Charitable giving, I agree also makes a difference

Secondarily not to cast dispersions on the new #1. But other countries have a greater propensity for corruption, both in the private and public sectors which can tip the playing field in your favor. Can that lead to greater profits across the board.....?

So you're saying if an entrepreneur is located in a country that is rife with corruption, then said entrepreneur has a natural advantage? Does this mean I have to move to Vietnam?

You are absolutely right. It's all depends on the individual
