A degree no, an education yes.
How you get that education may or may not have anything to do with college.

I'm almost finished a degree in International Business and don't find what I've learnt all that valuable. My future employer however might see it differently.

I had a professor in college talk me out of getting a degree once.
I was going for a degree in Recreational Land Management with a Turf grass understudy, I already had a degree in Culinary Arts. One day my woody plants prof. and I where talking about what I wanted while in school. I told him I wanted to learn about plants. He asked me what was more important when I was cooking, the degree or knowing how to cook and run a kitchen.
From there I dropped all the social science classes I needed for the degree and just took plant science courses until I left 3 1/2 semesters in do to personal reasons.
Got an incredible education, much better then if I got the degree.

The School Of Life still provides the best education.

I read somewhere that one of the world's major financial institutions (Citigroup I think, but don't quote me on that), hires people with MBA's. For the first year they are employed they are untaught (is that a word) everything they learnt during their MBA, just so they can actually function in the real world.

That could be an urban legend, but to me it sounds just silly enough to be true.

My own experience is that a degree is no guarantee of intelligence, it only means someone passed exams in a certain field.

I'm sure we've all met people with impressive qualifications who are dumb as doorknobs.

On the other side of the coin we've alll met high school dropouts who are as sharp as tacks.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

I do not think that you need a degree even though I have a bachlor's and it did not help me with a job. I do how ever think that you do need education and whatever you plan on doing. And to have a team of advisors. Also a mentor or mentors

That's why I added this line.
"How you get that education may or may not have anything to do with college."
Even though I've been to college twice, I made the mistake of telling one of the classes I was in what I really thought of college.
Like I told them, "College is for people who are to stupid to get a real job".

I didn't get a college degree til I was in my forties, and when I did, I did it for me, and not for anyone or anything else. I'm glad I did.

Both times I went to college I felt that way Kim.
Honestly if I could choose all the courses like I did when I was in Plant Science and could afford it, I'd be a professional full time student.
When you are into what you are learning, college is a great experience and place to be.

The typical answer to this question is no. But I would go even further and say that a degree is the biggest scam of the last 20 years. Young graduates are paying hundreds of dollars each month in student loans with nothing to show for it. The education offered at many of these schools is the same thing you can get from books at a public library.

Unless you can go to university for free, don't go.

Yeah, but what you can't get from a library is the degree itself. If it comes down to you and me for the same job, I have a degree in hand from an accredited school and you have a library card ..guess who is getting a job

Students who think they will come out of college and get their dream job get smacked in the face with reality. Regardless of what MTV tells you, you dont start at the top, you get crap jobs and work your way up.

Why would you bust your butt and get in debt when you can simply create your own business ?

If it were that 'simple' everyone would do it. Some people, many on this forum, dont have the ability.
