Internet Marketers That Have Moved Abroad

Hi,

I'm looking for suggestions on where to move. At the moment I'm in England - and I've really had enough (rained all day today). In the past I've ran my Internet businesses from Goa, India and Koh Lanta, Thailand. Great weather, and a very low cost of living

Ideally I'm looking for an area where there is a community of people that make money online. I know it's hard to find but I also know there are places. Of course, I would also like it to be cheap!

I lived in Ibiza for a few months last year and came back in debt

So, anyone have any suggestions?

I don't know that there is necessarily any specific area that has a bunch of people that make money online. I mean they are spread out all over the place. If there is I don't know about it.

I mean you can move somewhere near where a lot of internet marketing seminars are held and whatnot, that would probably be your best bet.

How about China this time? Although there are obviously a few internet restrictions in place if you were to go there...

I would say a place like Hong Kong. Modern city and it's China, yes, but still has it's own government so no worried about those kinds of issues. Cheaper to live than England, too. Also, you could try Singapore which is very modern, cheaper than England (in some ways, not to own a car!), and I've noticed many warrior forum members on here are from Singapore.

Hong Kong would be awesome but is it sunny? Excuse my ignorance if it is! I honestly have no idea!

I read International Living Magazine occasionally and Costa Rica is always mentioned. I've heard property is cheap to rent and buy. Definitely one I'm considering. Thank you.

I live in Hong Kong and we just had a very damp cold day (max 14 celsius) with a continuous drizzle. (Sounds familiar).

        Hong Kong Observatory

Mind you, it is not normally as bad as this in April although we do have typhoons to contend with in the Summer. There is also smog all year round as well. To make things more complicated, property prices and rents are probably the most expensive in the world now, even more than London. The only thing going is that you may not need a visa to live and work here.

Singapore may be sunny all year round but it is not cheap either. Rents may be cheaper but other stuff is more expensive than Hong Kong. You will find it very expensive to run a car in either Singapore or Hong Kong.

While Hong Kong is part of China it doesn't have the same internet restrictions as the mainland.

I visit there 2 - 4 times a year and spend time in the downtown area - personally I wouldn't call it sunny. It does have sunny days and is beautiful place when it does but due to pollution it is grey most of the time. The cost of living there is high for Asia but I don't know how it compares to England.

I'd look at Malaysia or the Philippines - great cities and great beaches depending on where you go.

Yes Singapore has lots of internet marketers - I have made friends with some. It is a beautiful clean city but if you want to own a car there - there are a lot of restrictions. I think Thailand would be the place to be. Never been to Costa Rica so don't know what that is like.

Really comes down to what YOU want.

I'm from Costa Rica and moved abroad to the USA. If anyone has any specific questions about Costa Rica let me know.

I also have a line e-books about Costa Rica:

        Costa Rica eBooks

And my brother has a ton of free information about moving to Costa Rica. He's an attorney based in Escazu.

        costaricalaw.com - Home

The beaches are great. The people are great. It's not as expensive as living in the USA. But make sure you cover all your bases. And you have to have patience to live in Costa Rica. A lot of Americans and Brits don't make it. Don't expect things to move as quick as they do here. And if you move there please adapt to the Costa Rica way of life not the other way around.

I've visited Thailand 3 times and I love it there. But obviously I'm biased towards my country Costa Rica.

    Hey Steve,

I'm not sure if you are aware but there are currently a LOT of people who are already doing exactly what you mention or are interested in living abroad whilst running a business and a whole bunch of them gather together through online communities under the umbrella terms of Digital Nomads or Location Independent Professionals.
Just run an online search and I'm sure you will find a ton of interesting information and opions. Feel free to message me and I can hook you up with a few great free resources to help you with your decisions.

    Good Luck!

Cheers Dan, I've heard of 'nomadic lifestyle' but not 'location independent professionals', so I'll research that.

One problem I had with India was the Internet, you have to attach this Mobile Internet card to your laptop then load it up with minutes (which cost nothing at all), but the Internet was so slow - almost like the old days of dial up. I could sit on the beach with the laptop though

    Hi,

I had this same dilema a few years ago.

I lived in Singapore for a few months and almost never came back.

It's a really nice place, the weather is humid which some people don't like (I don't mind it) and there are lots of IMers.

I started several IM get togethers while I was there and they also have IM seminars, so I met a bunch of IM friends from UK and US while I was there too.

I'm still tempted to go back. I tried living in the US for much of last year but came back to the UK and am now thinking again about whether to stay or go somewhere else.

Good luck with your plans whatever you decide to do.

I'm headed to Nicaragua this fall to check into just this very thing. Looking for a place outside the States to land once the craziness gets past my tolerance point (and it's getting real close as I type this). Land is cheap, oceanfront properties are available, and there is a rapidly expanding expat commmunity springing up. Sunny and warm most of the time, and a short plane flight back to the states if I absolutely need to come back for anything.

I live here in Colombia, on the Caribbean Coast. This is my 4th year now and I love it. It's definitely NOT for everybody, but the optimum health, wealth and personal freedom I've gained versus living stateside far outweigh the risks.

As far as your question, I'd take a slightly different approach. Instead of asking others, ask yourself. Who better than to provide you with that answer, than YOU? (Not being cheeky, because as you can see, people's tastes can be as different as night and day),

Sounds like a lot of work, I'm sure but it's easy and fun once you do the proper due diligence. And when I say 'due diligence' I mean having the right knowledge and in right sequence.

I teach people how to move overseas in a long-term, sustainable way. Let me know if you have further questions...

Some good suggestions everyone. But I see many would suit people without children.

However, what if you have young children?

Can anyone suggest anywhere friendly, safe, warm, with decent education for children and a reasonable cost of living?

Time for a change. The UK is usually too damp and miserable, the USA is just as nutty as the UK and not ideal for young kids.

    Suggestions please...

      Hi Steve,
Well I'm from the UK but as you can see moved to Lanzarote (about 4 months ago now!). I love it here. We had 1 really bad week in february with lots of rain..other than that we probably had another 3/4 days worth during winter and no rain for last 6 weeks. Cold days are mid 60's although most days in winter reach 70f. Nights feel cool to me now but are usually no colder than high 50's. Some people get bored with the lack of season's here, red tape and the laid back lifestyle but it works for me. I know of half a dozen IM/IT guys/girls over here.
Good luck in your search. I shall be doing more travelling but I've found a base here I believe.

      That's a great question.

I have a 10 y.o. and I can tell you that children are very resilient, often times more than adults when i comes to moving overseas. They tend to adapt easier as their minds are open and soak up everything like sponges.
Not saying everything will come up roses, but there are expats in places you'd never imagine with children.

As I stated earlier, it really does depend on the individual or family as to where they'd like to go. Different likes and dislikes, preferences in climate/culture/cuisine, personal idiosyncrasies, medical/business/political infrastructure, educational goals, etc. There are a LOT of factors involved so you'd definitely want to invest in your own due diligence.

Hmmm...this topic's more popular here than I imagined. Perhaps a WSO is in order?

Singapore is good. Internet is cheap (you can Google the internet providers SingTel, M1 and Starhub for the rates) and standard of living is world class. Education is superb, healthcare is wonderful and its a safe and clean country. Cons is that cars are terribly expensive... and housing too. Weather sucks too for its frequent thunderstorms and humidity like some Warriors have pointed out.

I have lived in Australia before and I like it for its good standard of living and friendly people.

Wow I am really shocked that Alabama hasn't been mentioned yet. Not only is the cost of living low here but it's even made lower by the fact that you don't have to wear shoes much. We sure don't!

We also have new fast internet speeds of 25-30 megs per second and usually our networks are not real congested because most of us still refuse to use a pc as we can't find the word ya'll on it.

Not only is Alabama close to the ocean but due to heavy rains now every other day since september of last year every homeowner in the state has waterfront property. Owning a vehicle is not expensive at all as most of us have opted for a nice sturdy ark to get in and out of our driveways recently.

Recreation wise there is not much to do here because we are in the middle of the bible belt so no casinos in the state. You can call our governor's office though and members of his cabinet can tell you the best paying casinos in neighboring states and may even be able to hook you up with some super discounts!

You mentioned you were looking for people into IM? I dunno where he is but if you give me more info me and the fellers can help you look for im! We don't need any fancy meetins about im either when we find im we'll fire one loud shot with the rifle.

I know this sounds like the absolute best place on earth so for everyone who would like to know more about it please call 1-800-ALABAMA or go to www.liveinbama.org for more info but please pace yourselves and don't everyone rush at one time!

    Hi,

The whole world is a community these days... I'd just go where you enjoy the beaches and day to day life the best.

You may find that the biggest money making communities are in places where people are desparate to leave... so they are desparately making money in order to move to where you are...

Come back to Thailand buddy... I am in Phuket right now (Kata Bay) looking out over the beach 30ft up a cliff.

Getting a good enough connection with the old Edge modem and rent at 8,000 baht per month ($247). The rooms are big and its balcony is a doozy, the old crone who owns it is letting me install ADSL so should have a fat connection too soon.

For me its always Thailand at the top spot as I am married to a Thai and speaka'de'lingo well enough.

How was Koh Lanta in terms of rental rates and internet speed?

    Hi Steve,

I'm from Leeds originally, moved all over Canada and now settled (sort of) in Ontario.
I know many people wanting to leave the UK and I would 1000% recommend it. I had a friend leave at the same time and move to NZ and she loves it there. In retrospect NZ might have been a better choice for me.

Trailfinders in the UK do dirt cheap round the world tickets. Probably not as cheap as they used to be but I went round the wold a few years back for 800 quid. If you can take a few months off buy a ticket and check the world out.

As for immigration everywhere is tightening up and even places with points systems are hard to get into. Although I hear NZ is in need of hair dressers.

If you meet a girl on your travels in your favoured destination and you can persuade her to live with you for a year you can get into that country as common law man/wife. That's how my immigration to Canada worked. But you have to arrange the immigration outside of your destination country. So you'd have to fly back to Europe to make your application.

But in the end its worth it. Oh and watch out for culture shock. It took about 4 years before I stopped wanting to move back to the UK. And I hear thats about the average time.

    Cheers
