As most of you already know...

This always gives me a little chuckle.

We're sitting on a forum with a six-figure membership. At any given time, there are around 2500 to 4000 people browsing the forum. And yet some folks up in the main forum -- often newcomers to the forum who just started posting a week ago -- say something like this...

"As most of you already know from my other thread, blah blah blah."

Maybe you could say that down here in the basement where there are fewer people reading posts -- especially if you're a well-known regular down here.

But saying it up in the main forum... especially if you're new to the forum?

Now that's funny.

Cheers,
Becky

Saying it at ANY time, no matter who you are doesn't make a lot of sense. At least I never understood it.

If your new post is so dependent on your older post, then add your new post to the older one. If your older post has outgrown its "shelf life" and you think a new post will drum up interest in the older one, then you need to re-examine your older post, or better yet, just let it go.

Other than that, it just makes sense to have enough information in your post for people to make replies without having to click anything else.

That includes links to news stories, older posts, and so on.

You can augment your OPs with those things, but not to the point of responses being dependent upon them.

    All the best,
    Michael

    Hi Michael,

Excellent point. That's very true -- your posts shouldn't be dependent on each other. So as you said, it never makes sense for folks to do that.

I just find it funny that people say "as most of you already know" on a forum with a six-figure membership.

    Either they:

    1. Forget the forum is bigger than the 12 people who answered their last post.
    2. They're referring to the 12 people who answered their last post.
    3. They have an inflated ego if they think the majority of 186,000+ people read their posts.
    4. Or...?

    Cheers,
    Becky

    Thanks Becky for this observation.

Such folks think they are lecturers addressing the final year students that started school virtually the same day in a college.

There seems to be a new trend, too, in people who post that AND link to a previous thread they started. That's carrying backlinking to a new low.

As I said in my previous thread....never mind, I forgot.

I can't even fricken remember my last post.

Hell, I won't remember this post after I'm done typing it.

Maybe I need a memory manager.

        I smell a WSO coming.

I don't know why, but it just tickles me when people say "as most of you know."

Hey Guys - I don't want to start a big, fat thread about it and get all the "me,toos" involved - but what happened to the big old ads at the top of the WF page? Even the WSO Allen started seems to be gone.

              Good question.

Wonder if it's glitch... or maybe they're changing the way they display ads... or maybe they're just in the process of changing ads... or maybe it's because it's a Thursday and it didn't rain last night... or maybe....

              Oh heck, I don't know.

              ETA...

I bet you could have fun with it, though. Post a new thread in the main forum and tell folks that Allen has decided to offer a free front page ad to the person who writes the best 500 word essay on why they deserve a front page ad.

You could make it sound somewhat believable by saying something like, "I just got this PM from Allen..." (And then create what looks like the contents of a PM from admin.)

Even though it's April Fool's Day, I bet lots of folks would immediately scribble out their essays.

Universally most people think what they've said is important and worth repeating ad nauseam.

At first I didn't understand what this was all about, but now I realise that this is a follow up to the threads you posted here, here and here.
