Flyers can be effective if done right. Most areas have restrictions with severe penalties now, so be careful and get permission first! Do NOT put flyers on telephone poles or windshields; that could cause a lot of grief for you. What I do is hire some high school kids to pass out flyers door to door (residences and small businesses).

If you have some proven pull with your flyers, you might also try negotiating with Mom and Pop type stores to distribute flyers to their customers.

MYOB is right. I was sticking flyers under windshield wipers in some hick town in California a few years back, promoting a real estate auction my sister was involved in. Some cop lit me up and made me remove all the flyers on penalty of a $300 ticket. thankfully he didn't write me up, but he did sit in his prowler and watch me until I got the last flyer removed. No one needs that kind of grief in their life.

What niche is your new business in and where is it located?

Depends on what the business is, and where it's at. So far neither question has been answered.

Fliers are generally only effective in a localized setting. For example if you're opening up a restaurant in the area. And as someone above said, it must also be in an area where it's not against the law.

If your business is purely an online business, then fliers are pretty much useless, unless you're leaving them at a similar business. But putting out fliers just for the sake of getting word out about your business is a waste of monumental proportions. At least compared to other tasks you could be performing to get the word out. Just think about it. Could you imagine having to hand deliver an e-mail campaign? And on top of that having to hand deliver your e-mails to a list that is not even guaranteed to be in the niche you're advertising?

Here's a much more effective way to advertise locally - and possibly even cheaper:

I agree with garyv. If you had a brick and mortar travel agency it might be worth it. But you're in a pretty big market that is dominated by some pretty big names with deep pockets.

I'd probably start out with youtube channel filled with vids you make, maybe about certain destinations, and accompany them with some kind of informational package about each place...get the interest going TO travel and see other places, create a need....and then provide a filler for that need, your site/services.

The fliers I distribute are also in a highly competitive market and dominated by pretty big names with deep pockets - cellular service. There are cellular phone stores everywhere, but the fliers are pulling very well. I hire high school students to pass out full color fliers door to door to homes and small businesses. It is a whole lot less expensive than mailing. Just be aware of the law, as there are also laws for online marketing and telemarketing. All such forms of marketing have their place and have been proven to be effective. Give it a shot.

On cell phones, i could see that. But i would think with travel..its all about eyecandy. You can pass along the benefits of cell phones and cell plans in text, but if you want to sell someone a peaceful time on a far away beach, actual visual images of the beach, big color pictures, videos etc would work better, so they can sort of invision themselves relaxing under that grove of swaying palm trees with ocean sounds in the background. Its easier to pass that imagery along in a medium like the internet than it is on a flat piece of paper that you stick on a door handle.

              just my .02.
