If You Were a Billionaire for Five Hours

When Paul Fischer checked his bank account Friday night, he had a happy surprise.
His balance had exploded to $88,888,888,888.88.
A very lucky number indeed, and close to $89 billion.

Of course, the balance was a technical error by SunTrust Bank
(NYSE: STI - News), which quickly fixed the problem.
It also may have occurred in other accounts.

Mr. Fischer had other ideas as well.
Before the problem was fixed, he asked a SunTrust rep if he could move the money
to an interest-bearing account until it was reclaimed and donate the interest to charity.
Total interest: more than $7.3 million.

The bank said no.

The money was stripped out of his account by Saturday morning.

"It's all gone. I'm poor again," he said. "I was a billionaire for five hours."

This kind of bank error happens frequently.
But Mr. Fischer raises an interesting question:
What if, for five hours, you truly did have $89 billion?

What would you do with the money?
The ground rules are that you would have to give the money back --
and whatever you bought or invested with it -- after five hours.

Mr. Fischer wasn't thinking! "OH, could I give the money back to you, and have you pay me INTEREST until you get this straightened out?" I mean it couldn't put it anywhere else. That is theft, check fraud, and kiting. He could be guilty of THREE felonies, and have TWO banks breathing down his neck.

So he basically wanted a REWARD for doing NOTHING!

      In five hours?

There's only place on Earth you could go where you'd never be found - the same cave as a Mr bin Laden.

So that blind people can hate them as well.

Oh! I will buy everything me and my family needs and we'll definitely donate to different charitable institutions. Oh how I wish it is true.

Oh jeez. If I had to give EVERYTHING back what would be the point? I would end up owing money. And lot's of it! No?

    Great question.

I honestly dont know, with 89 billion and if I really did own it, one major headache probably but the logical thing that comes up in my mind is use that money to better people's lives. I don't mean giving away like 90% of it but making a step by step plan and dedicating myself full time to a human cause.

Wow that's an intersting story. It's amazing to watch interest grow. It can spring up like wild flowers. I have heard of people making money in the Forex market but I think that has died off since the economy took a nose dive.

If I have to give it back, along with anything I got from having it, I'm just going to call the bank and tell them to get their act together before someone thinks it's for real and calls one of those TV lawyers...

It would have been nice to skim some of this off the top - you know by making payments with a debt card or such. It's their error - if you are just going about paying your bills and such it's no issue.
But it would be cool to get a lawyer and find out the loopholes in something like this. For 5 hours that cash is in your acct. so it's available to be used.
Now if someone is really good at playing the races, craps or whatever - they take a chunk out...play with that amount (this is supposing that they win) then put that money aside that they took out and just use the winnings to continue to play.

What would be awesome is to take out about 1-2k and play that mega slot machine that pays out in the millions. Then put back the mini loan and have that for a consolation prize...lol

It would just be so awesome to have a photo of all that money in the bank acct. or to have a cashiers check made out to a cool 10 million so you could have someone video tape you with it. Just to have for posterity since that's like once in a lifetime kind of thing happening. Be a great memory to show the grand kids...
