I recently signed up for an elance account, and while I was reading through their material for the admissions test, I noticed that on every page I was actively reading it said "transfering data to 04.presence.userplane.com".

When I open a new page in a different window, it starts transfering from that page & stops on the one before. I was just reading the general how-to of setting up jobs, submitting work, etc, so why am I being watched?

It creeps me out. I went and checked out userplane.com, here's what their homepage had to say:

"Our award-winning technology, localized in 14 languages, makes it easy for websites to add content and functionality in an instant. For small to mid-size websites, grow your community with Userplane. For large publishers, let Userplane provide a scalable, enterprise solution that will drive user engagement and increase retention."
Nothing about actively tracking users, watching over their shoulder as they browse through pages - guess that's how they define 'functionality'.

Dunno, like I said it freaked me out - anyone know anything about this?

Well, the "transferring data to..." is probably because of AJAX. It wouldn't actually be transferring data from your computer, etc... but rather about what you want, and things the page collected or needs. userplane is apparently a foundation for social sites, and affiliated with AOL! They have arranged with OTHER social sites to become a huge site, almost like Google, etc.... It is probably 100% benign.
