Fear of Guns - desparate niche?

Is this a desperate niche? I know people who won't go to or visit relatives or friends houses if they know they have guns - even if they are locked in a gun cabinet or secured with locking mechanisms. Anyone else heard of this phobia.

Thought was triggered as I unitentionally came across a monster hand gun while helping a friend move last weekend.

I'm not phobic - but I confess - I was slightly freaked.

The best way to overcome fear of any firearms is good firearms training. Maybe you could do a joint venture with local firearms trainers in your area.

Yeah - and maybe put up some sort of site discussing the issue of hand gun safety, laws for the various states, and a directory of hand gun safety trainers in various locations.

Mabye even a few videos - going over the safety basics - and then have links to products for hand gun safety.

So explain to me how that's a bad thing:confused:

Myself I'm not afraid of guns, but having been shot before I sure do pay attention when I'm around someone who has a gun.
Many of my friends are hunters and a few are gun collectors.
They don't make me nervous at all because I know them and I know they have respect for firearms and what they can do.
When I'm around someone I don't know well who has a gun on them I tend to get a little nervous.

Learn to shoot with a small caliber weapon like a 22 cal. ; That way you can progress slowly and not have to deal with the noise and recoil of larger caliber guns.

One other point. Remember that guns don't kill people, it's people who kill people.
A gun can save your life, especially if someone is trying to take yours.

P.S. You can still be a gentle person and keep a gun for defense only!

Hmmm - wonder what the weather is in Hell today?
I have to agree 100% with this.
People killed way before there were guns. If you take away everything people can kill you with you won't even have pillows on your bed. Butter knife? Forget it. Fishing line, nope. Diamonds - sorry, very lethal.

So tell me, anyone, how do you keep a person from killing someone? Guns don't seem like the logical answer to that one. Does anyone have one?

Sal, the only way I've ever come up with is to be someplace else when that person gets the urge to kill. The problem is, in most cases that's impossibly hard to predict.

Guns don't scare me. Gun owners with no respect for what the gun can do scare the hell out of me.

Back in Nebraska, I belonged to a gun club, and one of our annual events was a community gun show. We personally checked every firearm that came into the building, and it was petrifying how many "unloaded" guns had cartridges in the chamber.

      As for protection...

According to our county sheriff and the highway patrol officer that spoke to our Hunter Safety classes, the best firearm you can have for personal protection is a 12 gauge pump shotgun. Just working the action is such a distinctive sound that if an intruder hears it coming out of the dark, it can freeze them. You don't even have to aim, just point it in the direction of your target.

One thing they both stressed was being familiar enough with the weapon of choice to load it in the dark under stress. There should be no need to keep a loaded firearm in the house. One demonstrated that the average firearm can be loaded and ready to use in less than 30 seconds - less than ten with practice.

The other thing they stressed was never pointing a firearm at anything you don't intend to shoot. That means that if you don't think you can actually pull the trigger, you have no use for a gun for protection. You're more likely to have the gun taken away from you and used on you.

Sorry about that... I get going and it's hard to put on the verbal brakes.

To the original poster - this is only a desperate niche if people who have this phobia want to get past it. Otherwise, it's just another phobia...

WOW! A LOT of people have made me MAD! One made me yell like I didn't know I could. I recorded him for MONTHS to show how HE was the cause!

Well, I DOUBT there would be EVEN a 0.5% chance I would shoot him. Not all people are as violent as you think. BTW let me say, just since SOME feel it would ah, color, my opinion, the guy I just spoke about was NOT white, not that I would be any happier if he were.

And YEAH, I'm sure you said .5 as a way of meaning 50%, but that is MORE ridiculous. HECK, I had bullies in school when I had guns available, and I never bothered using the guns.

And there ARE explosives, fireworks, knives, hooks, etc... LOTS of things can be dangerous. Want to shove us into the stone age!?!?!? OH YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT! STONES can kill TOO!

Like you pointed out, "People killed way before there were guns," you will never stop some people from killing...but you can be serious about locking them up. Crime goes down proportionate to the consequences rising.

Deterrents work when used, problem is... society doesn't have the stomach to use 'em anymore.

That's all I'll say on the subject.

Doesn't really seem a fit of a desperate niche to me. People who have a fear of guns probably won't need or want to overcome this fear.

It's not like there is a big market of cops who are going to lose their job because they have a fear of guns. Or marriages being ruined because one spouse is a hunter and the other spouse is a hoplophobe.

        Search is pretty low...

You could wrap it around the self defense niche. Most people fear crime but as a stand-alone niche I don't think the numbers are that explosive (pun intended).
