NBA Playoff Prediction...

My LA Lakers will dust off a young but feisty Oklahoma Thunder tonight and continue their march to yet another NBA championship.

Anyone dare any predictions to the contrary?

Ps. We want the men in green in the finals - since we have quite a few scores to settle with them.

The Lakers will not beat the Thunder tonight. I am 100% positive of that.

The Lakers need to rest up for the next series.

      We'll talk about it tomorrow.

Yeah, I hope Orlando or Phoenix wins it all. I'm not a big fan of either Lebron or Kobe although they are the two best players.

I can't help my love for the Lakers since I've been with them since about 69.

As a matter of fact I was nicknamed Jerry West going through high school.

Not that I played on my high school team, but I had a very good fade-away jumper even while being closely guarded.

If the defender was not taller than me, he could not block my shot and I was pretty deadly.

    Go purple & gold.

    And...

once again I'd prefer the men in green to avenge the many previous loses in the NBA finals and to catch up with them as the greatest NBA franchise.

Don't be surprised if they knock off Lebron and company.

      Lakers suck.

      Sorry, couldn't resist.

All kidding aside, I haven't followed basketball in years. The Knicks and Nets
are two of the worst teams in history these days so for me (a New York,
New Jersey fan) there's nothing to watch.

Oh how I long for the days of Walt Frazier and Willis Reed.

Do you remember when West & Goodrich combined for about 80 ( yes, that's 80 ) points on Frazier and Monroe - in one game?

        - I think we are 1 & 1 against you ( the knicks ) in the finals.

I remember a game where Pete Maravich lit up the Knicks for 68 points. Clyde asked Earl the Pearl to try to cover Pistol Pete for a while and Earl replied something like "You're the defensive expert".

If not Denver, I like Phoenix. I'm pulling for both Steve Nash and Grant Hill, plus I like running teams and want a high scoring, running team to win the championship. IMO, that's how basketball should be played and wish the NBA would enforce the rules to encourage running and finesse, instead of all the pushing and shoving.

I'm not afraid to admit it.

        We got lucky!

Amazingly Gasol simply walked in, grab the rebound and put it back in!

Gasol's man did not put a body on gasol.

I think he froze up or expected the shot to go in and let Gasol get the rebound.

Collison looked like he was going out to help on Kobi but he was way to late to do that and then was out of position to block out Gasol. He looked like a dummy on that play.

This Lakers team isn't that impressive this year because their bench is probably the weakest of any team in the playoffs. They are basically playing 6 guys. No depth at all. Luckily for them the Jazz are banged up, but I'm hoping Deron Williams will be OK and the Jazz can reach the finals. I like Jerry Sloan and would love to see him win a Championship.

Phil is going to have to use the two young-boy guards and walton a lot more to get our starters some rest for the remainder of the playoffs.

Our bench may be the weakest of the remaining playoff teams but we have 4, that's 4 of the top 50-60 NBA players.

Just announced that Bynum has a problem with his knee.

Don't know how bad it is yet.

Without him the road ahead will be a lot steeper.

One down 3 to go for the Lakers Vs. The Jazz.

Lakers control game by around 8 points all game long.

Then... ( from the start of the 4th qtr )

bench vs. Jazz bench gives up the lead until Lakers insert their 4 top 50 players in with Derrick Fisher at the 7 minute 4th qtr mark - down by a bucket.

( Odum, Gasol, Bryant, Artest )

Lakers regain lead and win going away as Kobe takes control.

Here's what I know about basketball...

Somewhere in my family - I believe a second cousin - was a player for the Nets and then Denver. Was not a star - mostly a bench player from what my mother told me... although he IS one of three players in NBA history to hit 7 three-point field goals in a quarter...

John Roche (basketball) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I don't know a lot about the sport, but last night as I was flipping through channels, I found myself watching the Celtics/Cleveland game through most of the 3rd quarter...

    Edit:

LOL - I had this card growing up:

TL - turns out he played 15 games for the Lakers during the 75/76 season.

Actually, I never met him personally. My mother was 5 or 6 years older than he was and she used to baby-sit him when they were young. They were first cousins.

All I know about him now is that he is a lawyer somewhere. I believe he stayed in Colorado after he left basketball.

It was nice reading about him though. I remember as kids we were all excited when we saw him playing on T.V. But that was so long ago now.

But there is just something in his mentality and overall character that negates those gifts. Anybody remember when he refused to shake hands with orlando?, those dance moves in chicago? There is no ounce of class in the man. He might be the best player in the NBA today. But he doesn't come close to the will power of men like Isiah thomas, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Jordan, etc...

Yeah, I remember the refusal to shake hands and dancing. At least tonight he shook hands and congratulated the Celtics.

I didn't want to see Cleveland lose because they would have home court advantage against the Lakers if they both got that far. However, the way they are playing they wouldn't beat the Lakers anyways and I don't really mind seeing James lose.

My dream final is Orlando against the Suns. That would be a terrifically entertaining final.

I know John Roche...I'm an old-school Denver basketball fan...And he was a great three point shooter. Had he played in today's game where the 3-pointer is more prevelant, he probably would have had a more distinguished career.

And I remember Downtown Freddy Brown...An all-time great shooter. I know I'm getting old, I can even remember him playing at Iowa.

I found his stats on NBA & ABA Basketball Statistics & History | Basketball-Reference.com

But because of my lack of knowledge about Basketball I have no idea what they mean, if they are good, etc.

Ok then, since I am not a fan of ANY team - who should I be routing for right now?

Did you watch the Bird and Magic documentary on HBO recently? I thought it was quite good. I was in the Navy during one of their last championship meetings (forgot who won though). But I remember, even overseas where I was stationed, there was quite fan base for both teams.

At the time I didn't care who won. But I routed for the Lakers. Why? Because Boston is the home of the Red Sox. And I love the Yankees.

            Logical...no?

Yes, I saw that documentary and it brought back lots of memories.

Especially the 1st time they met as pros when the Celts won in 7 games.

Instead of Magic Johnson we were calling him Tragic Johnson - after that series - since he choked big time.

But we eventually got revenge and actually beat them twice vs. the one time they beat us.

          Hey Mike,

He was limited as a player, but he did one thing very well and that was shoot long-range shots. He didn't play a lot, but he was fun to watch when he was in.

Looking at his stats, he had a lot better career than I gave him credit for...He was a solid pro, with a 10 year career. If you can average 10+ points a game, you've had a pretty good season.

The truth, you have to be a tremendous basketball player to even play in the pros. John Roche has nothing to be ashamed of.

    Kurt,

Your #1 choice has been deleted. ( The Nuggets )

    Sorry.

I think your next choice is the Suns.

I'd like for my Lakers to meet them in the conference finals but first we have to dispatch with the pesky "Jazz" from Utah, and the Suns must get rid of the Spurs of San Antonio.

Hope that we can get together soon.

Laker march continues as they control most of game but Utah closes to within 4 at the final 5 minute mark - then LA pulls away.
    2 Down 2 to go.

Will probably split in Utah and finish up in 5.

    TL

Ps. Cleveland is in trouble and must at least earn a split the 2 games in Boston or they are toast.

the lakers vs jazz matchup will not last long. I predict a sweep or at most a 5 game series. The Jazz is a good team, but they do not have the big men to guard bynum or gasol especially when both are on the court. I'm leaning towards the 5 game series because I do believe that they will win one at home.

As for who will win the championshiop, I don't believe that the Lakers will repeat and I say that with pride...haha Kobe is not the same as he was last year and his shooting has been looking pretty bad lately except for the last game. Their bench or as Charles Barkley says "their B" sucks! They have no bench players that can produce anymore. I think Odom and maybe Shannon Brown are the only legit bench players that can help so with that being said, I believe that Lebron will win his first championship this year although the celtics and even the Magic can give them a run for their money.

I know some people dislike Lebron but you have to admit, he's one of the best players in the NBA right now. Averaging triple double numbers almost every game means he has game!

I'm predicting a Laker/Suns in the west and Cavs/Magic in the East.

That's my final four prediction for now.

Utah's missing two of its starters: Okur and AK47.

As long as the Nuggets were in it I couldn't make an honest prediction...But now, I actually like the winner of the Suns/Spurs series to win it all. The Suns have been playing very well for 2-3 months now.

Orlando and Atlanta in a tight battle for 3 quarters, then the Magic pulls away to win 112-98.

    The return of Vince Carter.

    Atlanta is not ready yet.

This series won't go more than 6 games.

My Lakers continue march to 16th NBA championship on Saturday night in Utah.

Lakers will be happy with a split of the two games in Salt Lake City.

If split happens LA will be up 3-1 with the game #5 in LA.

Cleveland must win game 3 tonight - in Boston, or IMHO they are toast.

If they don't win tonight, they will crack under the pressure in also lose game #4 in Boston.

Then they'll be down 3 games to 1.

    Also tonight, Sun vs. Spurs:

Suns hold 2-0 lead in series and of course the spurs must win both games at home or they are toast.

The Suns really look good now. In the third quarter tonight they were behind by about 8 but the Spurs looked defeated already. They have a lot of depth and I think will give the Lakers or Jazz a tough time although the Lakers won the season series 3-1. Go Suns!!

            Hey Tim and All...

Funny you mention Sikma. I was just thinking about him yesterday...I came to the conclusion that if he played today, he'd be one of the two best centers in the NBA, Dwight Howard the other. The game's really changed.

David Thompson is probably my favorite athlete of all time. I was a huge fan of his at NC State when he beat Walton's UCLA. The day he became a Nugget may have been the happiest sports has ever made me.

This is a true story and I'm an eye witness...David Thompson used to do a dunk during warmups called "rock the baby" that's still famous around these parts. He only did it for the first few games of his pro career in the old ABA because the team banned him for doing it because it was too dangerous...

He would cup the ball inbetween his forearm and bicep, run and jump, then he'd literally PUNCH the ball through the rim with his other hand. I swear he was looking DOWN THROUGH the rim. I've never seen anything like it since. It's too bad they didn't keep much film of the old ABA days and have a record of Thompson's "Rock the Baby" dunk.

Cavs surprise me and destroy the Celts - in beantown.

A very serious Lebron comes out on fire and the Cavs never looked back to regain homecourt advantage.

I'm still undecided on who the winner of the series will be but after last night, I'm leaning towards the Cavs who after all did win 60 games this season.

    Meanwhile...

    - Suns hang close to Spurs for 3 quarters and then light it up in forth to pull away and take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.

Who is that dude from Slovenia ?????

    - My Lakers need to polish off Utah asap to get ready for a rested Sun ball club in the conference finals.

I'm a little concerned about the Suns.

A young Utah team come out on fire, puts up a spirited and valiant fight but still falls to the mighty Lakers.

Utah is up by as much as 13 for most of the game but LA closes to 1 at beginning of 4th and hangs tight through most of the period.

Lakers take lead late in game with a Derick Fisher 3 pointer...

After refs try to help Utah by not calling a obvious foul on a LA inbounds play...

... with the Lakers leading by 2...

..the Jazz "steals" the ball and calls a TO with 4.4 seconds remaining.

    But...

    After ball is inbounded...

    (2nd team All NBA guard)

Deron Williams' wide open 20 foot jumper rims out and the follow-up-point-blank tap-in by Wesley Matthews Jr. ...

...slowly rolls on the back of the rim and falls off!

    Gasol rebounds!!

    Game over!!

    Justice prevails!

    Lakers now up 3-0!

Celts stay alive and wouldn't surprise me if they win the series vs. the Cavs.

As a Laker fan we want the Celts to win because Cleveland will have the HC advantage vs. the Lakers but no other team will.

Await Lakers unless Jazz overcomes 3-0 lead by LA.

Cavs blown out at home in most important game of season.

James did not show up - for whatever the reason.

Only 14 shots from the field.

Were the Celts double teaming Lebron, forcing him to give up the ball and the other Cavs couldn't hit a shot?

    Bad coaching???

    I didn't see the game.

    Looks like...

Shaq did his job with 21 points on 7-11 from the field and 7 of 10 free throws.

    It should be over.

Celts are something like 35-1 when in this playoff situation.

    - Game 6 up 3-2 at home:

We may get the men in green after all.

They have 3 3/4 of top 60 players in the NBA.

Exactly...the commentators were surprised they're not fouling with still a minute left in the clock. That's not a playoff team right there. LeBron should lead an example and foul the man with the ball but all of them just stood up and waited for the Celtics to kill the clock.

I think James will go to New York and Brown will get his pink slip.

Young Cavs no match for healthy Celts.

Expect Boston to defeat Magic also.

    3 & 1/2 maybe 4 top 60 players vs. only ( or 2 & 3/4 ) for Magic.

    Experience beats youth again.

Lakers school Suns in 6 games max.

    leading to...

Another titanic match up of Celts vs. Lakers in finals with Lakers getting a measure of revenge - in their long war for total supremacy of NBA - in 7 games.

    Kobe has two goals...

#1: To become the greatest Laker of them all... ( most titles )

#2: Help the Lakers catch or surpass the Celts with the most NBA titles. (Celts = 17 Lakers = 15)

If he does it vs. the Celts, his legend is magnified in Lakerland.

We want the men in green this season and next.

I hope the Suns are more ready than the Magic were yesterday. Wow, they looked pathetic.

By the way, I love how Nash responded to Jackson's comment about Nash carrying the ball: ""I've never heard anyone accuse me of carrying it. I mean, the best coach in the league Gregg Popovich (of San Antonio) didn't have a problem with it last week.'' haha. Love Nash.

I think carrying the ball has become an acceptable part of the game as long as you don't dribble the ball - over your shoulder or hold the ball too long while palming/carrying the ball.

Yeah, he's done this many times. I think he has convinced himself that by him saying these things it's one way he contributes to the championship rings he gets. I mean, how else does he earn them? What else does he really do besides picking teams led by the top player in the league and usually three or four of the top 50 players as you point out. I would like to see Jackson coach a rebuilding team once and see how well he does.

            Not gana happen.

            Wouldn't be prudent for Phil.

It's tough enough coaching a very good team vs. a rebuilding or simply competitive team.

He's admitted that he's been lucky at being at the right place at the right time.

He took over for Doug Collins in Chicago and then lead Bulls to first of 6 titles.

            IMHO...

Phil is also a master of getting the most out of his teams.

His teams are always smart, hustle, don't rely on talent alone and he is a master tactician when it comes to making adjustments.

            IMHO...

Barry Switzer and Rick Adelman are good examples of the opposite type of coach that rely on sheer talent alone.

Switzer could have won a couple more college football national championships but he wouldn't add any wrinkles to that basic wishbone attack.

He won a Super Bowl but as far as I'm concerned he was a caretaker coach with tons of talent at the top of their game.

Adelman had a bunch of highly talented NBA teams in Portland and Sacramento but they couldn't win any championships because they didn't play smart when it really counted.

It was a recurring theme with his teams.

            BTW...

I don't understand why Phil jumped in the middle of the Arizona situation.

            All The Best!!!

The Lakers have a great starting five, but the Suns have more quality players it seems. That was one of the stories tonight anyways. Gentry is proving to be a good coach also.

Yes, IMO they are violating US law if they pay you...Although now that I think about it, the law was part of the Patriot Act. Has that been repealed?

But, it's illegal to bet on sports in the state of CA. Do even any of the Indian casinos have sportsbooks?

Don't know. A few years ago I took $200 and played the NBA on one of these sites for about 4 months before losing it. It was fun, but my problem was I bet with my heart and not my mind. Easy to do.

As far as I know, many if not most of them do. It's not illegal in CA if you bet on sports inside tribal Indian casinos; all attempts to outlaw it have failed. It's got something to with making these tribes culturally and economically "self-sufficient".

Celts brought back down to earth by defending eastern conf. champs Orlando Magic.

Series now stands at 3-2 going back to Boston with Boston leading.

Somebody better be careful or game 6 could be the start of some historic karma stuff that I would revel in.

Lakers pull one out of the hat to win at buzzer 105-103!

    ( LOL )

Ron Artest saves day with offensive rebound and putback - after playing as if his family was being held hostage for all of the game.

( he was really getting on my nerves )

Confident Lakers will win in Phoenix and take series in 6 games.

I'm off to Harry Potter land until Sunday.

Lakers blow away the Suns and lead by 17 at start of 4th.

Silly flagrant foul by Vulivich against other eastern European dude results in 6 point play at start of 4th - cutting lead to 11.

Suns close to within 3 before Kobe takes over with 4 or 5 clutch baskets.

Lakers prevail in Phoenix to win series in 6 games.

The men in green await game #1 of NBA Finals on Thursday night in LA.

      Ha, ha, ha ha,

Do you realize that the Celtics have the Lakers numbers? Check the history of this perennial rivalry.

Yes LA has the TO but with Rondo emerging as a premier point guard, the Celts quads trumps LA's triangle in this series, which is going to be G-O-O-D!

I have nothing but mad respect for Kobe; he's a closer no doubt and with the addition of Gasol and a healthy Bynum, they are scary dangerous. But IMHO, I believe Ariza would have been the X-factor in this series. It's too bad that LA couldn't find a way to retain his services.

      My predictions
      • Perkins gets no more T's
      • Artest will get ejected in one game
      • Rondo hits a double double in five of six games
      • Gasol will foul out of one game
      • The Lakers take a number of bumps and bruises
      • Phil Jackson goes to Atlanta after this series
      • Lebron James goes to Atlanta
Celtics take Lakers in six games.

I'm batting 1000 so don't bet against me!

The only thing we agree on is the Colts of the NFL.

Actually this recent conflagration between the NBA best franchises will be a repeat of what happened in the 1980's.

In the 1980's, Boston won the first meeting with LA taking the next two.

( only a number of serious blunders by the Lakers and leprechaun luck enabled the Celts to win that first meeting - aided by "51 free throws" for the Celts in game # 7)

        FYI...

The Lakers have 4 top 50-60 players not 3.

        They are...

        - Kobe
        - Gasol
        - Odum
        - Artest

        - The Celts will have just as many bumps and bruises this time around.

        - It will get quite chippy out there.

        - The Celts will lose 1 game at home and come back to LA down 3-2.

        - If they can lose a game at home to the Cavs and the Magic they will also lose a game at home against the Lakers.

        - The Lakers are un-defeated at home during this years' playoffs.

        - Remember, the finals has a 2-3-2 game format.

        - I'll take Artest over Arizza anytime.

        - Phil's not going anywhere.

        Speaking of history...

The Lakers will defeat the men in green this time around and at least one more time within the next 2 years to tie them for the most NBA titles.

        Then...

The Lakers are young compared to the Celts and will out last them with another 2 or 3 championships after this win to become the greatest NBA franchise of allllllllllllll time.

It's a real stretch to put Artest and Odom among the top 60 players in the league. Here's their numbers for this year:

          Artest: 2009-2010: 77 33.8 .414 .355 .688 4.3 3.0 11.0
I know he is a very good defender but even those stats have gone down. Both steals and blocks are way below his best years. He was defensive player of the year in 2004 but hasn't been named to the All Defensive First Team since 2006. He was an allstar only one year. I may put him in the top 100 but top 60 I don't think so.

          Odom: 2009-2010: 82 31.5 .463 .319 .693 9.8 3.3 10.8
Odom hasn't been an All Star in ten years. His scoring average this year is the lowest it's been in ten years. Again, he may be in the top 100, but top 60 is arguable.

Both Artest and Odom have been inconsistent this year including in the playoffs.

OK, perhaps I'm a wee bit bias.

I'm willing to stretch it to the top 75 players - since...

            - they are not the first or even the second offensive option for the Lakers.

            - If both those guys were on a team that needed them to do more they could and would which would lead to much better stats for them.

            The Lakers know their value.

The Lakers pay 13 million per year to keep Odum happy.

            Experience matters.

            Teams like...

Nets, 76'ers, Knicks, Grizzles, Bobcats, Timberwolfs, Kings, Clippers and the Pacers have no top 60 players at all - IMHO.

            ( check the rosters )

Just because they have a player that shoots a lot doesn't necessarily put them in the top 60 players.

That's 9 of 30 teams with no top 60 players.

That leaves 21 teams with at least 1 and most of them have only 1.

Even if the remaining 21 teams averaged 2 top 60 players, that would still leave a lot of room for Odum & Artest to be among the top 60 players.

            Experience matters.

Artest had 25 in game 6 vs. the Suns.

As far as consistency is concerned, with this much talent, we don't need everyone to have a good game - every game - just show up when it matters.

I'm willing to stretch it to the top 75 players but IMHO, top 100 is a little much.

Nets, I agree. Knicks, I would say David Lee at 20.2 PPG, 11.7 rpg, 3.6 apg and 54.5 fg% is a top 50 player. Grizzlies? Gay and Mayo potentially are. Probably not now though. Bobcats? Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace are probably top 60 players or close to being there. Timberwolves? Nope. Kings: Tyreke Evans? Too early perhaps but he looks like a star for years to come. Clippers: Chris Kaman is almost a 20/10 guy now. Doesn't look like a star but gets the work done. Pacers: Danny Granger can score. Top 60? perhaps.

Lakers/Celtics...Exactly what's wrong with the NBA (and MLB). A league has a serious competition issue when 2 teams have won more than half the total championships throughout history.

This is why I'm a bigger NFL fan...Teams in cities like Green Bay, New Orleans and Indianopolis have just as good a chance of winning it all as the teams in the major markets, unlike MLB and NBA. Geez, a Superbowl with small market teams like Indy and N.O. broke broadcast records.

I agree. It's definitely a problem. I'm sick of these two teams. And I still can't believe the Lakers got Gasol for nothing. How was that ever allowed?

Meanwhile, the Celtics laid an egg tonight. I thought if the Celtics had a chance to win the series they would have to win game one. They still have a chance but they will really have to step it up.

I agree, there could be more competition for championships but as a Laker fan, I don't really care.

      It's a long war.

The NBA will be here a couple hundred years from now, maybe things will start to even out.

Artest & Pierce on floor within the first possession.

These two have tangled in the past.

Lakers coolly take game 1 after a close, low scoring game, for the first 1 & 2/3 of the first half & go into the half up by 9 - 50-41.

Kobe controls 3 period as lead jumps to 20 in the 3rd and Lakers lead by 18 at start of 4th.

Celts cut lead to 9 but no closer as Lakers pull away to win 102-89.

    Notes:

    - Bryant, Gasol combine for 53 points.

    - Team that wins first game has won 73% of NBA finals:

    - Phil Jackson's record after winning first game of a series is 43-0:

    - Chris Rock was unable to distract a very serious Kobe.

    - 1 down 3 to go!

    - Game 2 Sunday night @8 eastern.

Gasol put his foot in his mouth and has unwittingly stirred up a hornet's nest. The Celtics are a battle tested team and irregardless of the outcome of game #1; they are taking game two with vengeance.

    - After seeing game 1, I'm confident the Lakers can wrap this title up in less than 7 games - maybe in 5.

    - The refs are calling this thing a little too close with 67 foul shots in game 1.

    - Gasol says Garnett has lost some of his skills since the knee injury.

    - Gasol doesn't appreciate all the extra smack Garnett uttered towards him in the 2008 finals.

    - Gasol doesn't appreciate all the talk of him being soft.

    - Kobe on Rondo effectively neutralizes Rondo the same way Jordan neutralized a smaller Gary Payton in another NBA championship series.

    - Celts must win at least one game in LA or else.

    - They won't win the 3 games in a row in Boston so they're going to have to win 2 games in LA - not gana happen.

    - It's going to get extra chippy tonight.

    - The only thing that can save the men in green is injury to Kobe or Gasol.

My prediction for tonight is LA 97 Bos 90.

Gotta give it to them greens. They sure are tough. On a side note, Garnett clearly tipped the ball out of bounds when they were just leading by three. I don't know about the refs and their rules on overturning a call, but that's a bad call in my book. Still, awesome performance by the Celtics.

        - The series will return to LA with the Lakers down 3-2 and the Lakers will win the final two games of the series to win the series in 7 games.

I will continue to wear the hat during the remaining games.

Honestly, I thought the Celts were toast at halftime. The Lakers only down by 6 with Allen hitting 7-8 on 3's...I didn't see how the Celts could keep it up.

I think long rests benefits the Celts more than the Lakers and they were off for 3-4 days...Which is another complaint of my...If hockey teams can play every-other day in the playoffs, why can't the NBA? Hockey players go through more "stuff" than NBA players and if they can play after a days rest, so can the NBA. The playoffs are just way too long.

I don't know about that. In hockey you can just glide around on your skates with little effort it seems to me. I don't mean all the time of course, but for a good amount of the real time game I see players physically moving very little. In basketball you need to actually run to get to one point or another. It's a lot like a marathon for the players who log a lot of minutes.

Actually, hockey players go full out far more than bball players, that's why they change lines so much, they have to.

Plus, that's only the endurance part...Hockey players have far more bumps and bruises to recover from...Of course, the exception is Steve Nash, but he's Canadian so he's still a hockey player.

Hmm, I think basketball players go through a lot more in terms of stamina and strength. I don't know much about hockey, what I do know is that it is far more tiring to run than go really fast on skates. What about american football? I think it is by far the most physically demanding of the three. What with all the running and banging.

Football is irrelevant to my point, as they only play once a week.

And it doesn't matter if basketball players work more that hockey players. NBA players still don't need to play on Wed, then not play again till Sun.

Plus, it's not like in BBall you're running all the time. The majority of the time, they walk the ball up the court in today's game, rest during free throws, and are rarely really in a true sprint.

    - Men in green stun Laker faithful 103 - 94.

    - I was personally extra stunned by the performances of Ron Artest, Lamar Odor, I mean Odum and Derick Fisher.

These 3 combined for only 15 points in game #2.

Another 10 points from these three would have been enough to help secure the victory.

    - Rondo often got on my nerves with all of his tricks as he earned a triple double.

    - Kobe was erratic with a couple maybe three stupid fouls and a couple bad calls by the refs that slowed him down.

    - Ray Allen was a major prob with 7 first half 3 pointers.

OK Tim, now we have a series.

Will it come back to LA???????

I am all for the Lakers, although they lost last night's game, they will come around again. They tried all they could to prevent Kobi from getting the ball and it worked a bit, although he managed to beat them to it sometimes.

Overall, there was really good teamwork out there, Kobe of course, Fisher, Gasol, Bynum, Artest and Odum. Thumbs Up for them, even though they lost!

Hey you got to give it to Allen of Celtics and his 3 pointers, he is good at it, man!

          Yes, as the world turns...

Neither team shot well from 3 point land.

          LA = 2 of 15

          Bos = 4 of 18

Celts were ice cold for most of the game but not-so-smart shot selection and...

... playing like they were trying to avoid a loss instead of playing to win by the Lakers...

... let Boston back into the game and gave me & the wife a real scare.

After leading most of the game and up by as much as 18...

Celts close to within 2 in forth but...

Lakers hang on to win 91-84, regain home court advantage and now lead series...

    ... 2 games to 1.

    - Kobe was 10 of 29 from field with many ill-advised shots.

    - Gasol has 13 points on 5-11 from field but Lakers should have helped him get more shots.

    - Odum has decent game with 5 for 5 from field and 12 points.

    - Derick Fisher saves the day with 11, 4th period points and 16 for the game.

    - Celts continually challenged him to make big shots and he responded.

    - Ray Allen goes 0 for 13 from field after record setting game 2 in LA.

    - Garnett rebounds with 25 points on 11-16 from field.

    - Laker bench 10-14 from field.

    Will series return to LA???

    Hat trick worked!

Games 1 and 2 were record or close to record foul calls by the refs.

    Celts bench wins game 96-89.

Lakers played like they knew they were going to win this game without actually working for it.

Looks to me like Lakers tried to toy with the Celts and it backfired this game.

    Again...

... Celts ran cold again for 3 quarters in game 4,...

... but Lakers could not put them away seeming content and maintaining a small 3-6 point lead throughout most of the 1st half.

    But...

Celts score 36 in final period.

I knew the Celts couldn't and wouldn't stay cold forever.

Phil should have called more TO's to stay on the offense.

...and err, TO's to slow down the Celts offense.

    But that's not Phil's style.

Maybe he's getting lazy simply figuring, Lakers are gana win it sooner or later - even if...

...he does nothing but I believe...

... he should have tried to help manufacture a couple more spurts when the Celts were cold and they stayed cold for 3 quarters.

The Lakers better win or I may start to question his coaching.

Is he scared of the Celts???

There's an outside chance that the Celts may have traumatized him when he was a Knick and now he's spooked.

Will Phil be 0-2 verses the Celts in finals????

Phil's instructions for the Laker Offense...

1: Get the ball into Gasol.

( Gasol & Kobe should spend the summer working on their 2 man pick or screen and roll offense tactic. )

2: Get to the basket - try to force it.

3: Get some more movement in the offense.

    - Run Kobe through more screens.

    - Stop letting him lazily get the ball on a crowded wing.

4: Force Lamar to perform offensively.

    - He's playing sorta scared with another 5-10 from the field - not enough shots - IMHO - but he started to come to life in the 4th.

    But...

I guess it was Celtic defense.

    Offensive spacing was horrible.

Offense didn't work hard enough to get Gasol more shots - only 13.

Kobe seemed to want to take the hardest shot almost every time but still had a good game.

Lakers doubled in off rebounds also - 16 to 8 leading to 12 more shots for Celts.

Funny, you should mention shooting %...

Lakers had better FG and 3PT % and more 3PTRS.

Celts had edge in ft's by 1 point.

Celts bench and off rebs wins game 96-89 as it doubles Lakers bench 36-18.

Well, its back to LA Sunday eve.

        You're most welcome.

I have not coached basketball but I have coached football and baseball.

        Growing up...

I had all the "board based, table top" strategy American sports games growing up in the 60's and 70's.

From those board games I learned about the strategies, tactics and percentages revolving about the 3 American sports.

The games were statistical replay games and/or strategy based games.

I even went on to create my own football, basketball and baseball games that could be played on a computer in the mid 80's etc.

It was a DEC computer system that had computers hardwired to a mainframe at work and they had a simple programing language called DCL that I mastered fairly easily.

The games were never graphical but were text based.

I was so frustrated with the Lakers losing to the Celts in 1984 that I created a computer game of the Lakers vs. the Celtics - with all the personalities involved.

It was very competitive, realistic and people loved playing it.

In high school I created a game that we called "paper football" and we had leagues of 30 plus teams and we played during lunchtime.

Enjoy the rest of the series.

It's tough to win a NBA finals game while scoring only 86 points and shooting only 39% from the field.

    The Celts scored only 92.

Didn't see much of the game as I watched other stuff with the kid.

Every time I switched to the game for an update the Celts were up by 8-12 points.

    Celtic defensive strategy is clear...

When Kobe attacks the lane - seriously collapse on him and force other Lakers to make shots.

They can live with Kobe scoring 25+ well earned points and he ended up with 38.

Kobe was still close to 50% from the field at 13-27 with the rest of Lakers going only 18-51.

Gasol & Odum shot well but once again - not enough shot attempts.

Artest is killing us with another bleak 2-9 shooting night.

Game wasn't as close as the final score.

Now Celts are up in series 3-2 as I predicted, going back to LA for game 6 on Tuesday night & hopefully game #7.

Hopefully the home court advantage will kick in and Gasol, Odum, Artest, Fisher and the bench will play much better at home.

I'm sticking with my prediction of Lakers in 7.

Celtics defense is playing well as a team. You can see plays that would usually turn into layups for the Lakers being closed down because the Celtics know whats going on, such as on pick and rolls. No easy shots.

I personally thought the Lakers were more dangerous last year with Ariza. Why they let him go just didn't make sense. He was their leading 3point shooter in the playoffs last year. Made more than Kobi.

I think the Celtics will end the series in game 6 in LaLa land.

PS...When the Celtics have led an NBA Finals 3 games to 2, they are 11-0.

At halftime Lakers lead by 20.

Lakers coast in game 6 to tie at 3 games apiece...

    89-67.

Ron Artest shows up with 15 points & 3 of 6 from 3pointland.

Kobe was efficient with 26 points on 9-19 shooting plus 11 rebounds.

Gasol has solid game with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 9 assists - almost a triple double.

    Main story of the game...

Celts ice cold for 4 periods with only 67 total points.

Celts shoot only 33% from field with at least a dozen or so, in & out shots and many point-blank layup misses.

Phil describes defense as good and fortunate in post game conference.

Celtic big guy hurt and plays only 6 minutes.

Will he be available for game 7??

Lakers can not get overconfident during game 7...

... and will need at least 95 points to win it because...

... I doubt the Celts will have 2 extremely bad offensive games in a row.

Lakers bench comes alive at home to score 24 unanswered points vs. Celts bench.

    - The Celtics beat the Hawks 125-123 in double-OT in 1957, and they beat the Lakers 110-107 in overtime in 1962.

    - The Lakers and Celtics are the only franchises to have won more than one Finals Game 7.

    - The Lakers are 3-5 (1-5 since they moved to L.A.), with four of their five losses coming at the hands of Boston, who is 7-0.

    - Other franchises to play in more than one Finals Game 7 are the Knicks (1-3), the Pistons (0-3), the 76ers (1-1 as the Syracuse Nationals) and the Hawks (0-2 when they played in St. Louis).

    - The average score of Finals Game 7s has been Home 99, Road 95.

    - In this years' final, the team with the most rebounds has won each game.

    NBA Finals Game 7s

1951 Rochester Royals 79 New York Knicks 75

1952 Minneapolis Lakers 82 New York Knicks 65

    1954 Minneapolis Lakers 87 Syracuse Nationals 80

1955 Syracuse Nationals 92 Fort Wayne Pistons 91

1957 Boston Celtics 125 St. Louis Hawks 123

1960 Boston Celtics 122 St. Louis Hawks 103

1962 Boston Celtics 110 Los Angeles Lakers 107

1966 Boston Celtics 95 Los Angeles Lakers 93

1969 Boston Celtics* 108 Los Angeles Lakers 106

1970 New York Knicks 113 Los Angeles Lakers 99

    1974 Boston Celtics* 102 Milwaukee Bucks 87

    1978 Washington Bullets 105 Seattle SuperSonics 99

1984 Boston Celtics 111 Los Angeles Lakers 102

( All I can remember from this one is 51 free throws by the Celtics )

1988 Los Angeles Lakers 108 Detroit Pistons 105

    ( down 3 games to 2, Lakers win games 6 & 7 at home )

1994 Houston Rockets 90 New York Knicks 84

2005 San Antonio Spurs 81 Detroit Pistons 74

No matter what happens tonight, I've thoroughly enjoyed this years' NBA playoffs.

    My prediction...

    Lakers 95 Celtics 90

    Any other predictions????

I predict someone is going to WIN!

And anyone who doubts the veracity of that statement, put your money were your mouth is!

This series has been a humdinger full of twists, turns, surprises, up moments, down moments and waiting to exhale moments.

I'm sure most people will agree, this has been one hell of a seven games.

      May the best team win!

The Celtics need a big game from more than one player. You know Kobe is going to get his points so they need some hot shooting from Allen and Pierce with Rondo driving the ball. I'll pick the Celtics by 3.

Tim, I'm thinking the same thing. We may have to go overtime to see that outcome but I believe the Celts are going to be lifting another championship into the rafters after tonight.

    The Giants!

    Uh, wait...wrong sport.

Anyway, I have enjoyed following this thread. I have learned a little about basketball and some of the players (even if most revolved around one or two teams). And I have enjoyed my trip down family lane

Maybe next season I'll follow a little and see if I can pick up on the nuances of the game, etc.

Kobe goes 6-24, but luckily for the Lakers both Allen and Pierce shoot bad also. Not a greatly played game. Crazy game really. Sloppy. It was more like who lost the game than who won and the Celtics lost it.

        Tim,

        Perception is a mother.

        - Not a lot of turnovers with the Celts committing 14 and the Lakers having 11.

        - If the turnovers would have been in the 17-18 range for both teams then IMHO it could have been called a sloppy game.

        - Both teams are excellent defensive ball clubs with the most points being scored in a game at 103 by the Celts in game #2.

        - Both teams had so-called bad shooting games with offensive rebounds being one of the big differences in the game as the Lakers had 23 and the Celts only 8.

        also...

        - The Lakers were 25-37 from free throw line missing 12 of them and would have caught up and passed the Celts...

... a lot earlier in the game if they would have shot closer to their seasonal average and the Celts were only 15 of 17.

        Imho...

As the series moved back to LA...

The Celts were Deeeeeed-up as they scored a total of only 146 points in the final 2 games of the series and the Lakers were simply able to muster up enough offense to get by.

It's hard to win 2 important games - away from home, averaging only 73 points in those 2 games.

Ha, ha... the first thing I said after that pass to Kobe from Odom in the final seconds is, "That dog gone Artest got a ring..."

I think of some of the classy players before him that never experienced the exhilaration receiving a ring...

      Reggie Miller
      Stockton and Malone
      Dominique Wilkins

But as they say, "That's life!"

Congrats to the Lakers, they played their hearts out.

And special congratulations to the shrink who got Artest to shave that freakin ridiculous haircut and start acting like a normal person.

          My observations;

(a). If Perkins plays, the Celtics win! hands down.
(b). You're right Kurt, if the Celtics had home court advantage, the feed off the crowd and win hands down.

Kind of wondering if Lebron will ever win one. He may go down as one of the greatest players ever who never won the big one. If Doc Rivers stays in Boston and their nucleus remains intact with Rondo ever improving, I don't see any Cleveland team getting past Boston.

If the Atlanta Hawks really gel together, and learn how to play gritty ball in May and June, they may be the next beast in the east. If Lebron goes anywhere else, I still don't see it.

Overall, this was a great season and an awesome Finals.

          How does it feel TL?

I kind of feel this was this group of Celtics last chance at a Championship. The big three are getting old: Ray Allen 35, Garnett 34, Pierce 33. Wallace will be gone next year. Rondo is great, but can't shoot a lick. ( BTW Doc Rivers is a great coach. I remember my Warriors had a chance to sign him to his first coaching job in the NBA and was hoping they would. They didn't. :-( )

TL: By sloppy I don't just mean turnovers. I mean offensively sloppy. Sure, the defense was intense, but that is the norm for a game 7 in the finals. The players stunk on offense by missing passes, dribbling too much, lousy shot selection, and just terrible shooting. All I know is the Magic Johnson Lakers, the Michael Jordan Bulls or the Larry Bird Celtics would have creamed either one of these teams.

My favorite team of all time is the "fo-fo-fo" 76ers from '80-'81. In addition to Dr. J, Bobby Jones, Andrew Toney and Maurice Cheeks, their 3 centers were Moses Malone, Caldwell Jones and Darryl Dawkins. I'd like to see the Lakers' (or Celtics') bigs of today go against those 3 guys.

                Don't forget the Mixer!

Well Caldwell Jones wasn't all that special and Dr. Funkenstien was flashy & beefy but no big deal.

But Moses would have shoved these guys all over the court.

I loved Billy C's coaching style...

... and on many occasions his tie would be almost completely turned around-backwards by the end of the game.

He was also a very vocal coach on defense.

As a matter of fact I told my daughter about him last night.

I can still hear him yelling...

"get off him Andrew - get off him!!"

"get off him Andrew - get off him!!"

                when...

... Andew Toney would mistakenly crowd and overplay a offensive player with the ball - too far away from the basket.

                Or...

                "Take him Andrew take him!!"

                "Take him Andrew take him!!"

When the Sixers would clear out for him.

Billy C often was a 6 defender on the court.

They took out my Lakers in 4.

Jones > Bynum - Bynum may get better with age and if he can stay healthy, but right now I'd take Jones over Bynum.

Dawkins > Walton or any other big off the Lakers bench.

Remember, Daryl Dawkins was the 76ers THIRD STING center and in today's game would likely be a 20-10 guy easily and would give Gasol and every other center in the NBA today trouble, except for maybe Shaq.

But can you imagine Gasol trying to handle Moses?

And...Was Doug Collins on this team? I know "Bean Sr". was...I feel like I'm missing someone and it's not Steve Mix.

Lakers survive oh-so-troublesome, arch-enemies Boston Celtics for a gut-wrenching 83-79 victory for our 17th NBA title!

    - Only 1 more title to go to catch the Celts for most titles for a NBA franchise.

    - Ron Artest proves his worth with 20 points, 5 steals, 5 rebounds and a big, big, clutch 3 pointer with about 1 minute remaining - showing up when it really counted.

BTW, among the people Artest thanked for the victory was his psychiatrist.

    - Gasol shows up with 19 points and 18 rebounds including big 4th period.

    - Lakers survive with Kobe shooting only 6 of 24 from field - but 10, 4th period points - and 15 rebounds.

    - Once again, team with most rebounds wins game as Lakers out rebounded Celts 53-40 with 23 offensive rebounds.

Next 5 years looks bright for Lakers and we should win at least 2 more championships to overtake the Celts.

    It's a long war and...

As the Emperor on Star Wars once remarked...

Everything is going exactly as I have foreseen.

      Very true.

      Celtic seasonal strategy was sound.

Don't worry about the regular season - just get the team ready for the post season.

When healthy, Celts are still best team in east.

I also told by wife that the absence of Celts big man Perkins was worth 5 points and behold...

      Lakers win by 4.

I salute the men in green as they refused to make it easy for us.

If the big 3 stay together, I see us meeting them at least one more time in the finals over the next 2 years.

Of all the Laker championships this one is my favorite so far.

I'm still basking in the afterglow of victory.

    Almost better than __________.

I watched the game with the wife & our 11 year-old daughter.

    During the game...

    - The wife & I wore one of our many Laker tee shirts.

    - The kid wore our purple & gold cat in the hat type of hat.

    - We asked our kid to forgive our cursing and outbursts during the game because this was a very special situation.

As intense as it was I made it lots of fun for the kid.

    - We laughed at the reactions of people in the crowd...

    - She thought it was real funny when Jack deftly moved out of the way of Kevin Garnett as he crashed into the crowd going after a loose ball.

    - We begged the Lakers to make their foul shots...

    - When the Lakers took a slightly commanding lead late in the game, we joked about what we would do if the Lakers lost.

    Some of our rumblings...

    - I threatened to overturn the family room table.

    - The kid threatened to run through our french doors leading to the deck.

    - The wife would trash the entire family room.

    - I would attempt to pick up and throw our 47 inch plama TV but collapse in the effort.

    - It was loud and exhausting but tons of fun - especially since the Lakers won.

    - We had a bunch of Laker family hugs during and after the game.

But to keep things in perspective...

I also informed my daughter that if the Lakers lost, we would give them and us 10 minutes of mourning - that's it.

    All The Best!!

New Laker championship tee shirts have arrived!

My wife, the kid and I will wear them at the family's annual 4th of July get together.
