How can I find this spammer?

I've been persistantly bombarded by one particular spam email for months which contains viruses. My AVG antivirus pics up on it fortunately, but I've had enough.

I've attached the Message Source file... It has no virus in it now of course, but if someone understands this stuff, maybe you could tell me how to find out the perpetrator and therefore find a way of reporting this to someone that could take some action against the person.

Any ideas?

Thank you,

Norman Austin

    Some things you can do:

If there is a redirect link or domain name in the message: (I don't open attachments from anyone for security reasons)

    - you can find out the registrar at whois.net and report the domain to them (and/or the host) with your evidence that they are (a) spamming you and (b) sending maliscious code.

    - you can contact the abuse department at the email service they are using. Some of them require you to jump through hoops just to report spam - that is getting the full header detail to prove the mail is coming through their servers.

This usually works to get their email account shut down - sometimes you have to forward every email you receive before they will respond - but if you keep it up especially (if ignored) the threat that it is illegal for them to allow their system to knowingly be used in this way - they will eventually respond.

Downside is when they say that the person really doesn't have an account with them and is using a forged email address - this is often what spammers do - use someone else's email address in their message - however the full headers can show where it is actually coming from unless it is a proxy server.

Your email service/account will probably have a way to view 'original' or 'full headers' - if not contact them and ask for help to identify this miscreant.

Too bad you can't torture them when you find them. Pulling out one finger nail at a time sounds appropriate to me.

Thank you Patriacian for your very detailed response.

I particularly like the pulling finger nails out bit. If I find out who it is I'm going to send them some dog poop in a gift wrapped box.
