Self Righteous About Television

I am very proud, bordering on self-righteous when it comes to television. I don't ever watch it.

But why I am I such a hypocrite when it comes to "24", which I cannot miss.

I can't wait until that show goes off for good.

It is messing up my boasting.

    No sports???

    TV used correctly can be...

    - a teaching tool:

    PBS, History Channel, TLC, etc.

    - a source of laughter:

My 11 year-old daughter and I yuk-it-up at least once a day thanks to those super crazy sitcoms.

    - I'd rather watch the movie instead of reading the book:

    - Entertainment:

    Concerts etc.

    - Dramatizations etc.

I'm always recording something to watch later.

    Ps. No sports???

I do all playoff highlights on the .coms

      nba.com

      nhl.com

      mlb.com

The Chicago Cubs and White Sox taught me lessons about getting wrapped up in the whole thing only to watch them disappoint me in the playoffs. So 1995 notwithstanding when the Sox won, I only do sports on the .coms.

I don't own a television. On Saturday, as a treat, I download the latest Doctor Who and watch it on my PC.

My wife gets irked at me because I call the TV the idiot box and the remote the gerbalizer around the kids. We do not allow them to watch it during school days/nights nor can they use the WII. They have to do their homework and I force them either outside on nice days or into the family room to play and use their imagination during the week. We let them watch some stuff on nick, noogin, and disney over the weekends and play on the wii with their friends.

I feel if overused as a baby sitter ( since I've used it like that too - had to eat my words on that one) it can stiffle a kids imagination long before we adults kill it. But a little is ok - especially with DVR technology. That way I can tape (what is the correct verb anyway?) what I want to watch (NCIS, Dr Who, Phineas and Ferb -only for my kids of course - not that I would ever watch it myself.....) when I want to watch it.
If I am vegging then its Discovery or the History Channel. For some reason Biography has gone down hill over the past few years IMHO.

my .02 on the idiot box anyway.

I am not againt TV as such - just most of what is broadcast on it. Soaps are banned completely. We do watch certain programmes, not very many, but don't just switch it on for the sake of it.

Most of what is on TV is mindless junk but there are things that are worth watching.

I rarely watch, either. I will catch "House" sometimes, but not always. Otherwise, I pretty much avoid TV.
