The endorsement was expected but not as strong as he did.

My estimation of Colin Powell dropped with this one. Maybe its his way of getting back at the party for being used for Bush's agenda - but if so why did he remain quiet about it for so long?

No matter how strong his endorsement, I think many people will wonder what the real reason is for supporting Obama and for "coming out" so close to the election. Hard to believe someone who has strongly supported the Republican platform has suddenly changed all of his views and didn't mention it until now.

Wonder if Powell will now help Obama by appearing on numerous talk shows - or just make his announcement and disappear.

I dunno, Kay. I think Powell is probably the brightest and most ethical politician we've seen in many a year. I think the real shame is that HE isn't running for prez.

McCain's wheels started coming off when he stopped talking about what he would do for the country and instead focused on telling us why we shouldn't vote for Obama. Bush 1 made this same mistake back in '92 I believe it was. And for God's sake, would someone please tell the venerable senator to stop saying "My friends..."!

I'm not arguing XXX vs XXX .

Powell was used by Bush - but was reluctant for years to admit it or criticize what happened. He's an excellent military commander but that does not necessarily translate into an excellent politician.

To be such a strong supporter of a candidate and yet have done or said nothing about it throughout the campaign doesn't compute for me.

I've also thought of him as highly ethical - because of his military career and because of everything I've read about him. Yet he put party loyalty above all in not criticizing Bush's tactics for years. How the general public views his endorsement remains to be seen.

I that some will question his motives. Perhaps I'll see it differently after viewing a rerun of the endorsement - haven't had the TV on for a couple days:rolleyes:

Frankly speaking, I could see the greatest run for president being:

      Democrat Nominee: Hilary Clinton
      VS.
      Republican Nominee: Colin Powell

      What a great debate!

You hope your taxes go to Obamas plan to help some kids go to college. There's no guarantee they will, because we are dealing with politicians, which will only tell you what you want to hear. They'll lie straight to your face, if that's what will make you vote for them.
You'd be surprised how many citizens aren't interested in providing free college for every other person's kid. I worked two jobs to put my sons through school and they worked, too - Obama took student loans - and others have paid off students loans and worked their way through higher education.

I'd like to see larger government backed loans at decent interest offered to more students - but not totally free higher education. It's an entitlement we can't afford.

McCain gets a wannabe plumber and all Obama can come up with is
a retired General in the United States Army, Secretary of State, National Security Advisor and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff .....

I don't think anyone's endorsement makes a whole lot of difference. Have you ever voted on anyone or changed your vote because of an endorsement? I haven't and I doubt that most people have or will.

The McCain camp got desperate and hired the same advisors that smeared him about having a black child back in the 2000 primary.

now you have that cuban guy in florida that not only called him a socialist but also a communist.

Of course there is nothing wrong with following your chosen religion - no matter what religion that is. Nothing wrong with being an Arab - and what that has to do with a US President escapes me.

Powell supported Bush - got a high end appointment.

Changing sides now - supporting Obama - another high end appointment in the works.

Does it matter? Not really. I don't believe Powell's choice is based on "platform" as he's long been a strict conservative and is now endorsing a liberal platform.

I agree that not many people base their vote on "endorsements" and this one is just too obvious, though only Allen had the guts to say it. I hate that it looks that way - but it does.

    Well...back to the topic.

Obama says Powell to have a role as a TOP adviser in the White House (IF)

    Again...no surprise.

No matter what anyone says publicly, race plays a big factor in this and you know it.
does it really? could that also say that others didn't endorse Obama because he's black. I'm a centrist with a right leaning. McCain asked who is Obama, at the same time those that knew McCain minus his girlfriend Joe Lieberman is asking who is McCain. All McCain had to do was be McCain. He could have easily just selected Joe as his vp like he wanted to do. One thing for sure is that he would have still had the right regardless and also independents. This campaign could have been clean on his part with 0 negative ads from McCain's camp. But instead he ran to the right and well no one fights dirtier than republicans.

come on democrats dirty tactics are lame lol.... you know i've voted for all parties. some things i always find weird. like okay i will be taxed by obama plan but i never look at the negative but more as okay my portion of taxes will go towards obamas plan to help some kids go to college. people that will always be under even the 100k level are like minions crying socialist. even when i had nothing and actually even as a youth i always reputed people talking about the rich. i ask one simple question, do you ever want to be "rich"? and it always shut them up. however i always had a clear view of economics.
what's worse the dems with their tax and spend policy or the pubs with their cut and spend policy?
since i first knew what the national debt was i've been saying why don't they tax and cut spending. that would have done the job better than anything but now everything is screwed without a lot of work that could have been avoided long ago

The really interesting thing about this election is that it is generated accepted either

    1. America is ready to elect a black person as president and Obama will get elected. or
    2. America is no ready to elect a black person as president and Obama will not get elected.

But the reality is that the following is probably much closer to the truth.

    1. America is NOT ready to elect a black person as president but WILL elect Obama anyway. Perhaps they are so fed up with Bush that they will elect whoever is from the other party.

    2. America IS ready to elect a black person as president but will NOT elect Obama. Perhaps because of his liberal record.
