The passing of a friend...

As we get older time passes more quickly every year.

I think about an old friend and tell myself, "I should call them and arrange a get-together". And before I know it a year has passed.

Well, last Sunday I got "that" call.

A very old and dear friend had passed away the night before.

Long story short, he had an alcohol problem. And to compound the problem he had retired at 49 with a very nice income.

So, he had money and time on his hands.

He had no family to speak of. Never married.

He spent his time and money on Whiskey.

One day, he fell down the stairs and broke his back.

He died last Sunday morning.

He was smart. A programmer for the Ohio Department Of Transportation.
He was caring.
He was genuine.

I waited too long to make "the call". The one I kept meaning to make but didn't.

Now, I can't.

We are holding a wake for him next Saturday.
Not a mourning of his passing but, a celebration of his life.

I write this not for sympathy but to say:

Make that call!

"One-of-these-days" may be too late.

I'm really sorry for the loss of your friend.

Sometimes, life just plain sucks. There is no other way to put it.

It's good though that you're celebrating his life and not his death. I'm sure
he would have wanted it that way.

    Sorry about your friend.

I am sure he had lots of problems that he is free of now.

It's true - make the call - In view of lots of things, every time I talk to some people I realize this could be the last time we talk to each other - with a few I really want them to know that I cared about them if I never see them or hear from them again.

I had a few friends die in the last few years - good friends but remote. I felt bad because I never had a chance to say goodbye...

Friends move on. We don't always get back to our friends but always know that they are part of our lives if we do get back. That's what friendship is.

    Have a wonderful celebration.

The day before it happen the last thing he told me was, I'm going out of town for the weekend to go spend some of the money we have made. He was so happy......... so yes i agree make the call!

Wow....I get "that news" about 5 minutes ago about an old Navy buddy. The kicker is....I'm just 4 hours from his home right now and have been putting off stopping for a visit for almost 3 years.

You're right....TODAY is a good day to call an old friend and share a laugh or two. Tomorrow just may be too late.
