Got a site selling GPS? I'm looking for a gift

Hey all, it's my 25th anniversary this August, and I'm planning to get my hubby a GPS. He's wanted one for a while but isn't the kind to spend money on himself. (I, on the other hand, seem to have no problem with that...)

I don't know the first thing about them, so I wanted to find out if any Warriors have affiliate products or recommendations.

Just put GPS in the search - there are many models, also in the mapping section there's an awesome software that integrates maps and gps.
    Have fun.

I just heard on the radio that Wal-Mart has lowered the price of the best current iPhone model to $97 with a 2-year ATT contract. Just FYI.

(Probably because the next model is right around the corner)

    Hi Laura,

Most modern cell phones come with GPS. If your husband is anything like me he would prefer an 'integrated solution'. Just a thought!

I saw that at CNN's site - hoping he saw it too!

That's good to know, thanks! I have a very basic question, since as I said, I know nothing about them - are GPS's for your car and handheld GPS's, whether integrated with a phone or not - totally different animals?

Amazon has pretty good prices on GPS, I would recommend a Garmin Nuvi.

Kelly - since the link I gave you is affiliate, I sure would like to push one of those - but in truth, the favorite of the gem, gold, fossil hunting crowd is the GPS watches. No hassle to carry them, no losing them in a backpack or having to figure out another pocket for them -- just convenient as heck.

So, what you want for him is going to be dependent upon his lifestyle. You won't catch my crowd with cell phones out in the wilds. If all he needs it for is tooling around your average roadways, a phone might do for him - or a hand held, either one. Do note that actual handheld GPS systems have different features. Some have altimeters and weather features, some have heart-rate monitors, etc. - so you might want to look at each system's unique features before deciding which is best suited for the person you are giving it to.

I'm assuming you're talking mainly to me? Thanks for the further info. I suppose explaining how he would mostly use it would have helped! I'm thinking a car GPS is the way to go since we travel a lot. He's not so much into the wilderness stuff.

It would be nice to be able to use it both in the car and out, though; I'm going to do some research.

      Thanks, you guys!

oops, sorry, yes - to you. How you got from Laura the female to Kelly the guy in my head will just have to remain a mystery. It's been one of those days. Whatever you choose, I hope he loves it.

    Laura,

Apparently MOST popular companies make good models. Garmin, Magellan, Mio, and TomTom are supposed to be good and/or I know they are. But WATCH IT! I would recommend the following....

    1. Get one that speaks STREET NAMES! Today, that might cost like an extra $20, but it is WORTH IT!
    2. Try to get one that can be updated. I think MOST can be, but check.
    3. Getting a thin one(like less than 1" thick) is nice(movable and easy to store)
    4. Get IN DASH, or one that is easy to store, they are a HIGH THEFT ITEM, so ones that can be moved but hard to hide could be quickly stolen!
    5. Get one that has battery backup for say a couple hours.(Again, I think most DO)
    6. Get one with a nice first menu, that is easy to work with and can store several addresses. I think most CAN now.
    7. Get one that covers any area you want to see. Some only cover the lower 48 of the US, some ALSO cover alaska, puertorico, hawaii, and even canada, etc....
    8. Points of interest are nice, but SECONDARY! Don't just settle because one has more points of interest, BESIDES, many can UPDATE those!

BTW I have a garmin and a mio. I like the mio better because it is thinner, and has street names. Otherwise, they are BOTH nice. Garmin even has a site with APPS! I got one app, for example, that tells me if I am near a walmart or gas station!

I like the ones that you can click your starting point and it will track you so if you aren't watching where you are going all you have to do is watch your trail back to know you're headed back to the car.
