If you hold down your Ctrl key and use the scroll button (center) on your mouse - you can zoom your screen in/out.

Wow Andie! Thanks! Yet another thing that I can play with!

It's sort of like my computer binoculars!

OK, I have to check out my other computer I guess. It doesn't work with this dell. My eee CAN, for example, magnify an area if you hover over it for a time. To the best of my knowledge, the level of magnification isn't settable.

Doesn't work for me either, Steve - don't know if it's the xp pro or my intellimouse (the mouse may be too smart to do that trick).

Yes, I'm guessing it is more the mouse type than comp/OS...must not work on those ~fancy~ ones :p

Another way of doing the same thing is to hold down Ctrl and press + or - on the numeric keypad or the top row (Ctrl Shift + if you use the top row). It works with or without numlock.

It took a *****LONG***** time for this to finally start working. It isn't that efficient anyway. 8-(

It's a feature of certain applications, not the operating system. It only zooms the current application, and only if that application supports control-wheel zooming.
