something in its entirety if it sucks. Probably my harshest
treatment of a movie was years ago when I walked out after

I rented a movie this weekend and stopped watching after
about an hour. ZZZZZ. lol.

I did rent Book of Eli, with Denzel Washington, and it wasn't
bad.

I actually liked it. There were some interesting bits... ideas, mostly. Conceptual images and scene structures. Plot points. It was at least somewhat informed and instructed by the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

One of the drawbacks to hanging out with film students too much is that you catch that peculiar disease they have, where they watch movies on four different levels at once: as entertainment, as art, as craft, and as concept. It's extraordinarily rare for a movie to fail on all four levels, and if you go in perfectly satisfied for it to succeed on just one... it's actually hard not to enjoy a movie.

GEE, I watch a movie for TWO reasons....

1. ENTERTAINMENT
2. INFORMATION

Art and craft can affect that, but aren't generally required. The concept supports it, but WHO CARES?

Caliban, don't get me wrong, and I should have said this, I actually loved
the original movie for what it was...as a kid. It had great special effects
(for the time) an exciting finish, and Gene Barry, who I always liked,
even though he overacted like hell towards the end.

As entertainment, I loved it.

As a work of art, as you say watching it as a film student, it left a lot
to be desired. And the older I get, the worse the movie gets, sadly.

But I can still watch it and enjoy it because of the good in it.

But this remake...I can't find one thing to like about it, given that Tom
Cruise (outside of A Few Good Men) can't act his way out of a paper
bag.

I'm still in shock that he was as good in that movie as he was, even
though Nicholson stole the movie.

It's getting harder for me, as I get older, to enjoy movies that are not
well made, even if there is something about them that I would have liked
as a kid...especially sci fi stuff with special effects.

Years ago, that's all I would have needed to be entertained.

Today...it's a whole different story.

No sympathy at all for you. The movie sleeve/jacket would've quite clearly stated "starring Tom Cruise".

That was all the information you needed.

If you still watched the movie whilst knowing this, then you probably deserve to have 2 hours of your life taken from you.

Remember, always read the move jacket/sleeve/cover, and if it bears the words "Tom Cruise", avoid it like the plague.

You know it makes sense.

On a different note, the original WOTW was, and stiil is, the only movie to give me nightmares as a kid. Dom't know why, it just did.

The movie was sprinkled w/ a lot of cheese. However, I thought the visuals were superb on this movie. The way the bodies vaporized was just plain haunting. Watching these giant creatures and listening to their echoing noises brought me back to when I first watched godzilla as a kid. I thought it was a fun movie.

There were three War of the Worlds films released in 2005. One from The Asylum, the Spielberg version and one from Pendragon Pictures.

Of the first two, I think The Asylum version is actually the better one. (But skip the sequel.)

I haven't seen the Pendragon Pictures version.

Of the ones I've seen, I don't think any top the 1953 version.

Jonathan Waters was asked about remaking The Wizard of Oz and had a great response...He said we shouldn't remake good movies, it's the bad ones that need to be remade.

My least favorite Tom Cruise remake was Mission Impossible. That movie had nothing to do with the TV series except pulling off the fake faces. The best part of the TV show was the team work and executing the plan. The movie was nothing but Cruise being a one-man show.

The Ocean's 11 remake should have been Mission Impossible, and they should have left the original Ocean's 11 alone. Ocean's 11 was a great movie with a great ending (one of the best ever) that was left out of the remake. Why remake a movie and leave out the best part?

It's just so easy to be disappointed by remakes. Think about it. The only reason Hollywood makes a remake is because the original was so very successful. That nearly guarantees that the remake will be lacking in at least some ways compared to the original.

Most sci-fi movies try to make up for that through modern special effects, but a lousy script with lousy acting and great special effects is still a lousy movie.

I actually enjoyed the War of the World remake. I even watched it a second time. I do agree, however, that in every way except (perhaps) special effects, the original movie was superior. Actually, even the special effects were pretty spectacular for a 1953 film!

I couldn't agree more....I am sick of these CGI, ancy specail effect movies that are pure crap. 2012, Rise of the Cobra, Independence day, Indy 4, etc...

I watch Paranormal activity...4 actors, no special effects as such..but what a creepy movie.

Come on Hollywood...it's the story that comes first.
