Lakers win - and the crowd turns into a mob destroying cars, starting fires, etc.

And two guest talking heads (from California) blame the problem on the police (said they should have "expected a riot") and on the vendors at the game who sold beer.

Apparently no blame left over for the young idiots who decided to destroy anything they felt like destroying. In fact, one of the guests actually said the police effort to find the rioters could be racism. Now THAT's a stretch.

This one could be interesting as the police are actively trying to identify (including posting the video so anyone who has seen these people on facebook, etc can id them) and prosecute every face on that video.

Really funny when you see parts of the video where the idiots are posing for the camera as they kick in a car windshield, etc.

Kay - I've been in CA now for a few months........and I'm not in Kansas anymore, Toto. I've been in about 38 states - and this doesn't resemble the rest of the US at all from any angle. It's a whole different country.

So what city are you in? Many parts of california aren't THAT different from similar areas elsewhere. By that, I mean that venice beach looks more like lets say the jersey shore than kansas, and bodfish looks more like kansas tan the jersey shore. And malibu BEACH looks NOTHING like malibu canyon. As for the people, bodfish, calabassas, hollywood, etc... can be very different from one another.

I'm in Stockton, Steve. And NO - California isn't the same as anywhere - some of the scenery isn't that different but everything else is just foreign.

Well - some of the scenery is a bit different from the North - for instance, we have some nice lush gardens here and some nice normal trees, but if you look over the fence to the end of the road there are palm trees towering over everything. Strange feeling seeing those when looking around a garden that would make you think you are in W. WA or OR, LOL, but then you get palm trees in Florida, too. Maybe TX, but I've never been there.

Now before anyone jumps me -- I didn't say I hate the people here. Conversely I've met some rather entertaining personalities and am often having a pretty good time. I have also found if you meet the RIGHT people you can find open land that the general population knows nothing about.

But it's still different -- there is an Ethos here that I've not seen anywhere else in this country.

Sal, you're in the central valley which is huge and largely conservative farmland. If you get to SF, LA and other coastal areas and hang around for a while you will really see a different "ethos".

Just another of the many reasons you will not find me in SF or LA or any of the large metropolitan coastal areas. I don't "do" metropolitan. And I'm sure from some of what you know about my ideologies - I don't really think I'd fit in any to safely.

What I like is small town E. and Northern. Still different - but I love the areas with gold history - always have. Lived in most predominant gold centers of CO and loved it there, too.

You can keep anywhere with more than a half mil people. I won't go there. Period.

I can fit in but I don't want to. Give me farmland any day, a patch of woods and a little house far away from other houses and I'd be in heaven.

Half million people is about 450,000 too many for my taste.

It's bigger than I'd live in or too near but I will go to a city of half a mil or less if I need to do any serious shopping - in and gone back to the 10,000 or less is the way I like it. I have lived in towns of 200 - 300 a few times and those were my favorites.

Lakers win - and the crowd turns into a mob destroying cars, starting fires, etc.
Happens occasionally in Detroit when the Pistons win or lose a big series. ISTR the same thing in Chicago with the Bulls. Oakland and the Raiders come to mind. And Montreal saw at least one instance of it with the Canadiens, but I don't recall if they won or lost that time.

So no, it's not just CA.

And not just the USA...Watch the soccer fans. They even have their own word: "hooligans". Whenever I hear how violent the US is, I always think of the soccer fans around the World...Our sports fans aren't nearly as violent.

California is the most diverse state there is. For people to pidgeon-hole the entire state is really narrow-minded. It runs 800 miles from N to S, basically the distance from Florida to NY, and for every Hollywood you have a Hollister and every Berkley a Barstow.

You're right, Kurt - and I've seen picture of places in Northern California that I'd probably enjoy.

I guess I don't understand the sports fan mentality that leads to destruction of property and hurting people. Probably has to do with the mentality of an excited crowd more than with sports.

What caught my attention was the use of the videos loaded on social sites in an effort to identify the perps (always wanted to use that word). If it works, next time the marauding fans will be hiding their faces instead of mugging for the cameras.

I feel a tinge defensive about the stereo typing and bigotry of this topic, having lived in Northern California all of my life, but at the same time I am pretty disgusted with it and really want to leave. Just don't know where to go that would be any better - at this point our worst problems appear to be country-wide.

Yeh, it's political and I don't suppose because I am equally disgusted with left. right and center makes it any better for me to comment at all. It's a moot point anyway.

I am just glad we came here when I was 3 and I didn't have to grow up in Ohio where I was born. California has been a good and beautiful place as long as you don't talk to anybody. lolololol. Just kidding about that I think...

Most of the weirdos here came from other states and countries. So very few people I have ever met that were born here makes you wonder what is in the water.

    Anyway lay off - lol.

      Pat -

Ohio's a good place to be from (personal experience)

From what others say - doesn't sound like it a CA problem but a sports "event" that is country wide.

I agree with your sentiments - after reading a thread about "where you would choose to live" I finally realized my answer was "somewhere else". Have no idea where, though.

I live about 15 to 20 minutes from Staples center and I like it here. It is very diverse. I moved to the Poconos in PA a couple years ago and only lasted a week before going insane from everything and everyone seeming like they were the same. I guess I like the diversity found here.
