NBA Warrior that is.

Manute was 7'7" and weighed only 225 pounds. Because of his great length and skills he was able to become one of the great shot blockers in NBA history. However, perhaps what I remember most about him as a player was his three point shooting. The Warriors coach Don Nelson gave him the green light on three pointers and he took it. He had one of the strangest looking three shots ever but when he made them the crowd in Oakland would go nuts. Later, in one game with the 76ers he made 6 of 12 three pointers in a half!

Manute probably can be called the best shot blocker in NBA history because of these stats:

* First in career blocks per 48 minutes (8.6), almost 50% beyond second-place Mark Eaton (5.8)
* Second in career blocks-per-game average (3.34)
* Fourteenth in total blocked shots (2,086)

He also was a great guy and humanitarian, always trying to help others including his war ravaged home country Sudan.

Manute helped make the phrase "my bad" popular.

Manute was only 47. :-(

Funeral will be this coming Tueday in DC and I would go if I could.

Here is Manute in action blocking shots and making his crazy looking threes which the fans loved ( when he made them )

With his son at the end:

Here's his ex team mate Charles Barkley pulling a prank on Manute:

    What a bummer, Tim.

My deepest condolences to the world for a great loss.

    What did he die from?

    RIP Manute...

Bol died from acute kidney failure and complications from Stevens-Johnson syndrome. You see him in a bed in a couple of those videos. The one with his son is sad.

My favorite Manute story is when NBA experts questioned Bol's "courage". They had to be reminded that since Bol killed a lion with a spear while growing up in Sudan, he probably wasn't afraid of basketball players.

The last time I saw Manute was in a celebrity boxing match against Refrigerator Perry. Manute won easily.

This is truly sad news. The guy was a force to be reckoned with.

The good die young all right.

** EDIT ** Sadly, I had completely forgotten about him.

Of course my memory is shot.

      When did he play Tim?

I just looked up his career at Wiki. Don't remember any of it.

Man, where the hell was I?

Admittedly, I started to lose interest in basketball after the Knicks/Heat
playoff of, I think it was 1999, but hell, who remembers. Maybe somebody
here can fill me in. But during Manute's career, I was very much into the
        game still.

Guess there are a lot of players I probably don't remember.

Getting old just plain sucks sometimes.

Maybe you don't remember him because he played for the Warriors on the west coast for a few years. They made the playoffs one year with him I believe but besides that he wasn't on good teams and didn't start. He only averaged 18 minutes a game.

Bol was a great shot blocker, but that's really all he could do. A great line was that Bol was the only player in history that could stop the offense at BOTH ends of the court.

Yeah, he was very limited. He had bad hands, couldn't run fast, wasn't a good passer etc... At least he could make some free throws. The Warriors center last year, Biedrins, had the all time low free throw %. This summer the Warriors are making him work with Rick Barry and shoot free throws underhand which Barry made at over 90%. If he doesn't want to shoot underhand he won't play according to Nelson. I think that's a good way to go.

Rick Barry was absolutely one of the greatest free throw shooters of all
time if not the greatest. I remember him from the ABA back in the early 70s.

I actually learned to shoot free throws from watching him because I
couldn't shoot an overhand free throw to save my life.

And in a coincindence, both the tallest player to ever play in the NBA (Bol) and the shortest ever (Mugsey Bogues) were both drafted by the Washington Bullets in the same year:

He played for my local pro team - when they were called the bullets.

I saw a lot of him and remember some local kids created a rap song about him.

I'm sorry to see him go.
