I can cook but don't do much any more. I'm not a great cook but in my younger years was a line cook and can cook the basic stuff you'd find on a menu like Denny's (except for eggs). I can use a chef's knife well and can make some basic sauces, flip stuff in a saute pan, but I am far from a gourmet.

I only really cook about once or twice a week and will make a big "pot" of something that I can eat for a couple of days...But I really don't really cook a meal more often than that. I like to cook but hate doing dishes.

    We cook a lot.

Mostly with rice and wild weeds in the summer.

Gives us great content and focus on our Wild Edible Plants site at Native Eyes

I figure, if I am going to cook, I might as well cook healthy, keep it simple (rice cooker and weeds) and use it to support a money maker of ours.

I was raised cooking and eating farm food in the midwest. Later I worked with people from around the world and learned from them, as my son said, "to cook in several languages".

One convenience food I love is Manwich - but I make my own version by adding several additional ingredients. The only dessert I still make is the occasional key lime pie (because I love it) or strawberry shortcake with loads of coolwhip (one of the greatest inventions ever!).

I like leftovers and hate cleanup so I always cook enough food either for a couple days or to freeze for later. I've tried take out and eating out and convenience foods but I always go back to cooking myself. I don't eat a lot but I like good food.

I wouldn't say I'm a gourmet chef, but I like to cook a few things. Also, I'm a better cook than my ever-loving wife, but I don't complain.

She needs a recipe to cook most things, and I'm more of a "throw this and that together" kind of cook. Most of the time it turns out pretty well.

    Dang it!

    Now I'm hungry!

I have a degree in Culinary Arts.
I have also worked every station in a Kitchen from one time or another.
When I was the cold foods chef at the Albany Country Club I also sat on the board of directors for the capital district chapter of the American Culinary Federation. So yes I can cook
Living alone now I don't really cook very often.
But I still dig the hell out of grabbing totally different ingredients and making them work together.

I can throw a turkey burger on a frying pan. Other than that, you don't
want me cooking unless you either have a death wish or are starving.

I guess if push came to shove, I could learn to make basic stuff if I had
a cookbook. I'm good at following directions. My problem is not really being
able to tell when stuff is done. Even when I fry a burger, I have to ask my
wife if it's done yet. I'm getting better though. I'm noticing that at a certain
flame, if I turn it every 1 minute, after about 10 minutes, it's done.

      No, I'm no cook.

You should really learn to cook. You won't have to go to restaurants and eat fast food.
Cooking is a survival skill, one you will use your entire life. Besides, when you cook your meals, you know what is in your food. no mystery ingredients or trans fat. Why not give it a shot.

I cook everyday. Nothing special, just decent meals. I got into the habit several years ago when money was especially tight.

The problem with cooking is that you become aware of the price of groceries. What I mean is, it spoils going to all but the best restaurants. You just can't bring yourself to pay ten bucks for bowl of pasta or whatever, that you could make yourself for 25 cents.

I'm considered a good cook - my mother used to entertain several times a month and I started learning how to work a kitchen as soon as I was able to help carry things out to the dining room and set the table.

Mr2020 - me, too. LOL. When I go walking in the summer, I graze. I eat just about anything edible when I'm somewhere I know I don't have to worry about things being sprayed.

Thom - there are wild black raspberries out here to the extent you wouldn't even believe -- acres and acres. There were enough ripe that I just made my first black/raspberry, buckwheat pie. We all ate Canaberries, and an hour later had a big hunk of warm pie ala mode -- ya know, life doesn't get much better than that.

Cooking is very low on my totem pole. If I didn't have to eat, I wouldn't do it. So I go for simple things that I can throw on and leave to finish on its own, like boiled potatoes, frozen veggies, and a piece of frozen, prepared fish.

Even that is too much work for me. I prefer things I can toss into a dish and shove in the oven, like frozen fries and a few pieces of frozen fish.

I miss a lot of meals because I can't be bothered to cook. That's when I like to have fresh lettuce and a few salad items on hand to toss onto a plate with Caesar dressing and, if I'm lucky, garlic bread that I bought already prepared.

At one time, many years ago, I tried cooking real recipes - that was when I was first married. It seemed like a fun thing to do, taking care of my husband and our home. That novelty quickly wore off. I did try some recipes from a book, but most never tasted right.

The only recipes I've succeeded with are:

      - Chili (and I even mess that up sometimes, but when I get it right, it's great)

      - Hamburger mash. No real recipe. Just stuff thrown together. It's my own mixture of leftovers consisting of hamburger, Kraft dinner, and anything else I might have left that "fits" the theme. Add spices to flavor (basil, salt, pepper, garlic powder [cloves take more work], onion and sometimes green peppers when I have them and a can of tomatoes). Over the top, I lay slices of cheese, cover to melt, and eat. This ALWAYS turns out great! And it's an excellent way to get a week of meals from two meals, at an incredible price. AND, it's nutritious!

Other than that, I don't cook and really don't enjoy it.

      Sylvia

Love to cook. Been doing it since I was old enough to watch my mother.

Like Kurt, I enjoy the big pot 'o stuff and make many meals out of it.

I am also the cook in my house. My wife CAN cook, but she doesn't like to, so she pretends like she can't. But I'm on to her game

    I also LOVE grilling.

Steven - a hamburger in a frying pan? Wow, I haven't done that in MANY years! I hope that it's at least a cast iron frying pan?

My mother used to make shell steaks in a cast iron pan - with butter of course. That was many moons ago.

In the summer, I make whatever I can on the grill, including veggies, meatloaf, french fries, etc.

    Man, now I'm hungry...

I find something very or seem to be, an oddity.

Usually , one associates cooking with mom, auntie, grandma, housewife, etc.

But why is it you find most of the Chefs or Top cookers in the world are men, and maybe more of them than women?

I did a small survey of dudes I know, and I was shocked at who not only liked cooking, but loved cooking , pretty much as a hobby.

Even dudes that are "firecrackers", high metabolism, impatient , you could say borderline #@%holes, who say cooking "relaxes" them, go figure. One guy even takes 6 hours to make his sauce and meatballs..., this dude I would have bet my right arm and left eye he would not have the patience.

Because I associate cooking with a certain amount of patience.

These guys, if you notice and do a survey yourself, sound and describe cooking EXACTLY like guys who love fishing and the reasons why.

With fishing, I know there is something about being around water , us being 80%+ composed of water, but beyond that, don't get fishing either.

Except for the taste of fresh caught and cooked fish that simply cannot be duplicated.

It is SOOOOOOOO homemade that I picked the berries this morning - organic, wild juicy berries- 3 pies for us, and one to take to a bbq we're going to in a few hours, and a few cupcake size tarts with the left over dough and berry mix --- tomorrow morning it's french toast topped with vanilla ice cream and black raspberries.

And of course it was wild clover and plantain while I was letting the dog swim in the lake while taking a break from picking.

And my aunt, my mom's sister, was the dessert maker. My mouth waters when I think of the delicious meals we had back in the day. I miss those times.

I like to experiment and usually only follow a recipe if I have to bake a dessert. I really like making healthy, hearty meals, and use fresh ingredients whenever possible. I love the fall because I can use the fresh vegetables out of our garden...

I've never succeeded with chocolate pudding either. However, there's a dairy-free brand here in the UK called Alpro (sounds like Swiss dog food, I know) that does soya-milk puddings. They taste nearer to the real deal than any of my homemade attempts.

I moved from Dallas to New Orleans. Never was much for experimenting with a lot of new tastes until the food here got into my soul. Whew, within one year after moving I had gained about fifty pounds. To make matters worse, or indeed better, I fell in love with a woman who is, without a doubt, the best cook I have ever known. Life is so sweet.

Her fantastic cooking has definitely spurred me on to learn about cooking, yet she won't even eat my scrambled eggs. Being in this part of Louisiana has really made me appreciate eating food close to the source, I try to eat as little processed food as possible. As an update, I have lost 45 of those fifty pounds .

I cook Chinese food every day. Every day... Basically you fry whatever in peanut oil with ginger, garlic, green onion, chopped dry chili, and soy sauce (light soy sauce, not dark). Sometimes a drop of prickly ash oil (aka Sichuan pepper), perhaps a bit of sesame oil to taste. With meat, cut it in small cubes and fry as described. With marinated tofu (extra firm), fry as decribed. With kong xin cai (keep forgetting what it's called in English), fry as described. With bamboo shoots and chicken, fry as described. For gong bao ji ding (think it's called something like General Tso's chicken), add cashew nuts to chicken, and fry as described.

(I cook it for my wife, then prepare Kraft macaroni for myself)

My specialty- balsamic, honey-glazed chicken wings garnished with toasted sesame seeds and cilantro-ranch dressing.

I like doing dishes. The old fashioned way in the sink. There is something relaxing about it. I prefer to clean after myself, though, because I clean as I go. I hate cleaning after someone who destroys the entire kitchen when they cook.

I know why I can cook. First of all we had simple recipes to make in my Blue Bird book. And when I wanted an Easy Bake Oven, my mother said, "no way". Instead I was cooking in the real kitchen from the time I was a tot. I started with food prep. And later helped with dinner.

But my real love is baking. I baked beside my mother and both my grandmothers but I am the one who has the touch for it.

Oh and I like to do the laundry too.

My favorite cooking method is to walk into someone else's kitchen, comb the cupboards, fridge, freezer and spice rack, and use whatever I find to create an impressive (pseudo-gourmet) meal.
When it's successful (which is usually), the reaction is, "I didn't even know I had this in the house!"

Just tried a chicken and dumpligs recipe from the food network website. DIdn't turn out as well as I liked, but everyone that tried it said it was great. ( Too thin for me,it didn't thicken up like I think chicken and dumplings should,It was more "soupy").
Next is an apple pie. Will report back in a coupld of hours!

I just called for a pizza. Does that count?

Seriously I can cook and I can't imagine anyone who can't. I have a basic repertoire of repeat items but I can also change it up with a recipe.

Like the OP, I like to make plenty for leftovers. Cook once. Clean once. Eat several times.

I seem to spend half of my life cooking, whether I want to or not. On our more congested evenings I end up cooking three evening meals at different times.

I do like cooking but sometimes it can end up being a bit of a chore.

I seem to be able to cook fairly well.

Just cooked a pork chop dinner (or tea as we often call it here in Yorkshire) tonight for my family and my grandma, which seemed to go down well.

I can do all the popular British fare quite well.. cooked dinners, stews and what not. I can also do Indian curries (love me some Indian! Friends refer to me sometimes as the curry monster).

Haven't yet really branched out to attempting the sort of extravagant dishes like those they prepare on Masterchef and what not, but I fully intend to in the near future.

In any case, I can't really be doing with small piddly portions. No matter how rich the food is, I need piles of it. If NASA is interested in conducting some close-up research into black holes, they should know that I have one in my stomach.

Wouldn't know it to look at me, though... I'm approx 6' 2" tall, and yet only weigh 10.5 stone. How I actually wish I could put on some weight.
