Formaldehyde: Is It Really That Deadly? Or Just Another Tree Hugger Hoax???

From Several News Stories...

Several years ago, the state of California, through the California Air Resources Board (CARB), announced that it was moving toward new regulations dramatically limiting ...

...the emissions of formaldehyde by wood composites and engineered wood panels used in the manufacture of housing.

The companies making the formaldehyde-emitting resins shrieked.

The wood composites manufacturers freaked.

An advertising blitz downplaying the problem was immediately launched. But, in the end, CARB prevailed and in 2007 they passed the new legislation.

Phase One went into effect January 1st of this year and Phase Two which lowers allowable emission rates follows in 2011.

Because the California market is so huge and because they generally lead the way on health and environmental legislation,...

... manufacturers of the types of materials that are polluting the Katrina trailers have had to make big changes across the board (no pun intended.)

In other words, they don't just make a product for California because it's not practical.

They've changed ALL of their operations.

The resin companies have responded (despite all their complaining beforehand)...

... by reformulating their resins to contain scavengers that prevent formaldehyde emissions, another example of regulatory efforts forcing innovation that likely wouldn't have occurred otherwise.

On June 2nd, the EPA released a "draft human health assessment for formaldehyde that focuses on evaluating the potential toxicity of inhalation exposures to this chemical".

The EPA has concluded that formaldehyde is carcinogenic when inhaled by humans.

Public concern...

...about the substance grew dramatically in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when many people living in FEMA trailers after the storm reported respiratory and other health problems from prolonged exposure to formaldehyde.

"There is sufficient evidence of a causal relationship between formaldehyde exposure and cancers of the upper respiratory tracts, ...

...with the strongest evidence for nasopharyngeal and sino-nasal cancers," the draft assessment made public on Wednesday concludes.

"There is also sufficient evidence of a causal association between formaldehyde exposure and lymphohematopoietic cancers, with the strongest evidence of Hodgkin's lymphoma and leukemia, particularly myleloid leukemia.

Senator Klobuchar's bill, signed into law last week, closely emulated the CARB legislation, effectively making the California law a national one.

YES, it is deadly! Isn't that a GIVEN? When I was in school, they told us to avoid direct exposure, limit it, etc... It is used to PRESERVE tissue for display and future examinations. So it is BAD!

BUT, WHO CARES!?!?!? I HATE the stench, and can't breath well around it, and people have gotten headaches, light headed, and distorted vision from it. in the 70s, almost 40 YEARS ago, california required companies to put warning stickers on RVs, etc.... if they contained urea-formaldehyde resin!

HECK, I have been talking about this since OVER 40 years ago!

Yes, TL, it's a nasty. Google the MSDS for it.

To help those along with what Ken said,
MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet.

And sorry TL, but to asnwer your question, there is no such thing as a "tree hugger hoax".
By definition a hoax is an intentional deceit. Most people that fall into what you call "the tree-hugger" category are people very sincere in their beliefs.

If you wish to discuss hoax, see government.

Enjoy your formaldehyde in you soft drinks.
    Mmmm mighty tasty.

Some where I read that the Gulf War Syndrome may be partly due to storing soft drinks in the extreme heat where the artificial sweeteners turned into even nastier drinks.

Upon ingestion, aspartame breaks down into natural residual components, including aspartic acid, phenylalanine, methanol,[25] and further breakdown products including formaldehyde[26] and formic acid, accumulation of the latter being suspected as the major cause of injury in methanol poisoning.

Soft drinks as wiith most other "foods" have thing the body is not meant to ingest in the name of profit.

Its funny how much people complain about the "sugar" in soft drinks, yet most don't have sugar at all,and havent since the 70s.

Oh, and while I'm ranting, it amazes me how people with choose a "low calory sweetener" instead of using less real sweetener and/or eating healthier.

This is why I do NOT drink soft drinks.

Well, ONCE in a while I will treat myself to an IBC Cream Soda, but it's rare.

I drink mostly water (filtered), iced tea (no sweeteners at all) and coffee (also no sweeteners). I am sure the caffeine does me no good, but hey - it's my last vice Already gave up smoking (11 years ago), drugs and alcohol.

      Most drinks DO have sugar!!!!!!!

      Sugars (g) 28

      Ingredients
CARBONATED WATER, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CARAMEL COLOR, SUGAR, PHOSPHORIC ACID, CAFFEINE, CITRIC ACID, NATURAL FLAVOR
In the example above, do you REALLY think it has 28 grams of "sugar"? I mean it SAYS it does, right!?!?!? NO WAY! It would have to have a ridiculous amount of caramel color, and costs would SKYROCKET! The "sugar" refers NOT only the beet/cane "SUGAR", but the HFCS sugar indicated earlier. YEP, sugar goes by a LOT of names! From wikipedia:

Sugar is an informal term for a class of edible crystalline carbohydrates, mainly sucrose, lactose, and fructose[1] characterized by a sweet flavor. In food, sugar almost exclusively refers to sucrose, which primarily comes from sugar cane and sugar beet. Other sugars are used in industrial food preparation, but are usually known by more specific names--glucose, fructose or fruit sugar, high fructose corn syrup, etc.

    Same here Mike.
For me its Sodas, an occasional IBC Root Beer ( I might have to try their cream soada some day).
Occasionally some sugar sweetened ice tea.
I used to have 2,sometimes 3 cups of coffee (with about a tablespoon of 1/2&1/2) in the morning, but now due to my liquid intake restrictions instead I will make myself 2 double shot of expresso to get me going.

On extra special days I will actually buy myself one at Starbucks.

I never knew soft drinks contain formaldehyde. Good thing I
only drink them once in a great while.

Maybe that's why someone I once knew had so many health
problems. This person drank an entire 12 pack of diet pepsi
every single day of every week. She did that for years, and
then began having problems doctors couldn't diagnose. They
finally decided she had lyme's disease, I think. But I don't
    believe anyone was ever sure.

      Ken
They CAN test for lyme disease now, although it is apparently often easy to cure, EVEN BY ACCIDENT. Once cured, you can't determine they had it, to the best of my knowledge, but MOST symptoms REMAIN, even if they don't generally progress further.

The formaldehyde is one of the metabolites of aspartame. And they are more likely to occur if the product was ever over a certain temperature. When called on it, monsanto basically said that they never sold it for use in baked goods, though that was a bit after they started packaging it for such. Heck, even putting it in coffee as a sweetner. Still, MOST people say "everything in moderation" and all that. You can sue a person if you dog laps up antifreeze they have there, but it is OK for them to offer your child a drink with the same sort of stuff. 8-(

My secret tweet is to hit Dunk'n Dounuts once every 3 weeks for 1 Boston creme and 1 maple frosted and a large coffee with lots of cream and 4 sugars.

I tried to do it every week but the wife started complaining, so now it's once every 3 weeks as a compromise.

I drink lots of water each day and some type of juice with my meals.

Paul Neman's Grape Juice or Apple Juice.

I have been a victim of Mcdonalds' Sweet Iced Tea and have forced myself to stay away from it.

Only 1 this month so far.
