I looked at some research recently which shows that if you have a U.S. company that exports widgets that it is your responsibility to make sure that your widgets are not used in a country or by a group that has sanctions against it.

If you sell a product to a supplier and it ends up in illegal hands and OFAC finds out about it, they give harsh penalties and can cause your company to have a bad reputation.

On the other hand, if you use a product that comes from an illegal country there are penalties as well.

That has been the case for a LONG time! I am ONLY in the US, so legal transport of foreign contraband that is legal in the US is OK! The US USED to have a law that computers past a certain level(To non friendy countries, such as the USSR ) and encryption past a certain level(EVEN to friendly countries like the UK or australia, canada, etc....), transported from the US to a foreign country was ILLEGAL! In fact, it was a FELONY! Well, The clinton administration, as I recall, made that LEGAL! So I guess I am safe!

Of course, I HAVE thought about getting into supplements. If I do, to protect my interests, and out of respect, I couldn't transport some products to other countries(including CANADA), EVEN though the US allows it, and they are legal in the US and recognized as safe. All the same, I don't think I would want to ANYWAY! ALSO, I couldn't transport some products FROM other countries though recognized as safe and THEY allow it because the US doesn't. AGAIN, I doubt that affects ME!

SOME things, like some US wood to canada, are illegal, but they wouldn't sell well in canada ANYWAY! c'est la vie!

Thankfully, I provide services, and not products. That being said, I believe the installation of a SSL certificate would qualify as exporting technology (encryption). I don't believe I've ever done work on a server that's in a country with sanctions, though.
