The first scariest movie for me was Poltergeist. Alien and Aliens 2 would be next, and then there's Evil Dead, a B-Movie. The teenage slash flicks like Halloween and Friday the 13th are great popcorn movies. Classics like Prince of Darkness, Howling, and Night of the Living Dead are essentials. Some of the Japanese remaked movies for US consumption like The Ring, The Grudge, Shutter, and The Echo are good movies too.

Yeah, the beginning was very slow but the last quarter was absolutely disturbing. Last scary movie I've seen was The Orphanage, it was great. All throughout the movie I had this unsettling feeling, definitely scary stuff...

Haven't seen The Orphanage, but the audition had me the same way..... an unsettling feeling. So hard to explain.

One of the best for me would be The Omen. The Exorcism of Emily Rose has great cinematography for a good scare just like the Exorcism. John Carpenter's Thing was definitely one of the greatest in it's time. Blairwitch Project would have been better if not for the dizzy cinematography. Other notable movies would be M Knight's Signs and The Sixth Sense, Body Snatchers, Night of the Creeps (B-Movie), and Final Destination.

Exorcist - This movie has been copied so much over the years that it lost some of it's original fright if you watch it now...But at that time, it was the scariest thing I've ever seen.

I'll toss in The Shining, because I live close to the mountain hotel where Steven King locked himself in a room for the winter to write it, almost going crazy himself.

I was just reading The Chicago Film Critics Association's top 100 Scariest Movies of All Time. Here is their top 10:

    1. "Psycho"

    2. "The Exorcist"

    3. "Halloween"

    4. "Alien"

    5. "Night of the Living Dead (1968)"

    6. "Jaws"

    7. "The Shining"

    8. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)"

    9. "Dawn of the Dead (1978)"

    10. "Rosemary's Baby"

I think Jaws scared everyone of us... when it first came out, everyone was afraid of sharks :p

Ohhhh I LOVE scary movies! But which was the best? That's such a hard question.

I loved the Sixth Sense - a real mind spin. The Hellraiser series was also quite a mind spin. The Others was also a pretty good jolt.

I think scare factor is a pretty personal thing. The skeletons in our closets aren't always the bones of the same creature. The mind twisters are the ones that get me.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was definitely scary. I haven't seen the original 1974 version though. I'm guessing that would be even scarier.

The scariest movie I've watched would have to be "The Descent".

My son-inlaw wouldn't even watch it. Good movie!

Didn't care for the strangers.....like most horror movies today, it was all blood and guts and no real story.

There are very few directors that can make a good horror story now.
