Here's the slide show if you're interested...

I'm not supporting the list one way or the other.

I thought some folks may find it interesting, entertaining and enlightening - I did.

Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Besides, who cares how these guys are rated in history?

    Does it matter?

I guess it's okay as far as entertainment goes, but even as entertainment,
    it wasn't that entertaining.

I found the piece pompous to say the least.

Oh well, that's 5 minutes of my life I'm not getting back.

What an interesting concept for a book. Did you notice he's promoting his book about 50 overrated people in history?

It's negative and cynical which people LOVE. I've always admired Edison but if he came up with the ideas and had his engineers do the actual work under his company/watch he still should get credit.

There is one guy who invented the post-it, scotch tape, etc. but they worked for 3M so the company gets the glory, their logo on the products, and bulk of the money. The world also needs employees.

ANYONE could come up with vague ideas. Heck, look at the jetsons, a space ship type car that has a tube based transport system, and folds up into a little briefcase! I guess if someone ever managed to create such a thing the jetsons storyboard guy would get the credit, huh? The apple, and even the IBM PC, weren't new ideas either! HECK, the robot wasn't EITHER! The radio, electricity, etc weren't. The matter->power->matter converter isn't either! The new world order wasn't, etc... The time machine, forcefield, invisibility *, interdimensional transportation, gee, just look at cartoons, scifi, and horror.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolis_(film)

AMAZING how little has REALLY changed, if you think about it!

There is a rumor, that some say is myth, that a guy once said "Everything that can be invented has been invented."! He wanted the US patent office SHUT DOWN! WHY is that news? Because he was Charles H. Duell was the commissioner of the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 1899!

Well, I guess by your definition, he was RIGHT!

I was saying the opposite. Ideas are just ideas. I used to work for the company that "invented" the pacemaker. It was actually a doctor who asked the company if this could be done. And the company engineers did all work of taking it from concept to reality the first pacemaker was created.

It might be a single person that came up with the idea for the post-in note but 3M gave them the tools, resources, and times to develop the actual post-it note then they went and marketed and sold the hell out of it. If that's what Edison did I see no reason to diss him. The stuff about pay wages is another issue.

I watched a documentary about Michael Moore yesterday which revealed how he lied, or at least bent the truth, in many of his films in order to prove a point. But regardless of whether he lied or not, or how often he did so, I think the main purpose of his docs were to get an idea out.

And that's what the purpose of this slideshow may have been.

I'm not sure about a few of them, but I know for a fact that Christopher Columbus got beaten to America by:

-the Vikings (by 100's of years)
-Native Americans (by who knows how long)
-the Chinese (by roughly 50 years)
-Moor fisherman (by 100's of years)

...and who knows, I may have missed someone.

Native americans could be disputed. Does anyone REALLY know where they came from or if they even really came? I heard they supposedly walked, when the continents were together.

Wow. You'll argue anything, even if you have no clue.

Yes, if you dig into the genetic research, you will find that it is possible to tell which Asian peoples the North American Indian tribes are descended from. The prevailing belief, as I understand it, is that they arrived overland, crossing a land bridge between what is now called Siberia and what is now called Alaska.

If you accept the Hopi stories of a Great Migration, for which there is some archaeological evidence, they traveled the width of North America and the full length from northern Canada to the tip of South America. Not everyone accepts those stories, but the fact is, the Americas were populated by aboriginal tribes well before Columbus ever thought about sailing across the seas.

The Hopi settlement at Oraibi has been continuously inhabited since somewhere between 800 and 1100 AD. Definitely falls into the category called "pre-Columbian," yes?

You state that the prevailing theory is the one I gave!

I didn't say they were not here FIRST, I was basically saying that they just happened here. It wasn't like the others that were probably LOOKING for someplace new.

They were NOMADIC, following food, etc... and ended up on what ended up being a new continent.

The ancient lore talks of a vision some guy had about golden arches and
            value meals.

            Seriously, nothing more to it.

Just to get off topic, have you been in one of those "golden arches" type places lately? Ray Kroc would roll over in his grave at what they have become.

In their heyday you would walk in and they would have 4 cash registers with a smiling face at each one ready to help you.
Nowadays you walk in and they funnel you into two lines with only one register open and running. The order, even though its taken and transmitted on a computer will have a high probability of being wrong.
And instead of any food being freshly cooked its precooked and microwaved to order.
McDonalds has become the opposite of its core foundation.

Interesting quote Steve, what is the source? Now I admit CNN was not on hand when folks crossed the Barring Straight land mass that connected Asia and North America at the end of the last Ice Age, but there are significant genetic, archeology, and oral histories that recount this journey.

The same can be said for part of the pacific coast for Polynesian migration via reed ships - and Thor Hyderdal proved back in the 70s I think - that people could sail from Polynesia to South America in a reed ship.

Guess I'm asking if these theories are false then how did the First Ones get here? Or are there other theories on how they got here that I'm not aware of...

        best,

Seems like Chris made a few deals too many.

After his 4th voyage Chris was brought back to Spain in chains by the Spanish because of double -dealings with the Portuguese.

Napoleon is on my list. He had too many losses to be considered great.

He lost his navy while in Egypt. He lost a few 100,000 men in a catostrophic loss to the Russians. And he lost to Wellington at Waterloo.

At the same time, Wellington was undefeated. He beat Napoleon's troops in Portugal (Napoleon wasn't there at the time) and won a number of campaigns in India.

    And...Wellington beat Napoleon at Waterloo.

Wellington never lost and beat Napoleon heads up. Napoleon had three major losses and lost directly to Wellington, yet all we hear today is about Napoleon...

Napolean is remembered for being little or short as the term Napolean complex comes into play that is the big reason why in my book.

    Kimw,

I'll SPARE you rumors I have heard from people that say they have worked there. I eat at such places for the same reason I now fly delta! There is often no better choice.

As for ray kroc, etc... I think the original mcdonalds brothers had more to do with keeping things running smoothly. Ray krok basically just franchised it. Oh, he packed up the mcdonalds advice, etc... nice and neat and created hamburger university, but the mcdonalds started it and originally demanded it.

It's all six sigma, black belt whatever they're called. Brutal
efficiency and every drop of blood squeezed out of it.

About once a year I stop at a McDelta. Don't ask me why. I
have no idea. Maybe it's the urge to give my body a different
    kind of challenge. lol

It's always the same one near where I live. I don't know, but
the people there are really friendly all the time. The food is
what it is. But I've never had an unexpected bad time or
surprise in my bag of food.

Didja hear? McDelta is all organic now. Really! No kidding.

I didn't realize it was the Huff Post. But usually they've got some good stuff on there.

I was pretty much cheering during the first one. I really dislike Edison, simply because he took the credit for stuff everyone else did, including one of my personal favorites, Tesla. Also on the list could be Einstein. Brilliant, yes; but Heisenberg was a good bit smarter, IMHO.
