Photoshop- which to choose?

I recently met up with an old high school friend who I now find is an excelled graphic designer (not yet employed but fully skilled). I told him I really want to learn photoshop and he offered to give me a copy of photoshop 7, cs, cs2 or cs3. I really have no idea which would be better but assume that the earlier ones are simpler and easier to use. Ive decided that whichever he gives me Ill employ his help and get a nice video guide to help me as well. Really it comes down to which to choose. I dont really know which is better but I sort of want to jump into the cs's just because they are newer and seem to offer a bit more. I just want to learn to eventually put on some neat graphic's (just pretty pictures that are unique to me) on my sites. Any suggestions?

I have paid copies of CS and CS4. CS4 does have a lot more features, but CS is perfectly fine. CS will run on slower machines.

Personally, I'd go and buy a copy of CS. You can pick it up pretty cheap. I always find if I pay for a product, I use it to it's full advantage. I could have got plenty of WSO's, software and courses on torrent, but I opted to pay for them. If you really want something that bad, paying for it is the better option.

I will most likely buy it if I find I like it, similar to a few programs I have on my current setup that I use religiously. I only have programs that I truly use often on my computer, so I wanted one quality photo program that I can count on for a while. I cant afford much right now, but I always respect companies of quality products by purchasing them if I know they are of reputed value. I meet my friend in two days. You recommend cs then?

From my limited experience with Photoshop I don't think earllier means easier.
Less features maybe, but not easier.

Hm, so I should just go for cs3 then? Im willing to learn, no matter how long it takes. I just want the skills to eventually do all the editing on my own rather than being limited by the program or lack of my own skills =)

As I said, I use both, and I've never been limited by using CS. As someone said, older does not mean easier. For a beginner it does not matter what version you use (heck, you could even use gimp). The learning curve will remain the same.

Looking at pricing now I think cs would be best. If I really like it, it is cheaper than most I can find. For those with experience, do you think the newer features available when you upgrade at all difficult to get used to or does it pretty much feel the same?
