Grrrrrrr - Bait and Switch 3x in one day?

I am so irritated.

I am trying to update my drivers and even going to the manufacturer directly (Dell, Intel, etc) they downloaded a tool to check for out of date drivers.

Then after the scan you need to 'register' to get the drivers installed. Registered is apparently double-speak for 'Purchase'.

That's ok so far though. All 3 products said $29.95 - for 3 years @ $9.95 per year.

One had a coupon and the others had those creative little crossed out 'regular price' signs to show what a big savings it is.

But all 3 times when I went to Paypal to pay the price was $39.95 so I backed out all 3 times.

Sitting here with all my old drivers and wondering how (edit) these completely bogus 3rd parties who blatantly advertise one price and charge another get away with it).

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

    Patrician,

Are you SURE you went to the manufacturer? There are a LOT of scam artists that aare now monetizing EVERYTHING. AND, check the paypal address. They may all be the SAME. The manufacturers should give you the driver you want FOR FREE!!!!!!

I have a related gripe, but my time is short and it warrants a new thread. http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...zlvqmDTwvaiI9Q MAYBE you have a virus or trojan!

Steve is right Patrician, most of the time updated drivers are free from the manufacturer.
But there are sites and programs that say they will scan your pc for updated drivers then try to sell you something.I suggest staying away from those sites.

Yeah, I should have said, though my thread implies it, but STAY AWAY from such things! A driver search IS a nice idea. Properly done, it warrants a fee. Unfortunately, many want to cause trouble and/or extort money, so try to STAY AWAY! BTW, IMPROPERLY done can be a BAD idea! I STILL remember about M/S VB4 constantly trying to "upgrade" crystal reports 5.0 to cyrystal reports 4.5. It is a good thing it ASKED!

Yes, think you are right - even though they each boasted 'Official Microsoft' etc graphics, and again had the manufacturers names in the URL - I think I was hijacked FROM the manufacturer's home pages. (edit no longer think this - was sent directly to the sites from Google searches - 8/31/10)

.... yeh but 3 times I must be brain dead because I usually watch for stuff like redirects and have lots of security that nags about downloads.

I always remember in the past free updates from manufacturers but you know times are hard for everyone and I was thinking, he they are all monetizing their sites (LOL) (like for % from the 3rd party vendors).

Oh well - I appreciate your affirmations and my quest goes on - with much more caution...

Why not post the hardware you need drivers for here? There are a lot of good experts in here that have probably worked on your exact same hardware.

Gary - the issue is how to get the downloads installed. I have identified the drivers I need. Prior to getting hijacked and redirected to 3rd parties, I have had no luck downloading from manufacturers including Microsoft - always some error message.

    Intel - 82801 GBE/GR/GH ICH7 storage, ultra storage (2)
    Intel - Network Adapter
    Intel - 945G I/O controller
    " " Root Port 2771
" " LPC Int FC controller
    " " Exp root port
    " " SM Bus controller
" " Universal Serial Bus Controller USB Host Controller
    " " INtel 82562 net controller OEM*

(FOR OEM = Intel says 'we have generic drivers - refer to your hardware manufacturer as they may have customized stuff' (whhhaaa?)

ATI Radeon X300 SE128MB (display) (DT monitor is 1920x1979)

    SigmaTel (audio) Codec

    HP Office Jet

There are more but these are the ones I wrote down from the bogus scans so who knows....

Note: everything in my systems are working although my laptop has some irritating error messages which are inconsequential but none the less bothersome (after a Windows update).

    I have 2 Pentium D's - Dell Inspirion E1505 (LT) and Dimension 5150 (DT)
wireless and cable wired (both PCs) Belkin router

Dell is no help at all because my hardware and software warranties have expired. Go figure. I know everything is outdated and low budget to begin with but it works fine for what I need - so please nobody say i might as well get rid of it.

    Thank you.

    Patrician,

Oddly, you described a problem similar to one I ran into last sunday. Sadly, I haven't been able to really research it. Apparently antivirus companies are having trouble DETECTING it, let alone fixing it. But it SEEMS to be set to trigger a reinfection after going to microsoft update. A CLOSE examination(click the page and right click/properties) reveals that the update site is NOT microsofts! the URL changes from like update.microsoft.com to updatemicrosoft.x????.com I forget what the x???? is.

    Steve,

I didn't go to Microsoft - I have 'automatic updates'.

I just went to Dell and Intel*, got 2 - 3rd parties from them on Desktop and then on my Laptop I got a different one. for 3 total.

After I hit register I went to choose payment screen (Paypal) and then a ClickBank page came up with the higher price so I backed out.

eeeee - stupid me I need to go and change my Paypal password quick.

    byeeeeee

    edit: *

You know what I think I didn't pay attention and was at a URL that just had those company names in their URL - in other words they were not Intel or Dell to begin with so I wasn't hijacked or redirected. I was just not at the actual Intel even though it had the logos, etc.

(when I referred to 'official Microsoft' - it was on the cover graphic for the driver download tools that they said it was official.)

In both these scenarios I would think the actual Manufacturers would have an issue with them using their name in the URL and their graphics to say the stuff is actually for Microsoft etc.

I know a guy who got sued for using AOL in his domain name - and it stood for something else.

You say you have Dell systems
'Dell Inspirion E1505 (LT) and Dimension 5150 (DT)'

On the Dell websites you can find support areas that will allow you to download drivers for your systems.

Here is a url for support from Dell
This is for small business support you may need to choose home support.

      support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=biz&catid=&impi d=&os=WW1&osl=en&ServiceTag=38NT741&SystemID=WRK_P NT_P4_360
This is for small business support you may need to choose home support.

On the body of your systems (or base of laptops maybe) you should find a Dell SERVICE TAG. If you input this in the right place in the support areas then Dell will know just what your system configuration was when it was manufactured and will list the right drivers for the various operating systems.

There is also a Dell app on support site that will ferret out your SERVICE TAG if you cannot find it or it has been removed.

I always download my drivers from Dell site for Dell systems.

Just for your reference when I have needed drivers for non brand systems I have used DriverGuide.com

Not saying it is best or anything -- just that I have downloaded a couple of hard to find otherwise drivers from there. A while back they started needing registration. And there may be a for fee option to buy things BUT I always used the free option to download drivers others have uploaded.

      Hope this helpful

OK. Thank you. I will go back to Dell. The last few times I was just run around in circles there and could never get anywhere.

Even with all the widgets for Dell Support on my systems I always end up after a very long loop with 'your warranties are expired'...

I will try again with these new instructions (I have both service tags but never saw anywhere to put them). (and always a mess that one is business and the other home for some odd reason that only they comprehend).

    Thanks again for your support.
