I prefer reading novels and short stories over watching movies. How about you?
  • Profile picture of the author Gary Pettit
I definitely prefer novels to movies. However, I can't stop watching movies, either.
And I'm one of those who is happy to see a movie first--even at the risk of having the ending spoiled--and then go back and read the novel. If I liked the movie, I may really like the author's other books or stories. And as John Grisham has demonstrated repeatedly, some movies have much better endings than their books!

I watch movies too. They're just a different beast from novels. Novels can take you places film adaptations can't (and most film adaptations brutally mangle and disfigure the original story). Some novels such as "The Catcher in the Rye" should never be made into a film.

Why not? I don't always have a lot of faith in the film industry, but Hollywood can't possibly make "The Catcher in the Rye" any worse.

I had to read it in high school and I hated it.

Tried again a years later to see if my perspective had changed and it hadn't.

The thing about "The Catcher in the Rye" is that is that it may be more what the reader imagines it to be more than anything else, so that would be hard to translate to film. Perhaps its readers tend to be in their teens and the associated sensibilities that accompany teen years. Like it or hate it, that novel has got iconic status for whatever reason.

Just curious, did you like, hate, or have indifferent reaction to the movie, "Taxi Driver" (if you saw it)?

I agree with your assessment of Catcher. It's definitely a classic and objectively, I understand why, but just hate Holden Caulfield.

Taxi Driver is disturbing but I like it.

Maybe I'm weird (ok, I am weird) but I see similarities between Travis Bickle and Holden Caulfield.

Interestingly, here is a line from a Wikipedia article:
              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultura...her_in_the_Rye
"The film Taxi Driver (1976) follows Travis Bickle, who seems to be a representation of Holden Caulfield, only older and more confrontational. The list of similarities is long, from analyzing the fact that both of them obsess over women and try to protect the innocence of children, to the fact that both of them purchase a prostitute without actually having sex with her. They both live in New York City, and though they only see all of the filth in the city (as they are incredibly pessimistic), and vow to leave, neither of them actually departs."

I have to thank you Thunderbird. Due to our discussion, I picked up a copy of The Catcher In The Rye to revisit it.

I just finished it and my perspective totally changed. I found it disturbing but poignant. Whereas, I really disliked Holden back when I was in high school, I found an understanding for him.

My son is reading it now and I'll be interested in his perspective.

I'm going to rent Taxi Driver and see if I can find the similarities between
                Travis and Holden.

                Thank you!

It depends on the book but I read about a book a day if it's interesting. In fact, just last night I read a book in about 4 hours of about 400 pages in between getting my kids off to bed & other nightly routines.

I LOVE to read but I also enjoy a good movie now and then too. I also like to read a book & then watch the movie to see just how different/similar they are to each other.

I routinely can read a 4-500 page novel in an evening like Teresa. Technical books take a bit more, especially if I'm trying to learn something and not just a feel for the topic. Business books are either a quick read or take longer as well.

As to the original post, here we are again with an either/or response requested for genres which are basically different mediums. You can tell a story orally, or you can sign it, recite it, write it, act it out with puppets, create a music video or it, a power point presentation or a movie. Each medium can highlight different aspects of a movie. I'm a big fan of most of Herbert's Dune series. The original novel is very introspective and can wonder off in planetary ecologies - but is a very entertaining and engrossing book to me. The original movie tried to follow this introspection and that's just not something movies are very good at in general. However, the SciFi remake played to the mediums strengths and was a much better movie to me - but was by necessity different than the novel.

I guess what I'm trying to say is comparing books to movies might not be the best comparison to make.

to make a short story long - I like both mediums. Sometimes different is good.

      peace,
      --Jack

I love to read books! It's always been fun to learn a lot of new thing just by reading. And it's really different when you absorb something by reading.
But, watching movies is just as fun! You can learn a lot of things too, but of course, it depends on the movie you're watching.

I prefer to watch movies perhaps because I'm a very visual person...

On the other hand, I prefer to read the novels that are made into movies than the movies themselves because I find my imagination is more vivid and exciting and I tend to get disappointed with the movie result.

Hmm thinking about it now, maybe I should direct the movies myself then aye...

    Ahh well I guess I enjoy both. It's a 50-50.

I would imagine that people who really enjoy novels would be quite visual since the reader needs to visualize the story from the descriptions. In movies, the visuals are all ready-made.

Movies are a collaborative medium, usually based on a misinterpretation of what the screenwriter intended. Novels are usually a one-person show, presented as the writer intended (rather than the limited by the constraints of making a movie), then misinterpreted by the reader.

I love a good book or three.
I don't think I will ever tire of reading Tolkien.
And the movies BASED on the books were ok, but they do not tell the same story that the books do,so if you have "seen" LOTR you still have not experienced it properly.

I thought the movies where good, but you're right they didn't really tell the story. What I liked about the movies was the scenery and many of the characters looked like I had imaged when I read the books.
Sadly the only Tolkien book I have now is Farmer Giles of Ham

I totally love novels! I love movies! The thing I hate is watching movies based on novels. Especially if I have read the novel prior to the release of the movie. Such movies are usually boring and do not tell the story as it is. This is with a few exceptions like Lord of the Rings.

There are actually significant copyright advantages in doing so and getting published, over getting a screenplay alone produced. Ideally, write and publish the novel or short story before the screenplay (whoever ultimately writes the script).

I don't understand people not having time to read novels. As I understand it, you don't have to read the whole novel at one sitting. You can read for a while, put the book down, and come back later. I think that's how it works.

Movies, on the other hand, require about 5 hours, including travelling time, to see what, in my experience, usually turns out to be garbage. Avatar, for instance. I did not sit right through to the end because it was so boring, am I alone in that?

I think it depends on how creative you are and whether you were encouraged to read books at home when you were young.

Most kids nowadays, I suspect, would favour movies and share the directors perspective. But that's only because most haven't had the experience of creating a living breathing world in their own mind.

Personally, I probably watched more movies when I was younger because of my family.

Even though I only rarely watch a movie, I can disagree with you completely. Movies leave out a lot of the texture, hell, they leave out a lot of the story.

Beyond that though, and far more important, reading is active, watching is passive. Reading exercises the brain far better than watching movies do.

Besides, not everyone wants to "get to the end of the story" as fast as they can. If speed is the goal, skipping the movie entirely will save the 2 hours.

They are two different beasts, to be handled differently. But if I was forced to compare the two I would say novels, because they offer insights into characters, nuances of plot and dialogue that you don't usually get when dealing with the condensed, two hour version of something.

Sometimes, some times they will take a short story, or for that matter a full story (even rarer) and make a good movie out of it.

I read Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption when it was a short story in Skeleton Key? (I believe) and they made a pretty good movie out of it.

And I don't think there is one author, they haven't screwed up more novel to movies than Steven King.

There is an exception to every rule. So to speak.

i read at least 3 books per month, there is always a book in my handbag that i always carry and when i log out out of here im too tired to watch a movie so a good book is a really nice way to unwind.A book has a way of bringing characters in a way u cant believe.

Well it depends. Novels have lots of details and let you imagine how everything looks. Most movies don't have all of the details...but even though, I prefer them.

I like both, but I guess I prefer novels in general. They just tell a story so much better than a movie ever could. There just isn't enough time in a movie to explain everything in a story, so it always feels like they leave too many things out (I'm talking mainly about movies based on novels).

They both have their ups & downs :] movies have visuals & books give description. But when they turn a book into a movie...with the exception of a few not many turn out great...T-T

I love to read, but only certain genres and not just any book within that genre. Therefore, I tend to watch more movies than I read because I can watch a wider variety. However, if there is a book and movie of the same story, I prefer to read first, then see the movie vs. the other way around. Some people like my sister would rather see the show or movie first because reading takes away from the surprises and you get to see the visuals first hand without having experienced them and she says you're always looking for things they didn't include in the movie/show. I on the other hand like the surprises in reading because they are in your imagination and could go many different ways in perception. Then I see how well they adapted to the screen.

However, if there is a movie I want to see vs. a book that I really want to read, I choose the book first. But hey, I can see the movie while reading the book. Now that efficiency.

I prefer to read the novels because it gives the different types of life's experience knowledge.I watch the movie for only time pass.Novels gives us the knowledge & gives us to make ur mind in deep thinking. You can build your thinking skill and become smarter with the knowledge of the historical eras, in which the novels are based in.

Is this one of those towns in Wales with the long names?

Sometimes some books don't translate or aren't translated well into movies.

Some movies are not like the book at all - like all they borrowed was the name, and added Alan Smithee to it.
